The Dallol Geothermal Area, Northern Afar (Ethiopia)-An Exceptional Planetary Field Analog on Earth.

The Dallol volcano and its associated hydrothermal field are located in a remote area of the northern Danakil Depression in Ethiopia, a region only recently appraised after decades of inaccessibility due to severe political instability and the absence of infrastructure. The region is notable for hosting environments at the very edge of natural physical-chemical extremities. It is surrounded by a wide, hyperarid salt plain and is one of the hottest (average annual temperatureDallol: 36-38°C) and most acidic natural systems (pHDallol ≈0) on Earth. Spectacular geomorphologies and mineral deposits

Effects of the space environment and re-adaptation to Earth's gravity on astronauts' plasma proteome.

We performed a label-free quantitative plasma proteomic analysis on samples from eight astronauts who completed a 6-month mission aboard the International Space Station, using an Orbitrap Fusion Lumos mass spectrometer (MS). Blood samples were collected from each astronaut at different times, i.e., pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight. We found that the abundance levels of 16 proteins were significantly altered (p ≤ 0.05), particularly in the in-flight samples. The functions of these 16 proteins are associated with four major pathways that pose health risks to astronauts: impairment of the i

Prebiotic chemistry in eutectic solutions at the water-ice matrix.

A crystalline ice matrix at subzero temperatures can maintain a liquid phase where organic solutes and salts concentrate to form eutectic solutions. This concentration effect converts the confined reactant solutions in the ice matrix, sometimes making condensation and polymerisation reactions occur more favourably. These reactions occur at significantly high rates from a prebiotic chemistry standpoint, and the labile products can be protected from degradation. The experimental study of the synthesis of nitrogen heterocycles at the ice-water system showed the efficiency of this scenario and cou

Increasing UV-B radiation at the earth's surface and potential effects on aqueous mercury cycling and toxicity.

In the past two decades, a great deal of attention has been paid to the environmental fate of mercury (Hg), and this is exemplified by the growing number of international conferences devoted uniquely to Hg cycling and its impacts on ecosystem functions and life. This interest in the biogeochemistry of Hg has resulted in a significant improvement of our understanding of its impact on the environment and human health. However, both past and current research, have been primarily oriented toward the study of direct impact of anthropogenic activities on Hg cycling. Besides a few indirect effects su

Chromium isotope constraints on deep mantle oxidation from the Early Archean to Paleoproterozoic.

The evolution of Earth's mantle redox state is central to understanding the rise of atmospheric oxygen and the development of a habitable planet. However, whether the deep mantle has become increasingly oxidized over geological time and its underlying mechanisms remain debated. Here, we analyze chromium isotopes in 66 ancient volcanic rocks (komatiites and picrites) spanning from 3.48 to 1.87 billion years ago combined with an oxygen fugacity (fO2) estimate (Fe3+/ΣFe) derived from thermodynamic simulations. We find that older Archean samples possess distinct isotopic signatures compared to you

Towards a theoretically informed policy against a rakghoul plague outbreak.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, the Sith Lord Karness Muur engineered the rakghoul plague, a disease that transformed infected humans into near-mindless predatory rakghouls. At its peak, the disease infected millions of individuals, giving rise to armies of rakghouls on a number of planets. Whether rakghoul populations have persisted until this day is not known, making a rakghoul invasion on Earth not completely improbable. Further, a strategy for defence against an outbreak of the disease on Earth has not yet been proposed. To fill this glaring gap, we developed the first mathemati

[Self-immolation as an effort of self-rescue during a psychotic episode].

Self-immolation as reported in the literature usually happens in the context of suicide acts or political martyrdom. We report a case in which a patient during a first psychotic episode attempted to immolate herself: she covered her legs with pieces of clothing and set them a fire. Severe burning made amputation of both her legs necessary, one above, one below the knee. The patient had not acted in this way in order to die, but to save herself from the impending end of the world. She was convinced the earth was going to explode, and she would only be able to flee to Venus by self-immolation. S

Plasma wave observations from Juno spacecraft at the Jovian bow shock.

Recent observations of Jupiter's bow shock have provided new insights into the energy dissipation mechanisms associated with bow shocks of outer planets. At greater distances from the Sun, the typically increasing super-Alfvénic nature of the solar wind leads to higher-energy bow shocks with enhanced dissipation requirements. Research on Earth's bow shock suggests that plasma waves (e.g., ion-acoustic waves, waves driven by the electron cyclotron drift instability, electrostatic solitary waves, and whistler mode waves) play a critical role in converting solar wind bulk kinetic energy into ther

[Weltanschauung aspects of the problem of man, the biosphere and space].

The paper discusses philosophic approaches to the problem of man-environment interplay. Many important problems humanity faces today are associated with biology. Biomedical and astrophysical studies are being carried out to gain a better insight into the laws governing evolution and further development of the Universe. The emergence of a human society started a qualitatively new stage in the evolution of organic matter. A rapid progress of science and engineering is accompanied by a significant rearrangement of the natural environment and, particularly, of living beings. The biosphere is trans

Getting ready for Mars: How the brain perceives new simulated gravitational environments.

