Subsequent malignant neoplasms after primary hematological malignancy in adult patients.

Patients with primary hematological malignancy (HM) are at an elevated risk of subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMNs), which is a common concern after treatment of primary cancer. We identified 45,533 patients aged ≥20 years and diagnosed with primary HM in Finland from 1992 to 2019 from the Finnish Cancer Registry and estimated standardized incidence ratios (SIR) and excess absolute risks per 1000 person-years (EAR) for SMNs. A total of 6076 SMNs were found (4604 solid and 1472 hematological SMNs). The SIRs were higher for hematological SMNs (SIR 4.9, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.7-5.2) comp

[Ossifying fibroma of the temporal bone].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation of ossifying fibroma of the temporal bone, and to discuss its diagnosis and treatment. METHOD: A rare case of ossifying fibroma of the temporal bone was presented. The patient was a 8-year-old boy with a one year history of left ear discomfort, suppurative otorrhea and progressive hearing loss. Physical examination of the ear revealed a stenosis of left external auditory canal (EAC), and an obvious expansion at mastoid region. Audiometry showed no hearing of the left ear. A postauricular approach was used to expose the mass. Frozen section eval

Chondrosarcoma of the Jugular Foramen: A Case Report.

The vast majority of chondrosarcomas of the skull (CS) are located at the skull base and represent locally aggressive malignant tumors that account for 0.15% of all intracranial neoplasms. Complete surgical resection with wide surgical margins is currently the main treatment strategy, but can be hard to achieve due to the complex anatomy of the head and neck. The jugular foramen, situated in the floor of the posterior fossa and posterolaterally to the petro-occipital suture, is a remarkably rare location for CS. A case of primary CS of the jugular foramen in a 65-year-old patient is reported,

A mistaken identity: rhabdomyosarcoma of the middle ear cleft misdiagnosed as chronic suppurative otitis media with temporal lobe abscess.

A 5-year-old girl presented with a 3-month history of left side facial palsy, followed sequentially by purulent ear discharge, complete external ophthalmoplaegia and blurred vision. On clinical examination she was febrile with left-sided conductive hearing loss. She was clinically diagnosed to have chronic suppurative otitis media of the unsafe type with petrous apicitis, middle cranial fossa abscess and cavernous sinus involvement. Preliminary CT scan findings were reported as a large left temporal lobe abscess and left otitis media with cholesteatoma. MRI of the brain obtained later corrobor

Late effects of radiotherapy on hearing.

The effect of radiotherapy on hearing was studied in 30 patients who were treated by surgery and radiotherapy for a parotid neoplasm. Functions of the irradiated ear were compared with those of the non-irradiated ear in the same patient. Tympanometry showed a small but significant reduction of static compliance on the irradiated side when compared with the non-irradiated side. Audiometry showed a significant increase in hearing loss in the 1-2, 4-8 and 10-20 kHz ranges that increased with frequency. This hearing loss was mainly sensorineural in contrast to hearing loss at 250-500 Hz, where it

A Rare Case of Pleomorphic Adenoma in the Internal Auditory Canal.

Pleomorphic adenoma is a common tumor of the salivary gland tumor, but it is rare in the ear. To the authors' knowledge, this patient is the first reported case of pleomorphic adenoma arising in the internal auditory canal. There have been few documents reporting the manifestations and the therapy strategy of this disease. This study clearly demonstrated the experience in treating pleomorphic adenoma, including the characteristics of the clinical manifestation, the key procedures of surgery, and key points of the diagnosis. The translabyrinthine approach under the microscope performed to remov

Ear canal and middle-ear tumors: a single-institution series of 87 patients.

BACKGROUND: Ear canal and middle ear tumors are rare and exhibit variability in histology and clinical manifestation. Surgical resection remains the treatment of choice, but individualized approach is needed to preserve function when possible. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To review the management and outcome of ear canal and middle ear tumors at an academic referral center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) patient files were searched for clinically and histologically confirmed ear canal and middle ear tumors over a 14-year period. The minimum follow-up time was 2 years. RESULTS

A Rare Combination of Acquired Lymphangioma of the External Auditory Canal and Cholesteatoma in the Middle Ear Cavity.

Lymphangioma (LM) is a rare but benign tumor derived from lymphatic malformation, which is extremely rare in the auditory canal or middle ear cavity. We presented a case of acquired lymphangioma of the external auditory canal combined with cholesteatoma in the middle ear cavity. To our best knowledge, this is the first case of combined lesions of lymphangioma and cholesteatoma in English literature.

Linear arrangement of hypopigmented Spitz nevi on the ear after trauma.

