Photobiomodulation for the prevention of oral side effects secondary to head and neck cancer therapy: results of a randomised, single-blind clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: A significant increase of 61.6 % in new cases of head and neck cancer (HNC) worldwide is projected by 2050. Multimodal treatments for HNC often result in debilitating oral side effects like oral mucositis (OM). Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy shows promise in managing these side effects, yet standardized protocols are lacking. This randomized clinical trial aims to evaluate PBM's effectiveness in preventing and treating oral side effects and related symptoms in HNC patients. METHODS: We compared PBM with standard treatment in HNC patients at a single centre. PBM efficacy was ev

Comparison of Doctors' and Breast Cancer Patients' Perceptions of Docetaxel, Epirubicin, and Cyclophosphamide (TEC) Toxicity.

In Spain, around 26,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year, representing nearly 30% of all cancers in women. The aim this study was to compare the perceptions of nonhematologic toxicities after administration of a docetaxel, epirubicin, and cyclophosphamide (TEC) regimen between breast cancer patients and oncologists. Furthermore, the relationship between such adverse events and quality of life (QOL) was evaluated. Cross-sectional study carried out among 92 breast cancer patients who received TEC as neoadjuvant or adjuvant treatment. The main nonhematologic toxicities experienced b

Brazilian organic propolis for prevention and treatment of radiation-related oral acute toxicities in head and neck cancer patients: A double-blind randomized clinical trial.

Background: Oral mucositis (OM) is one of the most important acute toxicities from radiotherapy (RT) in head and neck cancer patients and can impair oncologic treatment. Dysphagia, dysgeusia, pain, and oral candidiasis are other common toxicities. Brazilian Organic Propolis (BOP) is a recently described propolis variant and BOP types 4 and 6 have shown important antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties. Purpose: To investigate the use of BOP as a preventive and/or complementary therapeutic option for radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis, dysphagia, dysgeusia, pain, and oral can

Patient-reported Outcomes of Adverse Events After Perioperative Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer: A Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Chemotherapy for breast cancer is associated with several adverse events (AEs), many of which are under-reported when assessed solely by physicians. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) obtained via structured questionnaires allow for more accurate assessment of the patients' symptoms. This prospective observational study used a PRO-based questionnaire to assess the long-term course of AEs among patients with breast cancer who underwent perioperative chemotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with operable breast cancer who received perioperative chemotherapy with a docetaxel/cy

Emerging roles of the renin-angiotensin system in select oral diseases.

OBJECTIVES: The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays essential roles in cardiovascular and renal function regulation. Recent studies have shown that the RAS components are widely expressed in oral tissues, but their roles in oral diseases remain underexplored. This review aims to summarize the effects of the RAS in select oral diseases including oral squamous cells carcinoma (OSCC), periodontitis, oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), and ageusia/dysgeusia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Data searches were performed using PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus through July 2024. A narrative overview of current li

Sudden onset, acute loss of taste and smell in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Early detection, isolation and management of COVID-19 are crucial to contain the current pandemic. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently included 'sudden loss of taste (dysgeusia/ageusia) and smell (anosmia/hyposmia)' as symptoms of COVID-19. If indeed these symptoms are reliable and specific forerunner symptoms of COVID-19, then it may facilitate detection and containment of the disease. Hence, we systematically evaluated the contemporary evidence on dysgeusia and anosmia as trigger prodromal symptoms, and their prevalence in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: Ovi
