OBJECTIVE: Studies on maladaptive daydreaming have shown that it has a number of comorbidities including dissociative disorders, yet no studies have examined the reciprocal relationship. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of maladaptive daydreaming in a sample of psychiatric inpatients with high levels of dissociation.
METHODS: The Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), Self-Report Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule, Maladaptive Daydreaming Scale-16 (MDS-16), Structured Clinical Interview for Maladaptive Daydreaming, and the Obsessive Compulsive Inventory were administ

BACKGROUND: Dissociative symptoms are commonly observed in a substantial minority of patients with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and during the first administration of esketamine for the treatment of Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD). We examine differences in the number and pattern of dissociative symptoms (depersonalization, derealization, dissociative amnesia, identity fragmentation) reported by these two groups.
METHODS: Data for patients diagnosed with PTSD (N = 134) were drawn from studies of individuals with exposure to civilian traumas, childhood abuse or combat trauma. Dat

There are many controversies regarding the prevalence, causation, possible iatrogenicity, and treatment of multiple personality disorder. Those who view the disorder as much more prevalent than has previously been suspected believe it is caused by experiences of severe child abuse and have used rather unorthodox techniques to help the patient relate the experience of abuse to current problems of dissociation. Other clinicians believe the disorder is overdiagnosed and that it may be created or made worse by therapists who unwittingly reinforce symptoms of dissociation. Many of the controversies

There is little occupational therapy literature that addresses the profession's efficacy in the treatment of persons with multiple personality disorder, yet the characteristics and complexity of this disorder render it one that can gain much from occupational therapy intervention. This paper examines the ways in which the occupational therapist can help in the treatment of patients with multiple personality disorder by introducing the alter personalities to each other, encouraging rapport among the personalities, and providing tasks that allow the alter personalities and the host to work toget

Present neuroimaging findings suggest two subtypes of trauma response, one characterized predominantly by hyperarousal and intrusions, and the other primarily by dissociative symptoms. The neural underpinnings of these two subtypes need to be better defined. Fourteen women with childhood abuse and the current diagnosis of dissociative amnesia or dissociative identity disorder but without posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and 14 matched healthy comparison subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while finding their way in a virtual maze. The virtual maze presented a fi

Dissociative amnesia that encompasses one's entire life and identity is a rare disorder, as is dissociative fugue. In evaluating such cases, a dichotomy is often invoked between functional and organic etiologies. However, this dichotomy suffers from both conceptual and ethical flaws. Conceptually, putative brain-based, organic etiologies for many dissociative disorders-including dissociative amnesia-exist. Ethically, such dichotomies may result in dismissive care for patients with distress-based disorders like dissociative amnesia. In support of humane, neurobiologically informed treatment of

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that somatoform dissociation would differentiate among specific diagnostic categories after controlling for general psychopathology.
METHOD: The Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire (SDQ-20), the Dissociative Experiences Scale, and the Symptom Checklist-90-R were completed by patients with DSM-IV diagnoses of dissociative disorders (n = 44), somatoform disorders (n = 47), eating disorders (n = 50), bipolar mood disorder (n = 23), and a group of consecutive psychiatric outpatients with other psychiatric disorders (n =

Dissociative disorders have a lifetime prevalence of about 10%. Dissociative symptoms may occur in acute stress disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, somatization disorder, substance abuse, trance and possession trance, Ganser's syndrome, and dissociative identity disorder, as well as in mood disorders, psychoses, and personality disorders. Dissociative symptoms and disorders are observed frequently among patients attending our rural South Carolina community mental health center. Given the prevalence of mental illness in primary care settings and the diagnostic difficulties encountered with

Background: The overlapping symptoms of schizophrenia and dissociation have been increasingly recognized. This paper explains why it is reasonable to expect that there would be a substantial subgroup of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) who suffer from pathological dissociation. Objective: As little is known about the prevalence of dissociative disorders and symptoms among patients with SSDs, we investigated the prevalence of dissociative disorders and symptoms among patients with SSDs. Method: We used both self-report measures and structured interviews to examine

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to replicate the results of previous studies concerning the development of two versions of the Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire. The SDQ-20 evaluates the severity of somatoform dissociative phenomena, and the SDQ-5 is a dissociative disorders screening instrument.
METHODS: Thirty-one patients with dissociative disorders and 45 consecutive psychiatric outpatients with other DSM-IV diagnoses completed the SDQ-20 and SDQ-5 as well as the Dissociation Questionnaire which measures psychological dissociation.
RESULTS: Mokken scale analysis showed that the i

