Asymptomatic MS.

"Asymptomatic multiple sclerosis (MS)" or "subclinical MS" describes "a clinically silent disease state of MS" discovered by chance either by imaging or at autopsy, or with incidental findings shown by other diagnostic tools that are consistent or suggestive of MS, and that cannot be explained by any other disease or condition. Since the early 1960s there have been a number of autopsy studies reporting cases, in which histopathological brain changes consistent with MS were found, despite that none had any clinical symptom or sign of the disease during their lifetime. Several reports have also

[The importance of early diagnosis and intervention in children diagnosed with reading disorder. Case studies].

Reading Disorder (RD) belongs to Specific Learning Disorders within the chapter of Neurodevelopmental Disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition. Previous research shows that the time of the diagnosis of RD - early (before starting school) or late - has a great impact on the prognosis. In the current paper we present the cases of two children diagnosed with RD. Our cases demonstrate that if RD is diagnosed in early childhood, the child's and his/her family's quality of life can be influenced in a positive direction, while late recognition of RD might influ

Early Identification of Reading Comprehension Difficulties.

Most research on early identification of reading disabilities has focused on word reading problems and little attention has been given to reading comprehension difficulties. In this study, we investigated whether measures of language ability and/or response to language intervention in kindergarten uniquely predicted reading comprehension difficulties in third grade. A total of 366 children were administered a battery of screening measures at the beginning of kindergarten and progress monitoring probes across the school year. A subset of children also received a 26-week Tier 2 language interven

Children's classroom engagement and school readiness gains in prekindergarten.

Child engagement in prekindergarten classrooms was examined using 2,751 children (mean age=4.62) enrolled in public prekindergarten programs that were part of the Multi-State Study of Pre-Kindergarten and the State-Wide Early Education Programs Study. Latent class analysis was used to classify children into 4 profiles of classroom engagement: free play, individual instruction, group instruction, and scaffolded learning. Free play children exhibited smaller gains across the prekindergarten year on indicators of language/literacy and mathematics compared to other children. Individual instruction

Child development and long-term outcomes: a population health perspective and summary of successful interventions.

Studies of socioeconomic gradients in mortality in wealthy societies reveal that they have been persist, and included most of the principal causes of death, even during the era when these principal causes of death have entirely changed. This observation has led to an interest in the ways in which the diversity of conditions of life, unfolding over the life cycle, can become embedded in human biology and subsequently affect health status and vitality. There is evidence that childhood experiences affect subsequent health status (as well as well-being and competence) in profound and long-lasting

Association between timing of psychological intervention and reconstruction of worldview, life perspective, and values in adolescents with depression.

BACKGROUND: Timely access to structured psycho-educational intervention is crucial for cognitive-motivational recovery in adolescents with depression, a population in a critical developmental stage of consolidating core belief systems. Drawing upon the theory of educational timing, the initiation of these interventions may represent a critical window for reshaping worldview, life perspective, and values. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between intervention timing and the reconstruction of these existential constructs, thereby providing an empirical basis for optimizing p

"Make it a childhood memory and not a therapeutic memory": Young people's experience of early childhood intervention in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Young people with developmental concerns, delay or disability should have a voice in issues that are important in their lives. While many young people have expressed that early childhood intervention (ECI) was necessary and beneficial, some have reported having distressing experiences. Understanding and responding to the perspectives of young people contributes to improved services and outcomes for children with disability and their families. OBJECTIVES: (a) To explore and describe the experiences of young people (15 - 32 years) who received ECI services in Australia during childh

Exploring early intervention models at home to support the development of preterm infants: A literature review to guide professionals and involve parents.

BACKGROUND: Prematurity a critical determinant of infant's neurodevelopmental outcomes. Parents of preterm infants are more likely to experience mental health issues during and following hospitalization, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety. Given that at-risk infants are particularly sensitive to the beneficial and harmful effects of their environment, care for vulnerable newborns should not be limited to the period of hospitalization. AIMS: The present research aims to explore early home-based intervention models that may be most appropriate for supporting the d

Comparing the Implementation Context for Early Intervention Services Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic not only led to drastic changes in the implementation context for early intervention and early childhood special education services in 2020, but has had an enduring effect on the organizations, educators, families, and children with developmental delays and disorders. Through secondary data analysis, characteristics of toddlers with autism being served in a publicly funded center-based early intervention program as well as the characteristics of their educators are examined, comparing those who were enrolled in (a) two randomized trials conducted prior to the pandemic and

Fatty Liver Disease: Enter the Metabolic Era.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this review is to summarize the recent literature linking HIV to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This is a pressing issue due to the scale of the MASLD epidemic and the urgent need for preventive and therapeutic strategies for MASLD in PWH. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence of MASLD in PWH is higher than previously appreciated, approaching 50% depending on the population and definition of MASLD. MASLD in PWH is likely multifactorial due to risk factors present in the general population such as metabolic syndrome, and features uniq

Effectiveness of Screening in Early Intervention Settings to Improve Diagnosis of Autism and Reduce Health Disparities.

IMPORTANCE: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends referring children at elevated risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for Part C early intervention (EI) services, but notes that EI services often fail to provide ASD screening. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the hypothesis that a multistage screening protocol for ASD implemented in 3 EI settings will increase autism detection, especially among Spanish-speaking families. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Difference-in-differences analyses with propensity score weighting of a quasi-experimental design using administrative data on 3 implement

Managing repetitive behaviours in young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD): pilot randomised controlled trial of a new parent group intervention.

Early intervention for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) tends to focus on enhancing social-communication skills. We report the acceptability, feasibility and impact on child functioning of a new 8 weeks parent-group intervention to manage restricted and repetitive behaviours (RRB) in young children with ASD aged 3-7 years. Forty-five families took part in the pilot RCT. A range of primary and secondary outcome measures were collected on four occasions (baseline, 10, 18 and 24 weeks) to capture both independent ratings and parent-reported changes in RRB. This pilot established that parents were w

CDC Kerala 9: Effectiveness of low intensity home based early intervention for autism spectrum disorder in India.

OBJECTIVE: To validate effectiveness of low intensity, home based early intervention (EI) models in autism for countries with low disability resources. METHODS: Fifty-two toddlers and young children were assessed before and after intervention with Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Vineland Social Maturity Scale, and Receptive-Expressive Emergent Language Scale. Developmental and speech therapists helped mothers assemble low-cost training kits based on the developmental age of the child, gave initial training in the basic behavioral technique to address the three autism symptom clusters at home.

Bridging medicine and education for global developmental delay: a cluster sampling study on screening, diagnosis, and intervention in preschool children.

BACKGROUND: Global developmental delay (GDD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in preschool children. Early screening and integrated intervention are critical for optimal neurodevelopment, yet robust evidence remains limited. METHODS: A non-randomized controlled trial was conducted included 3,216 children aged 3-6 years for three-level GDD screening. Thirty children with confirmed GDD [defined as total General Quotient <70 on the Chinese version of the Griffiths Mental Development Scales (GDS-C)] were allocated to receive 6-month medical-educational integrated intervention or convention

An Intervention to Increase Detection of Developmental Delays in Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

BACKGROUND: Low-income children are at risk for under-detection of developmental disabilities (DDs). Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clinics see low-income children regularly in early childhood and could be an important source of referrals to developmental services. METHODS: This was a site-randomized trial of an intervention to train WIC staff in early identification of DDs, using Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Learn the Signs Act Early (LTSAE) developmental monitoring materials. Seven county WIC agencies in Oregon enrolled: 4 interv
