Norovirus contamination of a drinking water supply at a hotel resort.

AIM: To investigate a waterborne gastroenteritis outbreak and consider wider environmental contamination concerns. METHODS: An acute gastroenteritis outbreak was investigated through interviews, analysis of faecal samples, drinking water and environmental water samples. RESULTS: A total of 53 cases reported an illness of acute gastroenteritis following stays and/or dining at a hotel or neighbouring resort in southern New Zealand over a 1-month period in early spring 2012. The consumption of table or tap water was strongly associated with the illness. Faecal samples were positive for noroviru

Estimating effects of improved drinking water and sanitation on cholera.

Demand for adequate provision of drinking-water and sanitation facilities to promote public health and economic growth is increasing in the rapidly urbanizing countries of the developing world. With a panel of data on Asia and Africa from 1990 to 2008, associations are estimated between the occurrence of cholera outbreaks, the case rates in given outbreaks, the mortality rates associated with cholera and two disease control mechanisms, drinking-water and sanitation services. A statistically significant and negative effect is found between drinking-water services and both cholera case rates as

Are oral contraceptives a significant contributor to the estrogenicity of drinking water?

Recent observed feminization of aquatic animals has raised concerns about estrogenic compounds in water supplies and the potential for these chemicals to reach drinking water. Public perception frequently attributes this feminization to oral contraceptives (OCs) in wastewater and raises concerns that exposure to OCs in drinking water may contribute to the recent rise in human reproductive problems. This paper reviews the literature regarding various sources of estrogens, in surface, source and drinking water, with an emphasis on the active molecule that comes from OCs. It includes discussion o

[Problems in the monitoring of bromine-containing substances in the drinking water].

The water concentrations of bromide ions at the level of 0.2 mg/dm3 or higher, which are sufficient for redox reaction of humin compounds under the action of potent oxidizing agents present a potential hazard in the hygienic terms of formation of transformation products, which also agrees with the hygienic standards. The concentration of bromide ions below 0.1 mg/dm3 can be considered to be relatively safe in the terms of production of organobromine compounds.

Understanding medicinal taste and odour formation in drinking waters.

The formation of bromophenols during chlorination of phenol- and bromide-containing waters can be critical for taste and odour problems in drinking waters. The work performed has confirmed that flavour threshold concentrations of some bromophenols are in the ng/L range. In addition, under typical drinking water conditions, kinetic experiments and model simulations performed have shown that (1) bromination is the predominant reaction pathway, (2) bromophenol reaction kinetics are rapid leading to taste-and-odour episodes that last for short periods of 10-20 min, (3) increasing phenol concentrat

Neurotoxicity produced by dibromoacetic acid in drinking water of rats.

An evaluation of potential adverse human health effects of disinfection byproducts requires study of both cancer and noncancer endpoints; however, no studies have evaluated the neurotoxic potential of a common haloacetic acid, dibromoacetic acid (DBA). This study characterized the neurotoxicity of DBA during 6-month exposure in the drinking water of rats. Adolescent male and female Fischer 344 rats were administered DBA at 0, 0.2, 0.6, and 1.5 g/l. On a mg/kg/day basis, the consumed dosages decreased greatly over the exposure period, with average intakes of 0, 20, 72, and 161 mg/kg/day. Weight

[Effects of fluoride in drinking water on health of deciduous teeth].

INTRODUCTION: High incidence of decayed deciduous teeth, as well as lack of adequate therapy, makes tooth decay prevention very important. One of the simplest ways to reduce tooth decay is fluoridation of drinking water. The optimal concentration of fluoride in drinking water is 1 ppm/l, and many waters naturally contain this quantity. Waters in Vojvodina are mainly poor in fluoride, except in a few regions. It has long been postulated that fluoride has a prophyilactic effect during intrauterine life. Today a theory of greater local impact of fluoride has been accepted, as well as its role in

Drinking water treatment processes for removal of Cryptosporidium and Giardia.

