Visual Cortical Plasticity: Molecular Mechanisms as Revealed by Induction Paradigms in Rodents.

Assessing the molecular mechanism of synaptic plasticity in the cortex is vital for identifying potential targets in conditions marked by defective plasticity. In plasticity research, the visual cortex represents a target model for intense investigation, partly due to the availability of different in vivo plasticity-induction protocols. Here, we review two major protocols: ocular-dominance (OD) and cross-modal (CM) plasticity in rodents, highlighting the molecular signaling pathways involved. Each plasticity paradigm has also revealed the contribution of different populations of inhibitory and

Lenticonus in Alport's syndrome. A family study.

A South Indian family with three well documented cases of Alport's syndrome with anterior lenticonus are reported. Clinical features of the syndrome including ocular and laboratory findings have been presented and discussed. Macular pigmentation, 5 cases, subcapsular opacity and nephrotic syndrome, one case each, observed in the present series are of great interest and are quite rare in patients with Alport's syndrome. Critical analysis of the family pedigree revealed autosomal dominance with incomplete penetrance as the possible mode of genetic transmission of the disease.

Eye Movements in Silent Visual Speech Track Unheard Acoustic Signals and Relate to Hearing Experience.

Behavioral and neuroscientific studies have shown that watching a speaker's lip movements aids speech comprehension. Intriguingly, even when videos of speakers are presented silently, various cortical regions track auditory features, such as the envelope. Recently, we demonstrated that eye movements track low-level acoustic information when attentively listening to speech. In this study, we investigated whether ocular speech tracking occurs during visual speech and how it influences cortical silent speech tracking. Furthermore, we compared data from hearing individuals, congenitally deaf indiv

Digital Pupillometry and Centroid Shift Changes in Dominant and Nondominant Eyes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the differences between dominant and nondominant eyes in a predominantly young patient population by analyzing the angle kappa, pupil size, and center position in dominant and nondominant eyes. METHODS: A total of 126 young college students (252 eyes) with myopia who underwent femtosecond laser-combined LASIK were randomly selected. Ocular dominance was determined using the hole-in-card test. The WaveLight Allegro Topolyzer (WaveLight Laser Technologies AG, Erlangen, Germany) was used to measure the pupil size and center position. The offset between the pupil center an

Dramatic Loss of Ube3A Expression during Aging of the Mammalian Cortex.

Neurobiological studies of aging are beginning to link functional changes with a loss of experience-dependent plasticity. In the visual system, age-related functional changes include decreases in visual acuity, orientation selectivity, motion perception, and ocular dominance plasticity. A recent paper has shown that Ube3A, an E3 ubiquitin ligase that is absent in Angelman's syndrome, is required for experience-dependent plasticity during development of the visual cortex. Knocking out Ube3A during development leads to rigidity of ocular dominance plasticity that is strikingly similar to the red

Neonatal cerebral hypoxia-ischemia impairs plasticity in rat visual cortex.

Ocular dominance plasticity (ODP) following monocular deprivation (MD) is a model of activity-dependent neural plasticity that is restricted to an early critical period regulated by maturation of inhibition. Unique developmental plasticity mechanisms may improve outcomes following early brain injury. Our objective was to determine the effects of neonatal cerebral hypoxia-ischemia (HI) on ODP. The rationale extends from observations that neonatal HI results in death of subplate neurons, a transient population known to influence development of inhibition. In rodents subjected to neonatal HI and

Abnormal retinotopic organization of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of the tyrosinase-negative albino cat.

Visual defects associated with hypopigmentation have been studied extensively in Siamese and albino cats. Previous research on tyrosinase-negative albino cats has shown that (1) approximately 95% of all nasal and temporal retinal fibers cross at the optic chiasm, and (2) ocular dominance columns normally found in cortex are replaced with hemiretinal domains. In this study, we compared the retinotopic organization of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) and visual cortex in albino cats. Extracellular recordings were conducted in the LGNd, area 17, and area 18 of six albino cats. Recepti

Protocol for recording visual maps in the mouse superior colliculus and visual cortex with intrinsic optical imaging.

Intrinsic optical imaging (IOI) is a powerful approach to record visual-functional maps across the mouse superior colliculus (SC) and primary visual cortex (V1). Here, we present a protocol to map retinotopy and orientation preference in the SC within 15 min using periodic stimulation and Fourier analysis. We also describe how to obtain ocular dominance maps in V1 from independent monocular stimulation. We provide detailed instructions for surgical preparation, imaging setup, and preprocessing techniques. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Visser et

Eye dominance modulates visuospatial attention.

Visuospatial attention has an inherent asymmetry: the leftward bias called pseudoneglect. In typical line bisection tasks, healthy individuals tend to judge the center of a line leftward of the true center, an effect attributed to the right hemisphere dominance in visuospatial attention. Since it has been shown that information perceived by the dominant eye strongly activates the ipsilateral visual cortex, we hypothesized that eye dominance may modulate visuospatial attention bias. Because activation of the left hemisphere induced by left eye dominance should mitigate the right hemisphere domi

Motion dominance in binocular rivalry depends on extraretinal motions.

