Qualitative Research as a Basis for Transforming an Annual Plague Into an Economic and Nutrition Opportunity for Youths and Their Families in Madagascar: "From Harmful to Useful Critters" for Sustainable Development.

BACKGROUND: Madagascar is among the 10 highest burden countries for malnutrition. Protein-energy malnutrition, anemia, and vitamin deficiencies are major public health problems. Hunger is exacerbated by an annual locust invasion. The current policy of large-scale government spraying of pesticides from planes is logistically complex, costly, and damaging to the environment. OBJECTIVE: Our research aimed to study the feasibility of turning the locust invasion into a protein-rich food supply for families and an economic opportunity for youth. METHODS: We conducted 20 focus group discussions (FG

Clinical Usage and Economic Effectiveness of a Recently Developed Epidermal Autograft Harvesting System in 13 Chronic Wound Patients in a University-Based Wound Center.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic wounds are a significant healthcare problem in the United States. Their costs approach 25 billion dollars in the United States. Current wound-care treatments of local wound care, moist dressings, and source control, while necessary for wound healing, are frequently not enough to ensure complete wound closure. The current surgical technique of split-thickness skin grafting is an operative procedure, painful, time-consuming, and leaves significant donor site wounds. A recently developed and marketed epidermal autograft harvester was tested at our university hospital wound c

Updating CMV protocols in lung transplant patients: a single-center case study modeling use of generative AI for antimicrobial stewardship protocol development and economic impact analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) need healthcare economic analyses to support and inform ASP strategies. This work aimed to determine whether widely available artificial intelligence (AI) platforms like Microsoft CopilotTM could facilitate healthcare economics analyses for ASP programs without dedicated healthcare economic supports. DESIGN: AI (Microsoft CopilotTM) was prompted to develop a cytomegalovirus prophylaxis protocol for lung transplant recipients using only PubMed-indexed articles. CopilotTM was then prompted to produce probabilistic samples of simulated patient

Developing a framework for identifying risk factors and estimating direct economic disease burden attributable to healthcare-associated infections: a case study of a Chinese Tuberculosis hospital.

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) represent a major global health burden, which necessitate effective frameworks to identify potential risk factors and estimate the corresponding direct economic disease burden. In this article, we proposed a framework designed to address these needs through a case study conducted in a Tuberculosis (TB) hospital in Hubei Province, China, using data from 2018 to 2019. A comprehensive multistep procedure was developed, including ethical application, participant inclusion, risk factor identification, and direct economic disease burden estimation. In the case

Improving health and housing outcomes through a simulation and economic model: an evidence-based protocol of a group model building approach to develop an agent-based model.

INTRODUCTION: Homelessness in the United States increased every year since 2016, with a 38% increase from 2023 to 2024. Much of the increase is attributable to rising home and rent costs, economic hardship caused by the recent pandemic, and the ending of protective legislation. Notably, people who experience homelessness have an increased risk of substance use disorders, HIV infection and poorer HIV outcomes than people who are stably housed. The iHouse model aims to develop feasible, effective, and cost-effective tailored approaches to improve health outcomes in this population including life

Development of Rapid and Economical Colorimetric Screening Method for p-Phenylenediamine in Variety of Biological Matrices and its Application to Eleven Fatal Cases of p-Phenylenediamine Poisoning.

A rapid colorimetric method for detection of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) in various biological samples is developed. The o-cresol test for acetaminophen detection has been modified to detect PPD in blood, urine, gastric contents, and liver. After precipitating protein with trichloroacetic acid solution (2 mL, 10% w/v), biological specimens were required to convert PPD metabolites to PPD by acid hydrolysis. Finally, o-cresol solution (1 mL, 1% w/v), hydrogen peroxide (200 μL, 3%v/v), and concentrated ammonium hydroxide (0.5 mL) were added in the biological samples. The presence of PPD was indicate

System-Wide Use of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Countries: Insights From a Health Policy Survey and Key Informant Workshops.

OBJECTIVES: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can systematically integrate the patient perspective to enhance value-based, people-centered healthcare. This study aims to assess the current systematic use of PROMs data across OECD countries and identify barriers and enablers for system-wide implementation from decision-makers' perspectives. METHODS: A cross-sectional country-level survey was conducted among country officials from 38 OECD member and accession countries and key partners. Two researchers independently coded survey responses. Analysis of barriers and enablers to implementa

Gender-related differences in health-care and economic costs for eating disorders: A comparative cost-development analysis for anorexia and bulimia nervosa based on anonymized claims data.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) impose a significant financial burden and immense sufferings on affected individuals. Yet little is known about the differences between how each disorder affects males and females, respectively. METHOD: We performed a retrospective cost-development analysis of anonymized claims data from the German statutory health-insurance system. Insured persons who suffered from an onset of AN (F50.0; N = 1,242 females and 71 males) or BN (F50.2; N = 1,104 females and 64 males) were analyzed for cost-of-illness over a 5-year period, beginning 2 yea

The development of preterm infants from low socio-economic status families: The combined effects of melatonin, autonomic nervous system maturation and psychosocial factors (ProMote): A study protocol.