A 10-year-old boy had multiple papules after surgery on a primary lesion on his left ear. The papules were pink and showed a linear arrangement around the helix. Histopathological examination of two separate lesions showed proliferation of epithelioid cells in the dermis and some of them formed nests. No melanin was found in the epithelioid cells, and immunohistochemistry staining with S100, HMB45 and Melan-A were positive in the neoplasm cells. According to the clinical and histopathological characteristics, it was diagnosed as hypopigmented Spitz nevi with linear arrangement after trauma.

[Intralabyrinthine schwannoma extending into the round window niche and internal auditory canal].

Intralabyrinthine schwannomas (ILSs) are rare benign neoplasms arising from distal branches of the cochlear, superior vestibular, or inferior vestibular nerves. We report on a case of ILS with extensions to the round window niche and internal auditory canal (IAC) in a 47-year-old male. The patient noticed sudden hearing loss and tinnitus in his left ear at the age of 36, received steroid therapies, but was left with complete deafness. He had suffered from repetitive vertigo attacks for 6 months at 41. At 46 when he presented with deterioration of his left tinnitus, he was finally diagnosed as

Atypical presentation of cutaneous meningioma.

Cutaneous meningiomas are rare tumors of ectopic meningeal tissue in the dermis or subcutis and are most commonly located on the scalp and around the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. We present a case of cutaneous meningioma with an unusual presentation on the upper arm, but with positivity for epithelial membrane antigen to support the diagnosis of meningioma. Lack of pancytokeratin AE1/3 and p63 allowed us to rule out a keratinocytic tumor, such as squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. The absence of smooth muscle actin, FXIIIa, CD163, and CD34 allowed us to rule out a leiomyoma, der

Papillary Cystadenocarcinoma of the Parotid Gland: A Rare Case Report.

Papillary cystadenocarcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland, characterized by noticeable cystic and solid areas with papillary endophytic projections. These tumours lack features that characterize cystic variants of several more common salivary gland carcinomas. It was first described in 1991 by World Health Organization as a separate entity and cystadenocarcinoma with or without papillary component in the AFIP classification. Most of these tumours occurred in the major salivary glands followed by minor salivary glands. Cystadenocarcinoma is the malignant counterpart of cys

[Pathology of the ear].

The ear comprises several different anatomic areas, each of which may be the primitive site or may be secondarily involved by different pathologies. Some lesions are frequent but are rarely biopsied (acute external or middle ear otitis); in others, the material obtained at surgery (for example in otosclerosis) may be poorly informative; others are rare but require precise pathologic diagnosis. A description of all ear pathologies is out of the focus of this paper. All the more, many lesions are not different when localized in the ear. Will be presented only lesions that are specific of the ear

Recurrence of glomangiopericytoma in infraorbital region.

Glomangiopericytomas (GPCs) are rare spindle cell neoplasms that usually develop in the sinonasal tract and possess a low malignant potential. Although rare, most cases have been found in various areas of otolaryngological importance, notably the deep neck spaces, eyes, larynx, tongue and middle ear. However, no cases of recurrence of infraorbital GPC have been reported in the literature. Total surgical resection is the treatment of choice. Nonetheless this condition recurs in cases of incomplete excision. Because of the rarity of the disease and its prevalence, early detection and care are cr

Management of benign middle ear tumors: A series of 7 cases.

Benign middle ear tumors represent a rare group of neoplasms that vary widely in their pathology, anatomy, and clinical findings. These factors have made it difficult to establish guidelines for the resection of such tumors. Here we present 7 unique cases of these rare and diverse tumors and draw from our experience to recommend optimal surgical management. Based on our experience, a postauricular incision is necessary in nearly all cases. Mastoidectomy is required for tumors that extend into the mastoid cavity. Whenever exposure or hemostasis is believed to be inadequate with simple mastoidec

The paleopathology of an Aleutian mummy.

A multidisciplinary team examined an Aleutian mummy from the collection of the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. The mummy, dating from the early 18th century, was of a middle-aged woman who had suffered from pulmonary and ear infections, atherosclerosis, pediculosis, and degenerative joint disease. Another finding was anthracosis, common in ancient bodies and related to indoor heating and cooking fires. Skeletal lead was not found, in contrast with the high levels seen in modern persons. No neoplasms were identified, again consistent with the r

Treatment with somatostatin analogues and PRRT in metastatic middle ear adenoma with neuroendocrine features.

SUMMARY: Middle ear adenomas with neuroendocrine features (ANEF) are rare, with an estimated 150 reported cases. They usually pursue an indolent clinical course. Four reported cases of middle ear ANEF with distant metastases were treated with surgery, external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) and chemotherapy. To date, no successful systemic treatment for malignant behaviour of this rare tumour has been reported. Long-acting somatostatin analogues (SSAs) and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) have been used in well-differentiated metastatic neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), but their use h