BACKGROUND: Dissociative disorders involve disruptions in memory, identity, sensory awareness, and motor control, often triggered by psychological distress. Dissociative amnesia may appear as either retrograde or anterograde memory loss, and dissociative stupor as well as conversion disorder are also considered part of the dissociative disorders spectrum. Cases presenting with generalized amnesia (both retrograde and anterograde), dissociative stupor, and conversion disorder are rare. Here, I report a unique case of a 17-year-old female exhibiting this combination of symptoms following her mot

BACKGROUND: Dissociation, including depersonalization, derealization, dissociative identity disorder or dissociation in the context of functional neurological disorder, is classically associated with trauma-related disorders but is increasingly reported in anxiety and depressive disorders. Despite growing evidence linking dissociation to affective symptom severity, functional impairment, and treatment outcomes, its role in anxiety and depression remains insufficiently synthesized.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to map the extent, nature, and characteristics of dissociation in adults wit

Twelve patients with clinical and EEG manifestations reminiscent of temporal lobe epilepsy reported symptoms of dissociative states. In seven of these patients, the clinical picture was consistent with multiple personality, whereas the other five had the illusion of supernatural possession. These cases suggest that in selected instances dissociative states may constitute complex behavioral manifestations of chronic limbic epilepsy.

Various authors have argued that dissociative amnesia is a synonym for repressed memories, recovered memories are almost always false memories, and dissociative amnesia and dissociative identity disorder are not valid disorders. These authors commit numerous errors of logic and scholarship; they misunderstand Freud's thinking about childhood sexual abuse, dissociation and repression and blame both Freudian repression theory and Freudian therapists for an epidemic of false memories. In fact, however, Freudian repression theory is based on the assumption that the childhood sexual abuse never hap

This article reports probably the first case of multiple personality from India and compares and contrasts it with the hysterical possession syndrome. Attention is drawn to the apparent rarity of multiple personality in contrast to the great prevalence of the possession syndrome in India (and other underdeveloped societies), while the reverse applies to Western Europe and North America. It is postulated that the disparity of frequency between the two manifestations of personal-identity disturbance derives from certain basic cultural differences. It is argued that polytheism and belief in reinc

Pathological dissociation is relatively common in the United States and may be associated with violent or criminal behavior. Dissociative Disorders, especially Dissociative Identity Disorder, are considered controversial diagnoses by some in the psychiatric and legal professions. Individuals who offend during dissociative states may not be criminally responsible if they meet the legal standard for insanity, however, insanity pleas based on dissociative symptoms are rare. This review examined Federal appellate case law for potential legal barriers to the insanity defense for dissociative condit

Dissociative neurological symptom disorder, also called functional neurological symptom disorder or conversion disorder, presents characteristics that are incongruent with medical or neurological conditions. This study investigates whether sensory exposure to red light and white noise can trigger dissociative and conversion symptoms. Consequently, the reported somatosensory alterations significantly challenge current diagnostic protocols. In this study, we record inceptive evidence of conversion symptoms from a sample of 61 healthy university students who reported dissociative states after the

There is little systematic research on the cross-cultural validity of the dissociative disorders, especially in non-western countries. This study evaluates the fit of the DSM-IV classification and concepts of these disorders with local concepts, experiences and local presentations in south-west Uganda. We conducted focus group discussions with medical students, traditional healers, religious leaders, counselors, community members and other health workers (n=48). They were supplemented by key informant interviews with religious people, traditional healers and leaders (n=11). The responses were

Two individuals with well-defined seizure problems developed dual personalities. One personality was irritable and hostile, the other placid; in each case, a major seizure preceded the shift from the former to the latter. Each personality was amnesic for the other. The incidence of seizures in patients with multiple personality disorder is higher than expected, and these cases demonstrate a direct relationship.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of dissociative disorder (DD) with impaired functioning and co-occurring Axis I and personality disorders among adults in the community.
METHOD: Psychiatric interviews were administered to a sample of 658 adult participants in the Children in the Community Study, a community-based longitudinal study.
RESULTS: Depersonalization disorder (prevalence: 0.8%), dissociative amnesia (prevalence: 1.8%), dissociative identity disorder (prevalence: 1.5%), and dissociative disorder not otherwise specified (prevalence: 4.4%), evident within the past year, were e
