The spatial context of free-ranging Hawaiian spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) producing acoustic signals.

To improve our understanding of how dolphins use acoustic signals in the wild, a three-hydrophone towed array was used to investigate the spatial occurrence of Hawaiian spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) relative to each other as they produced whistles, burst pulses, and echolocation clicks. Groups of approximately 30 to 60 animals were recorded while they traveled and socialized in nearshore waters off Oahu, Hawaii. Signaling animals were localized using time of arrival difference cues on the three channels. Sequences of whistles occurred between dolphins separated by significantly grea

The terminal nerve of dolphins: gross structure, histology and luteinizing-hormone-releasing hormone immunocytochemistry.

The terminal nerve (TN) of several dolphins was examined using gross dissection aided by osmium staining, routine light and electron microscopy, and immunocytochemistry with antibodies to mammalian luteinizing-hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH). The TN consists of numerous pial strands which emanate from large paired ganglia located in the dura near the frontal lobe of the hemisphere. The strands are largely composed of myelinated axons which extend to basal forebrain areas including the anterior perforated substance. Peripheral branches of the ganglia run through foramina in the ethmoid bone in

First isolation of Prototheca bovis from a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

To our knowledge, this is the first report of Prototheca sp. isolated from the digestive tract of a dolphin. A captive-born female bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) weighing 165 kg that was housed at Enoshima Aquarium presented with a slightly elevated body temperature and candida-like yeasts in stomach fluid and feces. Gastroscopy revealed cobblestone-like thickening of the mucosa with a few ulcers in the forestomach. Prototheca bovis was isolated from the biopsy specimen of the lesion.

Helicobacter delphinicola infection and the risk of gastric disease in common bottlenose dolphin.

Gastritis and gastric ulcers are well-recognized conditions in cetaceans; bacteria of the genus Helicobacter are considered the primary cause of these diseases. Dolphins have been shown to be susceptible to infection by at least 2 gastric species of Helicobacter, H. cetorum and H. delphinicola, both of which are closely related to the human pathogen H. pylori. In the present study, we evaluated the carriage rate and relationship to gastric disease of H. cetorum and H. delphinicola, based on a study population of 82 dolphins maintained at 21 facilities in Japan. Of these 82 dolphins, 79 (96.3%)

First Report on the Finding of Listeria mnocytogenes ST121 Strain in a Dolphin Brain.

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is a ubiquitous bacterium that causes the foodborne illness, listeriosis. Clonal complexes (CC), such as CC121, are overrepresented in the food production industry, and are rarely reported in animals and the environment. Working within a European-wide project, we investigated the routes by which strains are transmitted from environments and animals to food and the food production environment (FPE). In this context, we report, for the first time, the occurrence of a ST121 (CC121) strain isolated from a dolphin brain. The genome was compared with the genomes of 376 CC

MELIOIDOSIS IN A BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN (TURSIOPS TRUNCATUS) AFTER A HURRICANE IN THE CARIBBEAN ISLANDS.

Melioidosis is an emerging infectious disease of humans and animals caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei and endemic in tropical regions, principally Southeast Asia and northern Australia. In September 2017, after Hurricane Maria impacted the Dolphin Discovery facility in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, a juvenile male bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) died within 96 hr of presenting with acute anorexia, lethargy, and respiratory distress. Histopathology demonstrated necrohemorrhagic bronchopneumonia, necrotizing hepatitis, splenitis, and lymphadenitis, with intralesi

Surgical Management of a Chronic Neck Abscess in a U.S. Navy Bottlenose Dolphin.

Surgical intervention on cetaceans is rarely performed due to challenges including general anesthesia and post-operative wound healing. This report describes the evaluation and treatment of an adult female bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) with the US Navy Marine Mammal Program, with a chronic ventral cervical abscess caused by Candida glabrata. Despite aspiration and lavage along with multiple antifungal drugs, the patient developed inspiratory stridor with decreased performance level and surgical treatment was pursued. Under general anesthesia with the dolphin in dorsal recumbency posi

Morbilliviral encephalitis in a striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba calf from Italy.

A free-living, striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba calf was stranded on the Latium coast of Italy in November 2009. Significant neuropathological findings included non-suppurative meningoencephalitis, microgliosis, neuronal degeneration, astrocytosis, and occasional multinucleate syncytia. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for Morbillivirus were positive exclusively from the brain, with morbilliviral antigen and nucleic acid being detected in neurons and, to a lesser extent, in astrocytes. A low neutralizing antibody titer (1:10) against

A comparison of pectoral fin contact behaviour for three distinct dolphin populations.

