Meckel's diverticulum represents a remnant of the proximal end of the omphalomesenteric duct, which constitutes a connection between the middle intestine and the vitelline vesicle. It is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract and is found in approximately 0.3-2% of the general population. Complications such as hemorrhage, bowel obstruction, inflammation, perforation, intussusception, volvulus and malignant transformation develop in only 4-4.8% of all patients, with most cases presenting in childhood, while relative risk decreases during life. A 66-year-old man was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with mediastinal emphysema after an abnormal chest X-ray during physical examination. During hospitalization, an intestinal obstruction was observed to be caused by barium used during gastric cancer screening. Colonoscopy demonstrated stenosis and perforation due to sigmoid colon diverticulitis. Hartmann surgery was performed, and the patient was discharged on the 58th day. Therefore, colon perforation should be considered as a cause of mediastinal emphysema, and organic stenosis may occur with intestinal obstruction caused by barium

The authors write about the inversion, a rare complication of the diverticulum of the sigmoid colon. The colour, surface of the diverticulum, 15 and 8 mm in diameters, were the same as the colon mucosa, it was soft and mobile by tacting. Biopsy was performed which caused a serious complication, a perforation to the free abdominal space, requiring a surgical operation. The inverted diverticulum can be distinguished from a polyp not by endoscopy, but by double contrast barium enema. Detecting a long, soft, mobile mass in the colon, must be thought about an inverted diverticulum and the biopsy mu

The case of a giant diverticulum of the sigmoid colon in a 74 year-old woman is reported. The diverticulum had perforated into the urinary bladder and required a 3-phase operation with resection of the sigmoid colon and urinary bladder. Giant diverticulum is considered a rare complication of diverticulosis. Generally, it is a pseudo-diverticulum that grows due to a valve mechanism working in the neck of the diverticulum. The differential diagnosis lies mainly between intestinal duplication and pneumatosis cystoides. Surgical therapy yields favorable results.

INTRODUCTION: Low-grade mucinous neoplasia is an uncommon benign tumor that develops in the appendix. The development of mucocele disease has never been reported in a colonic diverticulum. We present a case developing low-grade mucinous neoplasia in a cecal diverticulum.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A tumor in the ileocecal region was found during a medical examination of a 66-year-old woman. Three months later, the tumor was still present and the patient developed abdominal pain. Laparoscopic ileocecal resection with D2 lymph node dissection was performed. Histopathological examination revealed a l

Gastrointestinal tract duplication is an uncommon congenital anomaly that rarely involves the colon. We report an unusual case of multiple short-segment duplications of the colon not previously reported in the literature. The patient had a large diverticulum-type duplication of the descending and sigmoid colon and two other tubular duplications of the transverse and ascending colon, the latter two communicating with the colon at both ends of the duplications. The symptomatic diverticulum-type of duplication was surgically treated.

Two patients with giant colonic diverticula were operated upon within one week. Uncommon features of this rare condition were observed in both patients: 1) the diverticulum was located outside the sigmoid colon, 2) smooth-muscle fibers and ganglion cells were present in the wall of the diverticulum, and 3) free perforation into the peritoneal cavity was the presenting symptom. Barium enema in one patient showed no communication between the diverticulum and the colonic lumen, despite evidence of such communication on histologic examination. Both patients were successfully treated by simple exci

RATIONALE: Gastric cancer associated with prepyloric diverticulum is the most uncommon form of gastric cancer. It may be very challenging to diagnose as the lesion located among gastric antrum, pancreas, and transverse colon. We here reported a rare case of gastric cancer associated with gastric diverticulum involved part of transverse colon and head of pancreas.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Abdominal pain and vomiting for 5 days.
DIAGNOSES: First diagnosis: colon cancer. Final diagnosis: gastric cancer from gastric diverticulum.
INTERVENTIONS: Three cycles of chemotherapy and operation.

INTRODUCTION: Incarcerated inguinal hernia is one of the most common emergencies in surgery. The diagnosis is usually made by physical examination, but the contents of the hernia sac may vary.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of inflamed diverticulum of the sigmoid colon found within an incarcerated right inguinal hernia sac in a 77-year-old man. The inflamed diverticulum was resected, and the hernia was repaired with synthetic mesh. No postoperative complication occurred. No previous study has reported a similar approach.
DISCUSSION: It is most unusual for an uncomplicated inflamed

