Transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (EES) provides a high-resolution, wide-field view of the middle ear compared with the conventional operating microscope, reducing the need for a postauricular incision or mastoidectomy. Our group has shown in cadaveric human temporal bone studies that radiant energy from the endoscope tip can quickly elevate temperatures of the tympanic cavity. Elevated temperatures of the middle ear are associated with acute auditory brainstem response shifts in animal models. In EES, proposed methods to decrease middle ear temperature include frequent removal of the endoscop

In 2004, Sininger and Cone-Wesson examined asymmetries in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of otoacoustic emissions (OAE) in infants, reporting that distortion-product (DP)OAE SNR was larger in the left ear, whereas transient-evoked (TE)OAE SNR was larger in the right. They proposed that cochlear and brainstem asymmetries facilitate development of brain-hemispheric specialization for sound processing. Similarly, in 2006 Sininger and Cone-Wesson described ear asymmetries mainly favoring the right ear in infant auditory brainstem responses (ABRs). The present study analyzed 2640 infant responses

INTRODUCTION: Conchal crus and Stahl ear deformities pose challenges in pediatric plastic surgery. Surgical interventions are associated with complications such as infections, hematomas, and keloids. Ear molding is a nonsurgical method effective for newborns but reportedly less so for older infants. This study aims to demonstrate the findings following the application of a novel ear molding technique in infants with conchal crus and Stahl ear deformities.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 30 infants (age ≤ 3 mo of age) with conchal crus and Stahl ear deformities (n=39 ears). A 3-minu

The middle ear is located in the center of the temporal bone and bears a highly complex anatomy. The recently introduced exclusively endoscopic transcanal approach to the middle ear is a minimally invasive technique sparing the bone and mucosa of the mastoid bone, since the middle ear is accessed through the external auditory canal. This emerging method has several advantages over the traditional (microscopic) approaches to the middle ear such as the panoramic wide-angle views of the anatomy, the possibility to approach and magnify tiny structures, and the possibility of looking around the cor

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic ear surgery is becoming an accepted technique in otological surgery, in the management of chronic otitis media.
METHODS: The technique was introduced to the humanitarian care setting of an ear camp in Nepal to consider the appropriateness of the technique in this type of clinical setting.
RESULTS: Fifteen cases of myringoplasty were successfully completed.
CONCLUSION: The apparent advantages of the endoscopic approach over the traditional microscopic one were the ease of transporting the equipment and the optimal view obtained of the tympanic membrane. The ability for

BACKGROUND: Tumor of the temporal bone is a rare disease with a very poor prognosis. Surgery and postoperative radiotherapy are usually the recommended treatments for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the external and middle ear, which may cause conductive hearing loss. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the audiologic results and compliance of active middle ear implant (AMEI) and establish the feasibility of the procedure in a patient treated for middle ear cancer.
METHODS: A 73-year-old patient treated with lateral petrosectomy, neck dissection, reconstruction/obliteration by pedicled

Previous research conducted into the use of the human ear in the field of forensic identification has focused upon the use of grids and manual methods to measure and catalogue the different anatomical features of the ear. To date, few have considered the importance of the presence of ear piercings and their possible role in human identification. This study aims to highlight the common distribution of piercings of both ears in both genders and to explore the effect of piercings on earprints. The presence of a piercing may, in part, help to explain why partial and not whole earprints are sometim

Human histopathologic studies have demonstrated that amniotic fluid cellular contents, keratinized squamous epithelial cells and lanugo hair, induce an intense inflammatory reaction including granulation tissue in the neonatal temporal bone. To investigate this reaction over a prolonged period, an animal model was studied. An aliquot of sterilized autologous hair and keratinized epithelial cells was placed into 14 gerbil bullae; saline was used as a contralateral control. The animals were sacrificed at intervals up to 6 months and the temporal bones were studied by light microscopy. All animal

Patients with facial palsy and middle ear disease, which may be chronic but clinically occult, may have a cholesteatoma with extension medially along the facial canal. In two patients, axial computed tomographic (CT) scans demonstrated involvement of the medial petrous bone. Patients with vertigo and chronic middle ear disease may have a cholesteatoma with a "fistula" between the middle and inner ears. Although the fistula usually involves the lateral semicircular canal, the cholesteatoma may pass through the oval window. In two patients, coronal CT scans showed extension to the oval window in

To pilot a substantive randomized control trial comparing post-operative external ear canal pack with no ear pack after middle ear surgery, 32 adults undergoing primary posterior bony canal wall preserving middle ear surgery were randomized to have either a bismuth iodoform paraffin paste pack or no ear pack post-operatively. Outcome measures included clinician- and patient-recorded visual analogue scale scores for ear signs and symptoms at 3 weeks and 3 months and audiometric findings at 3 months post-operatively. There was no statistically significant inter-group difference in 3-week clinici

Otitis media can be a consequence of chronic otitis externa and could represent a perpetuating factor. While the microbiota of the EEC in healthy dogs and in the presence of otitis externa has been described, only sparse information is available concerning the normal microbiota of the middle ear. The objective was to compare the tympanic bulla (TB) with the external ear canal (EEC) microbiota in healthy dogs. Six healthy experimental Beagle dogs were selected based on the absence of otitis externa, negative cytology and bacterial culture from the TB. Samples from the EEC and TB were collected

UNLABELLED: MELAS - an acronym for mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes - is a multiorgan disease caused by a mutation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Its clinical manifestations are highly variable; mainly stroke-like episodes, seizures, recurrent headaches, or muscle weakness. However, gastrointestinal complications such as chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (IPO), pancreatitis, gastroparesis and hepatopathy are also common. In this report we describe a young patient with gastrointestinal complication of MELAS which led to superior mesenteric artery synd

Benign dendritic melanocytic proliferation is usually observed in the skin. We report an extremely rare case of a melanocytic lesion in the middle ear mucosa. Only 3 cases of melanocytic lesions in the middle ear have been reported. Our report is the only one that describes an adult with a melanocytic lesion in the middle ear that extended to the inner ear and nasopharyngeal mucosa. A 23-year-old female presented with profound sensory neural hearing loss and recurrent discharge from the right ear. Examination revealed a blue right tympanic membrane with a small perforation. Computed tomography