Tactile exchanges involving the pectoral fin have been documented in a variety of dolphin species. Several functions (e.g., social, hygienic) have been offered as possible explanations for when and why dolphins exchange pectoral fin contacts. In this study, we compared pectoral fin contact between dolphin dyads from three distinct dolphin populations: two groups of wild dolphins; Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) from The Bahamas and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) from around Mikura Island, Japan; and one group of captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatu

Multiple congenital cardiac abnormalities in an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Necropsy of an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) neonate that stranded dead on Folly Beach, Charleston County, South Carolina, USA, on 17 November 2007, revealed multiple congenital heart malformations. Cardiac anomalies included a hypertrophic right ventricle, ventricular septal defect (VSD), aortic dilation, atrial septal defect (ASD) between a functionally common atrium and a left atrial remnant, subvalvular pulmonic stenosis, and a hypoplastic pulmonary artery and mitral valve. Few incidences of abnormal cardiac development in cetaceans have been published. The case study se

Herpes simplex-like infection in a bottlenose dolphin stranded in the Canary Islands.

A bottlenose dolphin, stranded in the Canary Islands in 2001 exhibited non-suppurative encephalitis. No molecular detection of cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) was found, but a herpesviral-specific band of 250 bp was detected in the lung and brain. The sequenced herpesviral PCR product was compared with GenBank sequences, obtaining 98% homology (p-distance of 0.02) with Human herpesvirus 1 (herpes simplex virus 1 or HSV-1). This is the first report of a herpes simplex-like infection in a stranded dolphin.

Diving Into the Chemical World of Cetaceans: A Review on the Chemical Senses in Dolphins and Whales.

In evolutionary terms, chemical senses are the oldest sensory modality and play key roles in ecological functions such as orientation, foraging, and socio-sexual communication. Chemical perception encompasses olfaction, taste, and chemesthesis, and has been widely studied across vertebrates. However, these senses remain poorly documented in marine mammals, particularly cetaceans. The transition from land to water profoundly reshaped cetacean sensory systems, and for decades they were considered incapable of chemoreception, implying a complete regression. Recent studies challenge this view, sug

Genomic Characterization of Aeromonas dhakensis Isolated From a Fatal Dolphin Case.

Aeromonas dhakensis has emerged as a significant pathogen affecting both aquatic animals and humans; however, genomic data for isolates from marine mammals remain scarce. In this study, we characterised the genome of A. dhakensis strain KDL-001, isolated from a fatal dolphin case, using whole-genome sequencing and comparative genomics. Taxonomic analyses, including MLST and average nucleotide identity (ANI), confirmed the isolate as A. dhakensis. Core-genome phylogeny further revealed that KDL-001 is closely related to strains derived from fish and aquatic environments. Notably, in silico scre

Vascularization of the gastrointestinal tract of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus, Montagu 1821).

Odontocetes primarily rely on fish, cephalopods, and crustaceans as their main source of nutrition. In the digestive system, their polygastric complex exhibits similarities to that of their closest terrestrial relatives such as cows, sheep, and giraffes, while the entero-colic tract shares similarities with terrestrial carnivores. The morphology, caliber, and structure of the odontocete intestine are relatively constant, and, since there is no caecum, a distinction between the small and large intestine and their respective subdivisions is difficult. To address this issue, we used the intestina

Dolphin conditioned hearing attenuation in response to repetitive tones with increasing level.

All species of toothed whales studied to date can learn to reduce their hearing sensitivity when warned of an impending intense sound; however, the specific conditions under which animals will employ this technique are not well understood. The present study was focused on determining whether dolphins would reduce their hearing sensitivity in response to an intense tone presented at a fixed rate but increasing level, without an otherwise explicit warning. Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to intermittent, 57-kHz tone bursts were continuously measured in two bottlenose dolphins as they were ex

Performance Optimization for Bionic Robotic Dolphin with Active Variable Stiffness Control.

Aquatic animals such as fish and cetaceans can actively modulate their body stiffness with muscle to achieve excellent swimming performance under different situations. However, it is still challenging for a robotic swimmer with bionic propulsion mode to dynamically adjust its body stiffness to improve the swimming speed due to the difficulties in designing an effective stiffness adjustment structure. In this paper, based on the special torque mode of a motor, we propose an active variable stiffness control method for a robotic dolphin to pursue better swimming speed. Different from a variable

Chronic nonchylous lymphatic pleural effusion in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 19-year-old male bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) presented with inappetence and avoidant behavior. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Ultrasound revealed a large-volume left-sided pleural effusion, which was consistent with chronic nonchylous lymphatic effusion and mild chronic hemorrhage by cytology. Computed tomography identified ipsilateral rib fractures, atelectasis, nodular pleuritis, marginal lymph node enlargement, and suspected dilation of the thoracic duct and internal thoracic veins. Fifteen lipids were significantly higher in serum of the dolphin as compared with contro

How accurate is the soft tissue prediction of Dolphin Imaging for orthognathic surgery?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study is to evaluate the accuracy of soft tissue prediction models with Dolphin Imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preoperative and 1-year postoperative Lateral cephalograms (LCG) of patients undergoing Le Fort I, bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) or bimaxillary osteotomy (Bimax) between 2006 and 2009 were retrospectively collected. A hard tissue virtual surgery was performed on the preoperative LCG to match the hard tissue of the 1-year postoperative LCG. The soft tissue changes were then modelled by Dolphin Imaging (version 11.5b) and the diff