On Earth, we are continually exposed to gravity: sensory signals are constantly integrated to form an internal model of gravity. However, it is unclear whether this internal model is fixed to Earth's gravity or whether it can be applied to a new gravitational environment. Under terrestrial gravity, observers show a "gravitational bias" while judging the speed of falling versus rising objects, as they comply with the physical laws of gravity. We investigated whether this gravitational bias may be present when judging the speed of objects moving upwards or downwards in both virtual reality (VR)-

Sleep and gravity.

What is known about sleep results from years of observation at the surface of the Earth. Since a few decade man has been able to reach space, escape from the earth attraction and spend days and nights in a weightless condition. Some major physiological changes have been observed during long stays and in particular the sleep duration in space is shorter than on ground. This paper reviews a novel hypothesis proposing that sleep is partly due to gravity. Gravity is a fundamental part of our environment, but is elusive and difficult to apprehend. At the same time, all creatures on Earth undergo cy

Prebiotic plausibility and networks of paradox-resolving independent models.

The plausibility of any model in science comes from the extent of its interconnections to other models that are grounded in different premises and reasoning. Focusing research on paradoxes in those models, logic whereby they appear to generate unacceptable conclusions from seemingly indisputable premises, helps find those interconnections.

Rethinking early Earth phosphorus geochemistry.

Phosphorus is a key biologic element, and a prebiotic pathway leading to its incorporation into biomolecules has been difficult to ascertain. Most potentially prebiotic phosphorylation reactions have relied on orthophosphate as the source of phosphorus. It is suggested here that the geochemistry of phosphorus on the early Earth was instead controlled by reduced oxidation state phosphorus compounds such as phosphite (HPO(3)(2-)), which are more soluble and reactive than orthophosphates. This reduced oxidation state phosphorus originated from extraterrestrial material that fell during the heavy

The reactions of methanimine and cyanogen with carbon monoxide in prebiotic molecular evolution on earth.

A primeval atmosphere is proposed containing simple molecules such as formaldehyde, ammonia, carbon monoxide, cyanogen and hydrogen cyanide, which have been detected in space. Chemical reactions are described for the formation of aziridine-2-one and di-azirine-3-one derivatives as potential precursors for the original synthesis of amino-acids, proteins, pyrimidines, purines, nicotinamide and flavin. The reactions have been shown to be kinetically feasible from the overall enthalpy changes in the ZKE approximation at the MP2/6-31G* level.

Bridging the weather and climate divide with artificial intelligence.

Weather and climate shape every aspect of our lives, yet for decades they have been studied as separate worlds-one concerned with what happens tomorrow, the other with what awaits us over the coming decades. This long-standing divide has slowed progress in both fields. Here, we argue that artificial intelligence (AI) is helping to dissolve the boundary between them. By learning directly from vast streams of Earth observations, AI is starting to predict both tomorrow's storm and next century's climate within a single, unified framework. We show how this convergence is already underway, why weat

Variations of the gravitational field as a motive power for rhythmics of biochemical processes.

Variations of the gravitational field affected by the Sun and the Moon while the Earth's moving along the orbit seem to be a powerful source of many rhythmical processes typical of biochemical processes. Studies carried out in AARI revealed the obvious relationships between the dynamics of some biochemical reactions and lambda(D)-function describing the regular variations of the gravitational field under combined influence of the Sun and the Moon. The following of them are examined as examples: the rate of the unithiol oxidation in vitro, concentration of the thiol compounds in human urine, so

A Proposal to Make Mars Sample Return a Collaborative NASA, ESA, and CNSA Effort.

Humanity's self-awareness drives the quest to understand the origins of life. Although Earth history has erased much of our planet's early biological evidence, Mars preserves ancient environments that may hold clues to life's emergence. Robotic explorations have confirmed that Mars once had liquid water and organic compounds, which suggests it was once habitable. However, definitive answers require analysis of pristine samples with advanced techniques in laboratories on Earth, which makes Mars Sample Return (MSR) missions a scientific imperative. NASA's Perseverance rover has begun caching sam

Microbes before microbiology: Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg and Berlin's infusoria.

Naturalist Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg pioneered research on living and fossil infusoria (including protists and bacteria) since the 1830s by collecting samples from all over the world, thus describing numerous microbes and discussing their effects for the planet and for humankind. This article introduces Ehrenberg as a natural historian of microbes and situates his work in the nineteenth century life sciences with respect to debates about cell theory, evolution, and concepts of disease. I argue that in spite of occurring before these major conceptual innovations of the life sciences, Ehrenb

Integrating planetary health into dentistry: an updated Montreal-Toulouse model.

The Earth has entered a critical phase, with seven of nine planetary boundaries already transgressed. This ecological catastrophe profoundly affects human health, highlighting the links between people's wellbeing and the state of the planet. Accordingly, health professionals are increasingly called to embrace planetary health and adopt sustainable practices. This is particularly relevant for dental clinics, which have a high ecological footprint and a responsibility to provide quality care that is both environmentally and socially sustainable. By integrating planetary health into practice, den
