Artificial light has altered nighttime environments, jeopardizing the fitness of organisms. While many nocturnal animals avoid artificial light, the molecular mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain elusive. This study aimed to explore the behavioral and transcriptomic responses of least horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus pusillus) to artificial light. We manipulated three lighting conditions (i.e., dark control, white light, and green light) inside bat roost. We assessed behavioral responses and gene expressions in the adrenal gland-kidney complexes and brains of bats. Our analyses showed that whit

Nonpolar lipids and sound velocity at different distances from the skin surface within a sample of pilot whale melon were studied. Thin layer chromatography, sensitive radioisotopic methods, and an ultrasonic echo scanner were used. Wax esters had a maximum concentration at 11-12 cm from the skin surface. Non- and monoisovalero triglycerides both exhibited a minimum at 8-10 cm, whereas the diisovalero species increased steadily from the skin surface towards the center of the pilot whale head. A minimum of sound velocity, ca. 1340 m/s, was found at 9-11 cm, thus coinciding with a region rich in

BACKGROUND: Astrocytes, a type of glial cell in the brain, show remarkable morphological and functional diversity across mammalian species.
SUMMARY: This review explores astrocyte biology beyond the commonly studied rodent and primate models, focusing on nontraditional species to uncover evolutionary and adaptive features.
KEY MESSAGES: By examining astrocytes in marsupials, monotremes, chiropterans, artiodactyls, carnivorans, and cetaceans, we highlight species-specific variations in astrocyte morphology, distribution, and molecular markers. These adaptations are linked to ecological demand

The great evening bat (Ia io), a large frequency-modulating (FM) bat species in the Vespertilionidae family, may exhibit unique auditory adaptations that support its bird-predatory behavior. In this study, we employed auditory brainstem response (ABR) measurements to evaluate the auditory sensitivity of five adult male I. io across a 2 to 80 kHz frequency range. The results showed the most sensitive auditory threshold appears at 24-28 kHz (range 24 to 32 kHz for individual bats), aligning with the species' peak frequency of echolocation calls, enhancing large prey detection and localization. Understanding how the environment mediates an organism's ability to meet basic survival requirements is a fundamental goal of ecology. Vessel noise is a global threat to marine ecosystems and is increasing in intensity and spatiotemporal extent due to growth in shipping coupled with physical changes to ocean soundscapes from ocean warming and acidification. Odontocetes rely on biosonar to forage, yet determining the consequences of vessel noise on foraging has been limited by the challenges of observing underwater foraging outcomes and measuring noise levels received by individuals. Signal source intensity and detection range, which integrates source intensity with propagation loss, background noise and receiver hearing abilities, are important characteristics of communication signals. Apparent source levels were calculated for 819 pulsed calls and 24 whistles produced by free-ranging resident killer whales by triangulating the angles-of-arrival of sounds on two beamforming arrays towed in series. Levels in the 1-20 kHz band ranged from 131 to 168 dB re 1 microPa at 1 m, with differences in the means of different sound classes (whistles: 140.2+/-4.1 dB; variable calls: 14

The hearing thresholds of two adult manatees were measured using a forced-choice two alternative paradigm and an up/down staircase psychometric method. This is the first behavioral audiogram measured for any Sirenian, as well as the first underwater infrasonic psychometric test with a marine mammal. Auditory thresholds were obtained from 0.4 to 46 kHz, and detection thresholds of possible vibrotactile origin were measured at 0.015-0.2 kHz. The U-shaped audiogram demonstrates an upper limit of functional hearing at 46 kHz with peak frequency sensitivity at 16 and 18 kHz (50 dB re: 1 microPa). T

Sensory loss causes compensatory behavior, like echolocation upon vision loss or improved visual motion detection upon deafness. This is enabled by recruitment of the deprived cortical area by the intact senses. Such cross-modal plasticity can however hamper rehabilitation via sensory substitution devices. To steer rehabilitation towards the desired outcome for the patient, having control over the cross-modal take-over is essential. Evidence accumulates to support a role for the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in multimodal plasticity. This area shows increased activity after sensory loss, kee

Visual exploration in primates depends on saccadic eye movements (SEMs) that cause alternations of neural suppression and enhancement. This modulation extends beyond retinotopic areas, and is thought to facilitate perception; yet saccades may also influence brain regions critical for forming memories of these exploratory episodes. The hippocampus, for example, shows oscillatory activity that is generally associated with encoding of information. Whether or how hippocampal oscillations are influenced by eye movements is unknown. We recorded the neural activity in the human and macaque hippocampu

Quantifying and understanding the impact of anthropogenic sound on marine mammals has been the focus of many researchers both in laboratory settings as well as in the field. This study presents the audiogram of a sub-adult Blainville's beaked whale that stranded in Hawaii. The hearing measurements were conducted using the non-invasive auditory brainstem response technique. A total of 11 sinusoidally amplitude modulated tones were tested ranging from 5.6 to 160 kHz. The audiogram data indicated that the region of best hearing was found between 40 and 50 kHz with thresholds below 50 dB. This fre

