Colon and rectal surgeons treat a unique patient population, many of whom identify as racial, ethnic, or sexual minorities. Multiple studies have shown having diverse representation improves not only patient outcomes but also the training and work environment. Surgery and surgical subspecialties have historically not achieved demographic parity due to a multitude of reasons. Current strategies to improve demographic parity include pipeline programs to attract more diverse applicants to residencies and mentorship programs to help early and mid-career surgeons. Improving diversity, equity, and i

Despite institutional efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, medical education continues to marginalize students with disabilities through persistent structural, cultural, and procedural barriers. Inaccessible learning environments, inadequate accommodations, and entrenched ableist attitudes contribute to inequitable educational experiences and outcomes for disabled students. These barriers are further compounded for individuals who hold intersecting marginalized identities, particularly those who are racially and ethnically underrepresented in medicine. This commentary applies the disabi

Despite significant improvements in pediatric cancer survival outcomes, there remain glaring disparities in under-represented racial and ethnic groups that warrant mitigation by the scientific and clinical community. To address and work towards eliminating such disparities, the Pacific Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium (PNOC) and Children's Brain Tumor Network (CBTN) established a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) working group in 2020. The DEI working group is dedicated to improving access to care for all pediatric patients with central nervous system (CNS) tumors, broadening diversity

This study examines how gay-Mizrahi men in Israel navigate the communicative processes through which workplace subjectivities are constructed, negotiated, and legitimized. Mizrahiness refers to a Jewish ethno-cultural position associated with Middle Eastern and North African ancestry, historically shaped by unequal relations with Ashkenazi hegemony and intersecting class, geographic, cultural, and gendered hierarchies. Based on semi-structured interviews with self-identified gay-Mizrahi men across diverse occupational sectors, this study examines how sexuality, ethnicity and professionalism ar

Physical literacy, originally developed within physical education settings to foster lasting engagement in physical activity, is increasingly recognized in Canada as a multidimensional framework encompassing physical, cognitive, and affective dimensions that support health and participation. Despite its inclusive intent, its implementation continues to face challenges related to equity, diversity, and social justice. This paper offers a concise synthesis of the existing literature and summarizes key insights from a brainstorming activity, grounded in values of inclusion. It highlights four maj

OBJECTIVES: Effective multidirectional and longitudinal communication is essential to patient- and family-centered care (PFCC) in the ICU. While communication technologies have the potential to facilitate effective communication, their utilization, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been variable. This scoping review answers the following research questions: What communication tools, strategies, and programs have been used in ICUs? What are their reported effects on PFCC and multidirectional communication? To what extent do these studies consider equity, diversity, and inclusion prin

OBJECTIVE: Inclusion of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in eating disorder (ED) research is a critical unmet need, but evidence-based recruitment strategies are lacking. We sought to determine whether methods we had implemented to increase recruitment of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups were successful in improving racial and ethnic diversity in a clinical trial in women with anorexia nervosa.
METHOD: We implemented new strategies for recruitment of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in a clinical trial on bone health in women with anorexia nervosa, including leverag

Despite the social and regulatory expectation that contemporary clinical trials for new pharmaceutical drugs will include a diverse set of research participants, achieving appropriate representation in clinical research remains tenuous. Of ongoing concern is how experts and regulators navigate decisions about drug approvals when presented with clinical studies that have limited demographic data. Drawing on regulatory discussions about Descovy, an HIV-prevention drug that was studied only in cisgender men and transgender women who have sex with men, we analyze a contentious debate over the mean

BACKGROUND: Telemedicine expanded rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic, but its role in early-phase oncology trials remains uncertain. We evaluated its impact on recruitment, enrollment, equity, and access in a large phase I program.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients seen for first consultation in the MD Anderson Phase I Program (2016-2023). Recruitment (consent) and enrollment (treatment initiation) were compared by visit type, race/ethnicity, and geography across pre-pandemic (2016-2019), pandemic (2020-March 11, 2023), and post-public health emergency (PHE; March-D

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted significant failures in United States public health communications, which were often perceived as unclear and biased, particularly among racialized and marginalized groups. As generative artificial intelligence (genAI) becomes integrated into public health practice, there is an urgent need to train the workforce to recognize and mitigate the societal biases these tools can reproduce. This study describes the development and classroom testing of a tool designed to teach these critical evaluation skills.
METHODS: We developed the "Health Communica

BACKGROUND: Prior research indicates that enrolling underrepresented populations in clinical research is challenging. Although research has identified some barriers to participation and strategies to overcome them, studies have made little progress in being inclusive and representative. There remains a great need for including racial/ethnic minorities, low-income families, and pregnant women in research. The purpose of this article is to describe the implementation of enrollment strategies used in our study to understand the feasibility of building a maternal cohort and better understand the r

BACKGROUND: Medical schools worldwide are integrating social accountability into admissions to address health inequities, improve workforce distribution and enhance population health outcomes. While foundational frameworks exist, implementation outcomes of specific admissions policies remain underexplored. This scoping review maps how social mission mandates are operationalized within medical school admissions and examines reported impacts on applicant diversity, geographic representation and workforce alignment.

A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in medical education requires addressing both explicit and implicit biases based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics and the intersectionality with other identities. Heterosexism and heteronormative attitudes contribute to health and healthcare disparities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning, intersex, asexual individuals. Student, trainee, and faculty competencies in medical education curricula regarding the care of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer o

BACKGROUND: Common Data Models (CDMs) standardize health data from disparate observational sources, enabling the use of real-world data in more efficient, collaborative observational research studies. Until recently, the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model (OMOP CDM) had limited infrastructure and ontology options to store a person's race and ethnicity data. This made using these data challenging for patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) and health equity studies.
OBJECTIVE: The primary goals are to outline the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (O

Conducting research with Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) individuals presents distinctive methodological and ethical challenges. This methodological reflection describes our team's experience in designing and implementing an accessible mixed-methods study that intentionally promoted Deaf and hard-of-hearing inclusion. We outline strategies to address challenges such as linguistic diversity, cultural norms, and technological accessibility across all research phases, from recruitment to dissemination. Knowing sign language facilitated direct communication and trust-building, yet additional adapta
