The effect of landfill leachate treatment on ecotoxicological properties of Folsomia candida, with a focus on soil contamination risks.

Landfilling is a common method for managing solid waste, but it generates leachate, a highly contaminated liquid that can threaten groundwater, surface water, and soil health. This study examines how raw and treated landfill leachate affects the survival and reproduction of Folsomia candida, a soil-dwelling Collembola species. Leachate treatment was conducted using Vegetation-activated sludge process with different fill materials (zeolite, biochar) and plant variations. The study also explored the relationship between leachate toxicity and its chemical properties to determine key contaminants

Occurrence of selected antibiotics in urban rivers in northwest Pakistan and assessment of ecotoxicological and antimicrobial resistance risks.

Antibiotics in aquatic systems of developing countries are a growing concern, particularly with the potential ecological risks and emergence of antimicrobial resistance. In Pakistan, antibiotics are widely consumed and released untreated into rivers, however, there is little information on their occurrence and potential risks. In this study, the concentrations and risk assessment of three commonly consumed antibiotics, ciprofloxacin (CIP), amoxicillin (AMX), and cefixime (CFM) belonging to different classes of fluoroquinolone, penicillin, and cephalosporin respectively were investigated in the

Ecotoxicological effects, human and animal health risks of pollution and exposure to waste engine oils: a review.

Waste engine oils are hazardous waste oils originating from the transportation sector and industrial heavy-duty machinery operations. Improper handling, disposal, and miscellaneous misuses cause significant air, soil, sediments, surface water, and groundwater pollution. Occupational exposure by prolonged and repeated contact poses direct or indirect health risks, resulting in short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic) toxicities. Soil pollution causes geotoxicity by disrupting the biocenosis and physicochemical properties of the soil, and phytotoxicity by impairing plant growth, physiology and

Historical trends of the ecotoxicological pesticide risk from the main grain crops in Rolling Pampa (Argentina).

We showed the results of the first long-term analysis (1987-2019) of pesticide (herbicides, fungicides and insecticides) impact in the Rolling Pampa, one of the main agricultural areas of Argentina. Using a clear and meaningful tool, based not only on acute toxicity but also on scaling up the results to total sown area, we identified time trends for both pesticide impact and the ecoefficiency of modal pesticide profiles. By the end of the time series, soybean showed a pesticide impact four times greater than maize crop in the studied area. However, the time trend in the subperiod (2012-2019) s

An ecotoxicological study on tin- and bismuth-catalysed PDMS based coatings containing a surface-active polymer.

Novel films were prepared by condensation curing reaction of a poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) matrix with bismuth neodecanoate and dibutyltin diacetate catalysts. An ecotoxicological study was performed on the leachates of the coatings using the bacterium Vibrio fischeri, the unicellular alga Dunaliella tertiolecta, the crustacean Artemia salina and the fish Sparus aurata (larvae) as testing organisms. A copper-based self-polishing commercial paint was also tested as reference. The results showed that the tin-catalysed coatings and the copper paint were highly toxic against at least two of the

Method development for aquatic ecotoxicological characterization factor calculation for hydrocarbon mixtures in life cycle assessment.

Most pollutants are released into the environment in the presence of other contaminants, creating complex mixtures. In life-cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods, characterization factors (CFs) are used to obtain the potential impacts associated with each contaminant emission. Current LCIA methods do not include CFs to evaluate the potential impacts of complex organic mixtures on ecosystems. This study explores the possibility of developing new CFs for petroleum mixtures. Petroleum products are an example of mixtures whose constituents have a common toxic mode of action: the narcosis effect.

Comparison of solid-phase and eluate assays to gauge the ecotoxicological risk of organic wastes on soil organisms.

Development of methodologies to assess the safety of reusing polluted organic wastes in soil is a priority in Europe. In this study, and coupled with chemical analysis, seven organic wastes were subjected to different aquatic and soil bioassays. Tests were carried out with solid-phase waste and three different waste eluates (water, methanol, and dichloromethane). Solid-phase assays were indicated as the most suitable for waste testing not only in terms of relevance for real situations, but also because toxicity in eluates was generally not representative of the chronic effects in solid-phase.

Uncertainty in msPAF-based ecotoxicological effect factors for freshwater ecosystems in life cycle impact assessment.

Ecotoxicological effect factors are part of the analysis of relative impacts by chemical contaminants on ecosystems. Uncertainty distributions, represented by the 90% confidence interval, belonging to ecotoxicological effect factors for freshwater ecosystems were determined. This study includes 869 high production volume chemicals, related to 7 nonspecific toxic modes of action (TMoAs). The ecotoxicological effect factors are divided into a TMoA-specific part and a chemical-specific part. The 90% confidence interval of the TMoA-specific part of the effect factor ranges from 23 orders of magnit

Ecotoxicological evaluation of sodium fluoroacetate on aquatic organisms and investigation of the effects on two fish cell lines.