Hearing loss is a hallmark of aging, typically initially affecting the higher frequencies. In echolocating bats, the ability to discern high frequencies is essential. However, nothing is known about age-related hearing loss in bats, and they are often assumed to be immune to it. We tested the hearing of 47 wild Egyptian fruit bats by recording their auditory brainstem response and cochlear microphonics, and we also assessed the cochlear histology in four of these bats. We used the bats' DNA methylation profile to evaluate their age and found that bats exhibit age-related hearing loss, with mor

Echolocation was accomplished by means of "Alok-650" echochamber (Japan) and 3.5 and 5 megahertz transducers. Twenty individuals of the control group and 40 patients who underwent operations on the extrahepatic bile ducts and the gallbladder through S. P. Fedorov's approach were examined. Morphometry was conducted of the linea alba, the broad abdominal muscles, and the rectus abdominis muscles on 5 levels in relaxation and tension of the prelum abdominale muscles. The size of the rectus abdominis muscles in the control group was found to be the same on both sides. Atrophy of the right rectus a

More difficult tasks are generally regarded as such because they demand greater attention. Echolocators provide rare insight into this relationship because biosonar signals can be monitored. Here we show that bats produce longer terminal buzzes and more sonar sound groups during their approach to prey under presumably more difficult conditions. Specifically, we found Daubenton's bats, Myotis daubentonii, produced longer buzzes when aerial-hawking versus water-trawling prey, but that bats taking revolving air- and water-borne prey produced more sonar sound groups than did the bats when taking s

The cetacean nose presents a unique suite of anatomical modifications. Key among these is posterior movement of the external nares from the tip of the rostrum to the top of the head. Concomitant with these anatomical changes are functional changes including the evolution of echolocation in odontocetes, and reduction of olfaction in Neoceti (crown odontocetes and mysticetes). Anatomical and embryological development of the nose in crown cetaceans is reviewed as well as their functional implications. A sequence of evolutionary transformations of the nose is proposed in the transition from a terr

Reports of fingertip regrowth in children are interpreted in the perspective of epimorphic regeneration in lower forms and in relation to a few other examples in mammals. The latter include cases of antler replacement in deer as well as ingrowth from the margins of holes cut in bat wing membranes and in the external ears of rabbits, pikas, cats, and echolocating bats. It is suggested that the relative inadequacy of regeneration in warm-blooded vertebrates may be attributed to the precocity with which they tend to form dermal scars in healing wounds, scars that are believed to preclude blastema

Bats achieve agile navigation, including obstacle avoidance and prey pursuit in complex environments, using a remarkably simple active sonar system consisting of a single sound emitter and two receivers. Their biosonar highlights the potential of broadband FM pulses in simple sensing architectures. Here, we present a bat-inspired FM sonar system for drones, employing a single ultrasonic transmitter and two receivers. The system integrates a lightweight thermoacoustic emitter (thermophone) capable of generating broadband frequency-modulated (FM) pulses, including echolocation-like signals. Owin

Wind turbines intersect airspace used by both migratory birds and bats, yet most monitoring approaches rely on single sensing modalities that capture only part of this system. Here, we integrate synchronized three-dimensional (3-D) thermal videography, ultrasonic acoustic monitoring, and regional weather radar data to characterize wildlife activity at two inland wind turbines during fall migration in Iowa, USA. Across 38 nights in late summer and autumn of 2022, we recorded 12,047 3-D flight tracks within rotor-swept altitudes, 2,249 bat echolocation sequences, and cumulative radar-derived mig

The nasal epithelia of two species of bats were quantified with respect to relative surface areas and olfactory epithelial volumes. In the macrosmatic Aribeus jamaicensis 55.9% of the nasal cavity surface was covered by olfactory epithelium (232.4 mm2), in contrast to only 28.9% in the microsmatic Myotis lucifugus (36.4 mm2). The roles of the various nasal epithelia have been discussed as they may relate to olfaction, respiration and echolocation. In the olfactory bulbs of both species, the estimated concentration of mitral cells approximated at 2,500/mm2 compared to an olfactory nerve concent

We studied the development of hearing in newborn pups of the big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus. In the majority of pups, the opening of both outer auditory canals occurred on or before postnatal day (PND) 7, but in some, it extended to PND 11. Using repeated auditory brainstem response (ABR) recordings, we tracked the progressive development and maturation of auditory sensitivity in 22 E. fuscus pups every 3 days, from PND 10 to PND 31, with additional recordings in a subset of bats at 2 months, 3 months and 1 year of life. There was a profound increase in auditory sensitivity across development

The auditory brainstem response to a dolphin's own emitted biosonar click can be measured by averaging epochs of the instantaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) that are time-locked to the emitted click. In this study, averaged EEGs were measured using surface electrodes placed on the head in six different configurations while dolphins performed an echolocation task. Simultaneously, biosonar click emissions were measured using contact hydrophones on the melon and a hydrophone in the farfield. The averaged EEGs revealed an electrophysiological potential (the pre-auditory wave, PAW) that preceded t