Giant colonic diverticulum is an uncommon presentation of colonic diverticular disease. It is characterised by the presence of a diverticulum exceeding 4 cm in size, with approximately 90% of the cases involving the sigmoid colon. Typically, diagnosis relies on CT of the abdomen and pelvis (CTAP). The preferred treatment approach is sigmoid resection with a primary colonic anastomosis. However, in complicated or emergency cases, proctosigmoidectomy with end colostomy (Hartmann's procedure) is often considered the safest surgical option. We present an atypical case of a symptomatic patient with

The authors report a case of giant diverticulum of the sigmoid and review the approximately forty cases published in the literature. Clinical manifestations can be either an acute abdominal syndrome of symptoms of a chronic disease. Radiological appearances are usually characteristic: the giant diverticulum is located in the sigmoid, though in one case it arose from the transverse colon. An opaque image was noted in 15 of the patients following barium meal examination, and the lesion was associated with diverticulosis of the colon in every case. Apart from 4 cases, histological appearances wer

Giant diverticulum of the colon is a rare complication of the colonic diverticulosis. It generally involves the sigmoid colon. In the chronic form, without symptoms or with only a few non-specific symptoms, an abdominal mass is frequently palpable. A plain abdominal radiogram, showing a gas-filled cyst, can suggest the diagnosis. If needed, an abdominal CT scan is appropriate and seems to be more accurate than a barium enema. The treatment of choice is a segmental resection of the colon involving the giant diverticulum, followed by a direct anastomosis. Despite the old age of these patients, b

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) colonize only foveolar gastric-type mucosa and are associated with active chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer. The aim of this study was to investigate whether H. pylori can also be found in Meckel's diverticulum which contains heterotopic gastric mucosa.
METHODS: Biopsy specimens of Meckel's diverticulum resected in Queen Mary Hospital, University of Hong Kong, during the 10 year period 1986-1995 were retrieved and reviewed. Those containing gastric heterotopia were examined for the presence of H. pylori, using Warthin-Starry silver stain.
RESULTS:

This is a report of a patient with the CRST syndrome, a mild variant of scleroderma consisting of calcinosismraynaud's phenomenon, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia. Typical changes of scleroderma were present in the extremities, esophagus, duodenum and colon. In addition, there was a polypoid filling defect in a colonic diverticulum due to a fecalith. The radiologic appearance at first resembled a colonic neoplasm, although its location within a diverticulum and its speckled appearance suggested the possibility of a fecalith. This was confirmed at colonoscopy, which disclosed numerous wide-mo

Duodenocolic fistula (DCF) is a rare disorder defined by the presence of an internal fistula between the duodenum and colon. Colon cancer, Crohn's disease, diverticulum and duodenal ulcer are common causes of DCF, and vomiting and diarrhea are its main symptoms. We report a 14-year-old boy with DCF who had been treated for a functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID). The boy had often experienced episodes of vomiting and diarrhea since infancy, and had been diagnosed with FGID. He was referred to our hospital because of a 2-month exacerbation of persistent vomiting and diarrhea. Upper gastro

Sigmoid colon diverticulosis is commonly seen in both the surgical outpatient and emergency departments. Rarely, these sigmoid diverticulum, which usually range from 2-3mm to 2cm in size, can enlarge to more than 10 times. This is due to a ball-valve type mechanism that traps colonic gas inside the sigmoid diverticulum causing it to gradually enlarge. Patients with a giant sigmoid diverticulum (GSD) must be investigated thoroughly as two per cent of patients will present with a colonic carcinoma either within or distal to the GSD. Clinical symptoms of a GSD can range from chronic abdominal pai

The transverse colon is a particularly rare site for a diverticulum to develop, with only few reports of solitary diverticula described in the literature. Among the reported complications, colocutaneous fistulas appear relatively infrequently. We describe the case of an 80-year-old woman with a solitary diverticulum of the transverse colon presenting as acute diverticulitis with abscess formation in the epigastric region. A fistulous tract was found between the inflamed colon and the skin. A wedge resection of the inflamed colon together with the fistula and the solitary diverticulum was perfo

AIM: To determine the pattern and distribution of colonic diverticulosis in Thai adults.
METHODS: A review of the computerized radiology database for double contrast barium enema (DCBE) in Thai adults was performed at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand. Incomplete studies and DCBE examinations performed in non-Thai individuals were excluded. The pattern and distribution of colonic diverticulosis detected during DCBE studies from June 2009 to October 2011 were determined. The occurrence of solitary cecal diverticulum, rectal diverticulum and giant d

Giant colonic diverticulum is a rare complication of diverticulosis, which may present in the acute or chronic setting. Colonic resection and en bloc resection of the diverticulum are the favored management, however, conservative treatment remains an option that could be considered in asymptomatic patients with minimal symptoms.
