What's eating you? chiggers.

Belonging to the Trombiculidae family of mites, chigger specifically refers to the larval stage of the mite's life cycle when it is able to bite its host. Although humans act as an accidental host, chiggers will latch on to the skin and their feeding process leads to localized inflammation and irritation. In most cases, these pruritic erythematous papules and papulovesicles are self-healing within a couple weeks, so only symptomatic relief is required as necessary by means of topical antipruritics, oral antihistamines, topical corticosteroids, or an intralesional triamcinolone acetonide inject

Sleep and Eating Disorders.

Insomnia is related to an increased risk of eating disorders, while eating disorders are related to more disrupted sleep. Insomnia is also linked to poorer treatment outcomes for eating disorders. However, over the last decade, studies examining sleep and eating disorders have relied on surveys, with no objective measures of sleep for anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, and only actigraphy data for binge eating disorder. Sleep disturbance is better defined for night eating syndrome, where sleep efficiency is reduced and melatonin release is delayed. Studies that include objectively measured s

[TMJ, eating and breathing].

The study of the relationship between temporomandibular joints (TMJ), mastication and ventilation and the involvement of these two functions in the genesis of primary Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and in some dentofacial deformities, was initiated in France, more than 30years, by Professor Raymond Gola. Once criticized the weakness of the scientific literature in this domain, the originality of the TMJ within the masticatory system is recalled with its huge adaptation potential to very different biomechanical constraints according to the age and masticatory activities during the day. But t

Eating disorders and bone.

Low bone mineral density (BMD) is a frequent and often-overlooked consequence of eating disorders, in particular anorexia nervosa and eating disorders associated with the female athlete triad. The causes of low BMD are multifactorial and include low peak bone mass accrual, accelerated bone resorption, and changes in bone microarchitecture. Early diagnosis and interventions focused on nutritional rehabilitation and weight gain reduce the risk of further BMD deficits and fractures.

Eating disorders during pregnancy.

UNLABELLED: Eating disorders during pregnancy, once thought to be rare, occur in a significant number of women. The incidences of the major eating disorders-anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa-are increasing because of cultural pressures on the drive for thinness. Because the age range for these major eating disorders overlaps with the age range for reproductive function, it is not unusual for a clinician to encounter a pregnant patient with a major eating disorder. Eating disorders attributable to the pregnant state include pregnancy sickness, pica, and ptyalism. The diagnostic criteria, eti

Loneliness and eating disorders.

This article examines the link between loneliness and eating disorders. This concept is evaluated through a systematic review of the literature that links loneliness and eating disorders and through a survey of themes connecting the 2 conditions. Eating disorders-including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and eating disorders that are not otherwise specified, which include binge eating disorder-are challenging health issues. Each of these diagnoses specifically relates to loneliness. This negative emotion contributes to and fuels eating disorder symptoms. Negative interpersonal relationships

Neurocircuity of eating disorders.

OBJECTIVES: This chapter reviews brain imaging findings in anorexia and bulimia nervosa which characterize brain circuitry that may contribute to the pathophysiology of eating disorders (EDs). SUMMARY OF RECENT FINDINGS: Recent imaging studies provide evidence of disturbed gustatory processing in EDs which involve the anterior insula as well as striatal regions. These results raise the possibility that individuals with anorexia nervosa have altered appetitive mechanism that may involve sensory, interoceptive, or reward processes. Furthermore, evidence of altered reward mechanisms is supported

Neuroimaging in eating disorders.

Neuroimaging techniques have been useful tools for accurate investigation of brain structure and function in eating disorders. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, single photon emission computed tomography, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and voxel-based morphometry have been the most relevant technologies in this regard. The purpose of this review is to update the existing data on neuroimaging in eating disorders. The main brain changes seem to be reversible to some extent after adequate weight restoration. Brain changes in bulimia nervosa seem to b

[When eating becomes dangerous...].

We report the case of a 59-year-old women with idiopathic insulin auto-immune syndrome, a rare cause of endogenous hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia. It is characterized by extremely high levels of insulin in the presence of high titers of insulin antibodies despite the absence of previous insulin injections. Early postprandial increase in glucose concentrations due to impaired insulin action resulting from the buffering effect of the antibodies and late postprandial hypoglycemia as a consequence of the dissociation of insulin from the antibodies was observed. A correct diagnosis is important to a

[Sleep related eating disorder].