Major waterborne cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis outbreaks associated with contaminated drinking water have been linked to evidence of suboptimal treatment. Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts are particularly more resistant than Giardia lamblia cysts to removal and inactivation by conventional water treatment (coagulation, sedimentation, filtration and chlorine disinfection); therefore, extensive research has been focused on the optimization of treatment processes and application of new technologies to reduce concentrations of viable/infectious oocysts to a level that prevents disease. The majori

Beryllium in food and drinking water--a summary of available knowledge.

In an overall evaluation of the situation published by IARC in 1993, beryllium and beryllium compounds are identified as carcinogens to humans. This prompted the initiation of this study on beryllium which reviews the situation up to 1998 on the aspects: properties and applications, toxicity, analytical procedures for food and drinking water, reference materials, occurrence in food and drinking water and estimates of daily dietary exposure. Special emphasis is put on analytical aspects and levels of beryllium in food and drinking water.

Monitoring of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in Czech drinking water sources.

In Czech raw water sources for drinking water supply, Cryptosporidium was found in numbers from 0 to 7400 per 100 liters and Giardia from 0 to 485 per 100 liters. The summer floods of 1997 probably brought the highest numbers of Cryptosporidium oocysts into one of the reservoirs sampled; since then these numbers decreased steadily. A relatively high number of Cryptosporidium oocysts was found in one sample of treated water. Repeated sampling demonstrated that this was a sporadic event. The reason for the presence of Cryptosporidium in a sample of treated drinking-water is unclear and requires

Transmission of intestinal blastocystosis related to the quality of drinking water.

A cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate the risk factors of Blastocystis hominis infection in the Thai army population of the 11th Infantry Division, Chachoengsao Province, Thailand. 201 army personnel and their family members were enrolled in this study. Intestinal parasitic infections in this population were assessed by stool examination using simple smear, formalin/ether technique and Kato-thick smear. Approximately one third of the specimens were positive for one or more intestinal parasites. With the prevalence of 21.9%, B. hominis was the most common intestinal parasite found i

[Manganese in drinking water and its contribution to human exposure].

Methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT) has been used in Canada since 1976 as an additive in unleaded gasoline. The combustion of MMT leads to the emission of Mn oxides to the environment and may represent a potential risk to public health. It therefore seems important to assess the associated Mn exposure. The present study is part of a broader research program on total human exposure to Mn and aims specifically at assessing the level of exposure to Mn and other metals via drinking water. A comparative study was performed between two groups of workers (garage mechanics and blue coll

The relationship of pulmonary function to copper concentrations in drinking water.

Copper has been shown to be an important cofactor for certain enzymatic reactions. Specifically, cross-linking of elastin is inhibited by copper deficiency. In animal models, this inhibition leads to weakened connective tissue and pathologic changes in the lungs consistent with emphysema. To explore the potential relationship of copper exposure to level of pulmonary function in humans, we examined copper concentrations in tap water in the homes of 297 adult male subjects involved in the Normative Aging Study. Forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) were ob

Suspected Drinking Water Poisoning in a Domestic Kitten with Methemoglobinemia.

A 4-month-old male indoor cat was referred for dyspnea, mental dullness and weakness, which appeared two days earlier. The cat had been adopted at 3 months of age. Physical exam showed cyanosis, dyspnea and mild hypothermia. The "spot test" was supportive of methemoglobinemia. Co-oximetry blood gas analysis revealed severe methemoglobinemia (81.40%), severe hyperchloremia and mild hyponatremia. CBC, biochemistry and urinalysis were within normal limits, blood smear showed the presence of Heinz bodies. Treatment was instituted with oxygen therapy, methylene blue 1% solution, ascorbic acid, intr

Drinking water contaminants in California and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy.

UNLABELLED: Environmental pollutants have been associated with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia, though few have focused on drinking water contamination. Water pollution can be an important source of exposures that may contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: We linked water quality data on 13 contaminants and two violations from the California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool to birth records from vital statistics and hospital discharge records (2007-2012) to examine the relationship between drinking