In binocular rivalry, moving stimulus is dominant over stationary stimulus. This is called motion dominance. The motion here is usually a motion defined on the retina (retinal motion). However, motion can be defined in several different coordinates. It can be defined with respect to objects in the background (object-based motion) or to observers' head or body (spatiotopic motion), as well as to the retinal coordinate. In this study, we examined the role of motions defined by these three coordinates. A dichoptic pair of gratings was presented to create a binocular rivalry, one of which was movi

Asymmetric Optic Disc Edema in Astronauts: A Narrative Review Proposing an Interplay Between Ocular Venous Congestion and Glymphatic Transport.

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a significant ophthalmic complication observed in astronauts during and after long-duration missions, characterized by optic disc edema, globe flattening, choroidal folds, and hyperopic shifts. Unlike papilledema in terrestrial idiopathic intracranial hypertension, optic disc edema in SANS is often asymmetric. The mechanisms underlying this asymmetry remain poorly understood. In this narrative review, we synthesize and critically interpret existing clinical observations, anatomical studies, neuroimaging findings, and experimental evidence,

Genotype-phenotype associations and human eye color.

Although eye color is usually modeled as a simple, Mendelian trait, further research and observation has indicated that eye color does not follow the classical paths of inheritance. Eye color phenotypes demonstrate both epistasis and incomplete dominance. Although there are about 16 different genes responsible for eye color, it is mostly attributed to two adjacent genes on chromosome 15, hect domain and RCC1-like domain-containing protein 2 (HERC2) and ocular albinism (that is, oculocutaneous albinism II (OCA2)). An intron in HERC2 contains the promoter region for OCA2, affecting its expressio

Binocular Afferent Synchrony During Development and in Amblyopia: Evidence From Dominance-Referenced Multichannel Visual Evoked Potentials.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test whether binocular afferent synchrony differs within the visual critical period (CP), beyond the CP, and in amblyopia using dominance-referenced multichannel visual evoked potentials (mcVEPs), and to assess the translational value of interocular timing asymmetries. METHODS: We enrolled 117 participants: 33 healthy children and 28 children with amblyopia (all within the CP) and 56 healthy adults (post-CP). Pattern-reversal (PR-VEP) and flash VEP (F-VEP) responses were recorded at O1/Oz/O2 referenced to Fz. Lateral channels were relabeled relative t

Restoration of neuronal plasticity by a phosphodiesterase type 1 inhibitor in a model of fetal alcohol exposure.

Although some studies showed the efficacy of phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors as neuronal plasticity enhancers, little is known about the effectiveness of these drugs to improve plasticity in cases of mental retardation. Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the leading cause of mental retardation in the western world. Using a combination of electrophysiological and optical imaging techniques, we show here that vinpocetine, a PDE type I inhibitor, restores ocular dominance plasticity in the ferret model of fetal alcohol exposure. Our finding should contribute to a better understanding and treatmen

Micro-field evoked potentials recorded from the porcine sub-dural cortical surface utilizing a microelectrode array.

A sub-dural surface microelectrode array designed to detect micro-field evoked potentials has been developed. The device is comprised of an array of 350-microm square gold contacts, with bidirectional spacing of 150 microm, contained within a polyimide Kapton material. Cytotoxicity testing suggests that the device is suitable for use with animal and human patients. Implementation of the device in animal studies revealed that reliable evoked potentials could be acquired. Further work will be needed to determine how these micro-field potentials, which demonstrate selectivity for one eye, relate

Eye movements in heterophoria.

Reference is made to earlier reports by the author in which versional recovery eye movements were observed during the cover test in the non-occluded eye in case of heterophoria. This provided support for Hering's Law, although the magnitude of the versional movement did not relate to the degree of heterophoria. Recent studies of eye movements during the cover test on very small heterophorias have suggested there is a threshold value below which these versional recovery movements are absent, and that is presence depends on such factors as the size of the phoria, the degree of ocular motor domin

Possible autosomal-recessive ocular coloboma.

Ocular coloboma as an isolated anomaly often is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Possible autosomal recessive inheritance is suggested by the presence of colobomatous malformations in a brother and sister whose parents have apparently normal eyes. Possible genetic heterogeneity of isolated ocular coloboma makes genetic counseling in sporadic cases difficult since cases may be due to autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive mutations and nongenetic causes.

Delineating function and connectivity of optokinetic hubs in the cerebellum and the brainstem.

Optokinetic eye movements are crucial for keeping a stable image on the retina during movements of the head. These eye movements can be differentiated into a cortically generated response (optokinetic look nystagmus) and the highly reflexive optokinetic stare nystagmus, which is controlled by circuits in the brainstem and cerebellum. The contributions of these infratentorial networks and their functional connectivity with the cortical eye fields are still poorly understood in humans. To map ocular motor centres in the cerebellum and brainstem, we studied stare nystagmus using small-field optok