Sodium monofluoroacetate (compound 1080) is one of the most potent pesticides. It is also a metabolite of many other fluorinated compounds, including anticancer agents, narcotic analgesics, pesticides or industrial chemicals. Other sources of water contamination are the atmospheric degradation of hydrofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons. However, there is little information available about the adverse effects of sodium fluoroacetate in aquatic organisms. Firstly, the bacterium Vibrio fischeri (decomposer), the alga Chlorella vulgaris (1st producer) and the cladoceran Daphnia magna (1st

Integrating Empirical Ecotoxicology and Predictive Modelling to Assess Ecological and Human Health Risks from Heavy Metals in Malaysia's Chini Lake UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Chini Lake, Malaysia's first UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve, exemplifies the growing challenge of safeguarding freshwater ecosystems exposed to legacy mining activities and ongoing land-use disturbance. Mining and other anthropogenic activities have contributed to persistent heavy metal contamination in freshwater ecosystems, underscoring the need for robust and reliable risk assessment frameworks to inform conservation and policy. This study applies an integrated approach combining empirical (ECOTOX) and predictive (ECOSAR) toxicity data to evaluate ecological and human health risks acro

Comparative ecotoxicological assessment of nano-formulated and conventional copper-based pesticides on the freshwater snail Planorbarius corneus.

Copper (Cu) is extensively used in agriculture, yet its environmental accumulation raises significant ecotoxicological concerns. Nano-formulations have been developed as alternatives allowing to decrease Cu application rates, but their effects on non-target species remain poorly understood, particularly in aquatic ecosystems. This study evaluated the ecotoxic potential of the commercial copper-based nanopesticide, Kocide 3000® in comparison with the conventional formulation Kocide 2000®, using the freshwater gastropod Planorbarius corneus as a model species. A copper salt was also included as

Pharmaceutical mixtures in urban wastewater: integrating occurrence and ecotoxicological potency for prioritization, informed by co-occurrence structure.

Pharmaceutical mixtures are pervasive contaminants in urban wastewater, yet prioritization strategies still rely predominantly on single-substance approaches that neglect mixture structure and the population scale of emission sources. Here, we propose the Index of Community Exposure to Pharmaceuticals in Effluents (iCEPE), a composite prioritization framework integrating occurrence frequency, population exposure, ecotoxicological potency, and pharmaceutical co-occurrence networks. The framework was applied to 61 sampling events collected across six wastewater monitoring units (five WWTPs and o

Ecotoxicological effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products on the microbiome and oxidative stress of freshwater crayfish Faxonius obscurus.

The ecotoxicity of individual pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in freshwaters is well documented. However, their combined effects as mixtures on aquatic animals and their associated microbiomes remain poorly understood. This study examined the response of freshwater crayfish, Faxonius obscurus, to a mixture of three frequently co-occurring PPCPs, i.e., carbamazepine, estradiol, and triclosan, at environmentally relevant concentrations (10 or 100 μg/L). Our results revealed dose-dependent disruptions of crayfish microbiomes across multiple body locations upon a 96-hr PPCP expo

Ecotoxicological effects of deep-sea sediments from polymetallic nodule fields in the marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Deep-sea mining (DSM) has the potential to become the next global scale extractive industry. Besides directly removing habitat in the area where the ores will be collected, DSM activities in the deep seafloor are likely to cause a plume of sediments. This sediments plume may also affect the fauna in the surrounding areas of the mining site. In this context, this work assesses the ecotoxicological effects of deep-sea sediments from polymetallic nodule fields, collected in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), Pacific Ocean, in the coastal mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Mussels were exposed for

Redox-driven mechanisms link pesticide-induced microglial immunotoxicity to neurobehavioural impairment in an invertebrate ecotoxicological model.

This study aimed to compare the biological consequences of mitochondrial- versus cytoplasmic-driven superoxide dysregulation, with a focus on microglial immunotoxicity and neurobehavioural outcomes. Murine BV-2 microglial cells were exposed to sublethal concentrations of rotenone (ROT) or paraquat (PQT) to assess cytotoxicity, redox imbalance, mitochondrial alterations, oxidative macromolecular damage, inflammatory modulation, and cytomorphological alterations. In parallel, acute toxicity and neurobehavioural responses were evaluated in the invertebrate model Eisenia fetida. Both pesticides re

Ecotoxicological insights into UV-P-induced immunotoxicity and bacterial infection risk in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma).

Benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVs) are widespread and bioaccumulative aquatic contaminants. However, their immunotoxicity and underlying molecular mechanisms remain largely unexplored. In this study, we measured the concentrations of ten BUVs in the East China Sea and selected UV-P for further study based on its highest detected concentration. Consequently, marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) were exposed to an environmentally relevant concentration (3.5 μg/L) and two elevated concentrations (35 and 350 μg/L) of UV-P for 28 days. Immunological parameters, histopathological alterations