Nighttime eating is categorized as either sleep-related eating disorder (SRED) or night eating syndrome (NES). Critical reviews of the literature on both disorders have suggested that they are situated at opposite poles of a disordered eating spectrum. The feeding behavior in SRED is characterized by recurrent episodes of eating after an arousal from nighttime sleep with amnesia. Conversely, NES could be considered as an abnormality in the circadian rhythm of meal timing with a normal circadian timing of sleep onset. Both conditions clearly concentrate to occur during young adulthood, and are

Eating disorders in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The overall prevalence of eating disorders among children and adolescents is rising - the younger age group are more likely to present with anorexia nervosa (AN), while the older adolescent can present with either AN or bulimia nervosa (BN). However, eating disorders exist as part of a spectrum and general practitioners will encounter many adolescents that have an eating disorder that do not yet fulfil diagnostic criteria for either AN or BN. OBJECTIVE: This article aims to provide an overview of assessment and principles of management of eating disorders in the adolescent patient

Sleep in eating disorders.

Sleep research on eating disorders has addressed two major questions: (1) the effects of chronic starvation in anorexia nervosa and of rapidly fluctuating eating patterns in bulimia nervosa on the sleep regulating processes and (2) the search for a significant neurobiological relationship between eating disorders and major depression. At present, the latter question appears to be resolved, since most of the available evidences clearly underline the notion that eating disorders (such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa) and affective disorders are two distinct entities. Regarding the effects of sta

Eating disorders: practical interventions.

The 4 currently recognized eating disorders are among the most common of psychiatric disorders to affect women in this country and are associated with chronic health impairments, although anorexia nervosa still carries a high mortality rate, including death by suicide. This review will focus primarily on the treatment of anorexia and bulimia nervosa and discuss interventions focused on engaging the patient, normalizing weight and nutritional status, changing dysfunctional attitudes and behaviors, and managing comorbid disorders such as major depression.

Neuropeptides in eating disorders.

The past decade has witnessed a dramatic acceleration in research on the role of the neuropeptides in the regulation of eating behavior and body weight homeostasis. This expanding research focus has been driven in part by increasing public health concerns related to obesity and the eating disorders anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Preclinical advances have been facilitated by the development of new molecular and behavioral research methodologies. With a focus on clinical investigations in AN and BN, this article reviews research on selected hypothalamic and gut-related peptide s

[Eating disorders--an overview].

This article gives an updated review of the history, epidemiology, etiology, and evidence-based treatment of eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder), with specific reference to the Norwegian situation. In order to improve clinical skills there is an emphasis on the need for more treatment resources, particularly for the most serious cases, better implementation of evidence-based treatment and on continuous medical education. Given the somatic manifestations of eating disorders, medical doctors are essential in assessment and treatment. Many patients can

Eating disorders in adolescents.

Eating disorders including anorexia nervosa and bulimia are commonly seen in adolescent patients. There are many medical complications including disturbances in cardiac, endocrine, bone, gastrointestinal, hematological, neurological, metabolic, and renal function. There are characteristic dermatological and dental findings. Attention to key elements of the history and characteristic findings on physical exam can help the primary care provider in timely diagnosis. Although there is a wide differential diagnosis for these patients, the presence of alteration in body image and fear of being overw

Subtyping binge eating disorder.

Cluster-analytic studies of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder (BED) have yielded 2 subtypes (pure dietary and mixed dietary-negative affect). The authors aimed to (a) replicate the subtyping with BED, (b) consider alternative approaches to subtyping, and (c) test the stability in individual differences in the subtyping. Cluster analyses of 101 patients revealed a dietary-negative affect subtype (33%) and a pure dietary subtype (67%). The dietary-negative affect subtype was characterized by greater eating-related psychopathology and psychological disturbance. Cluster analysis produced d

Osteoporosis and eating disorders.

Osteoporosis is a common complication of anorexia nervosa. Multiple factors increase risk, including decreased body weight and fat content, elevated cortisol levels, inadequate vitamin D and calcium intake, and amenorrhea and hypoestrogenemia. There is both decreased bone formation and increased bone resorption in the osteoporosis of anorexia nervosa. Treatment includes weight normalization and supplemental calcium and vitamin D. Unlike postmenopausal osteoporosis, estrogen replacement does not prevent or correct the osteoporosis that occurs in anorexia nervosa. Patients with bulimia nervosa o