Preterm births constitute a major public health issue and a chronic, cross-generational condition globally. Psychological and biological factors interact in a way that women from low socio-economic status (SES) are disproportionally affected by preterm delivery and at increased risk for the development of perinatal mental health problems. Low SES constitutes one of the most evident contributors to poor neurodevelopment of preterm infants. Maternal perinatal mental health disorders have persistent effects on behavioral and physiological functioning throughout the lifespan and may even be eviden

Development of an enhanced health-economic model and cost-effectiveness analysis of tiotropium + olodaterol Respimat® fixed-dose combination for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients in Italy.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to compare the cost-effectiveness of the fixed-dose combination (FDC) of tiotropium + olodaterol Respimat(®) FDC with tiotropium alone for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the Italian health care setting using a newly developed patient-level Markov model that reflects the current understanding of the disease. METHODS: While previously published models have largely been based around a cohort approach using a Markov structure and GOLD stage stratification, an individual-level Markov approach was selected for the new model.

Manifestations and Impacts of Racial Aggressions on Black Individuals' Health and Well-Being in University Settings Across Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Countries: Protocol for an Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND: The number of international migrants continues to rise globally, particularly in countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This growing diversity presents sociopolitical challenges related to social cohesion, which are also reflected in academic settings. Some individuals are exposed to different forms of discrimination based on skin color, including both racial microaggressions and macroaggressions. Racism is a major determinant of health and has deleterious effects on those exposed to it. OBJECTIVE: This protocol aims to analyze and

Economic impact of extended time on peritoneal dialysis as a result of using polyglucose: the application of a Markov chain model to forecast changes in the development of the ESRD programme over time.

BACKGROUND: The use of polyglucose as a peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluid extends time on PD treatment. It is anticipated, therefore, that the share of patients treated with PD will be positively influenced. The relationship between extension of PD treatment time and an increase of the PD treatment share, however, is complex and needs further investigation. In this paper, a Markov chain model was applied to investigate the impact of extended time on PD treatment for the PD share in all dialysis patients in The Netherlands. Furthermore, the economic impact of the extended time on treatment (ETOT)

Development, acceptability and feasibility of a community-based intervention to increase timely initiation of antenatal care in an area of high ethnic diversity and low socio-economic status in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal care plays an important role in preventing adverse maternal and new-born outcomes. Women from ethnic minority backgrounds and of low socio-economic status are at greater risk of initiating antenatal care later than the recommended 10 weeks. There is a paucity of research exploring the development and evaluation of community-based interventions to increase the timely initiation of antenatal care. OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of a co-produced community-based intervention to increase uptake of antenatal care in an area with high ethni

A systematic review of the complications of high-risk third molar removal and coronectomy: development of a decision tree model and preliminary health economic analysis to assist in treatment planning.

Coronectomy is an alternative surgical technique for the management of high-risk third molars. It involves the removal of the crown of a tooth and the deliberate retention of the roots, thereby avoiding injury to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). Previous studies have suggested that it reduces the risk of nerve injury when compared with surgical extraction. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the incidence of complications following coronectomy such as IAN injury, pain, dry socket, infection, root migration, and need for re-operation. A comparative cost analysis of coronect

Use of colistin-containing products within the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA): development of resistance in animals and possible impact on human and animal health.

Since its introduction in the 1950s, colistin has been used mainly as a topical treatment in human medicine owing to its toxicity when given systemically. Sixty years later, colistin is being used as a last-resort drug to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Enterobacteriaceae (e.g., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae), for which mortality can be high. In veterinary medicine, colistin has been used for decades for the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. Colistin has been administered frequently as a group tre

Global variation in the prevalence of elevated cholesterol in outpatients with established vascular disease or 3 cardiovascular risk factors according to national indices of economic development and health system performance.

BACKGROUND: Elevated serum cholesterol accounts for a considerable proportion of cardiovascular disease worldwide. An understanding of the relationship between country-level economic and health system factors and elevated cholesterol may provide insight for prioritization of cardiovascular prevention programs. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using hierarchical models, we examined the relationship between elevated total cholesterol (>200 mg/dL) in 53 570 outpatients from 36 countries, and tertiles of several country-level indices: (1) gross national income, (2) total expenditure on health as percentage o
