We report two cases of pentalogy of Cantrell diagnosed in utero using a combination of fetal echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging. The cardiac component consisted of tetralogy of Fallot in the first fetus and ventricular septal defect in the second fetus. Whereas fetal echocardiography allowed accurate delineation of the cardiac anatomy, prenatal magnetic resonance imaging allowed clearer delineation of the extent of the thoracic and abdominal wall defects. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging in conjunction with prenatal echocardiography allows optimal assessment of the fetus with ecto

Two patients with incomplete pentalogy of Cantrell are described. The first was a girl with a large omphalocele with evisceration of the heart, liver and intestines with an intact sternum. Echocardiography showed profound intracardiac defects. The girl died 33 h after birth. The second patient was a female fetus with ectopia cordis (EC) without intracardiac anomalies; a large omphalocele with evisceration of the heart, stomach, spleen and liver; a hypoplastic sternum and rib cage; and a scoliosis. The pregnancy was terminated. A review of patients described in the literature is presented with

Cantrell's pentalogy is a congenital anomaly resulting from embryologic development defect. The anomalies observed in this disorder were: (1) a midline, supraumbilical abdominal wall defect, (2) a defect of the lower sternum, (3) a deficiency of the anterior diaphragm, (4) a defect in the diaphragmatic pericardium, (5) congenital intracardiac defects. Its occurrence in the newborn is quite uncommon, though it was first described by Cantrell and his colleagues in 1958. A one-day-old male fullterm newborn was presented. Omphalocele and partial ectopia cordis were noted immediately after birth. E

Congenital anomalies on some viscera like heart, liver and kidney have been investigated in chick embryos after a single injection of dilantin (3 mg/egg), a known antiepileptic drug, on 4th day of incubation. On 19th day of incubation, chick embryos were collected to observe the gross malformations and histological changes in heart, liver and kidney. On gross examination, visceroptosis (29%), thin anterior abdominal wall (28%), ectopia cordis (10%) and dextrocardia (1%) were observed. Histological examination of the kidney revealed glomerular degeneration in kidney while in liver, dilated cent

Sternal cleft is a rare congenital deformity, with a superior cleft being the most common. Although sternal clefting is known to be associated with vascular dysplasia, to our knowledge, we report the first case of superior sternal cleft with cervicofacial hemangiomata and cardiac defects in the absence of true ectopia cordis in a neonate. Early surgery in all cases of sternal clefting is advocated, preferably within the first 4 weeks of life. However, if the child is unfit for operation at this stage, repair should be carried out as soon as the child is stable and fit. The method of choice is

Pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by a spectrum of midline thoracoabdominal defects involving the abdominal wall, sternum, diaphragm, pericardium, and heart. We report a case of a 32-year-old primigravida diagnosed during a routine second-trimester anomaly scan with a fetus demonstrating a large supraumbilical abdominal wall defect with herniated viscera, ectopia cordis, and associated diaphragmatic and sternal defects. Additional findings included cystic hygroma and kyphoscoliosis. The constellation of findings fulfilled Toyama Class I criteria for complete pent

A four-vessel umbilical cord is a rare anomaly that can occur with abnormal persistence of the caudal portion of the vessel. Although supernumerary vessels can present as an isolated finding, they are known to be associated with multiple significant congenital anomalies. Ectopia cordis, pulmonary stenosis, cleft lip, cleft palate, situs inversus, tetralogy of Fallot, and gastroschisis are some anomalies associated with four-vessel cords. This is a case of a 22-year-old multigravida with a four-vessel umbilical cord initially found on sonography. The patient was sent to Maternal Fetal Medicine

In this report, we describe 3 cases of pentalogy of Cantrell diagnosed prenatally with sonography. All 3 fetuses had an omphalocele and ectopia cordis; 2 of them also had craniorachischisis, in which the open cranial defect (anencephaly or exencephaly) is continuous with the completely open spine (spinal dysraphism). The association of the pentalogy of Cantrell with exencephaly is rare, and to our knowledge, the association of this syndrome with craniorachischisis has not been reported previously. In addition, 2 of our cases had clubfoot, and 1 of them also had clubhand, neither of which has b

Midline defects account for approximately 5% of congenital abnormalities observed at birth. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the formation of the ventral body wall are not well understood. Recent studies linked mutations in Porcupine-an O-acetyl transferase mediating Wnt ligand acylation-with defects in the thoracic body wall. We hypothesized that anomalous Wnt signaling is involved in the pathogenesis of defective closure of the thoracic body wall. We generated a mouse model wherein Wntless (Wls), which encodes a cargo receptor mediating secretion of Wnt ligands, was conditionally

Cantrell's pentalogy (CP) is a rare syndrome characterized by defects in the lower sternum with ectopia cordis, anterior diaphragm defects, midline supraumbilical abdominal wall defects, defects in the diaphragmatic pericardium, and congenital heart disease. The authors report a 12-weeks gestation with multiple fetal anomalies suggesting the diagnosis of CP (a large thoraco-abdominal defect with herniating liver and bowel, heart deviated anteriorly with concomitant ventricular septal defect), and the 'S' shaped fetal spine due to increased lumbar lordosis and scoliosis with accompanying pes eq

Pentalogy of Cantrell (PC) is a rare congenital disorder that presents with several midline defects including the abdominal wall, sternum, diaphragm, pericardium, and heart. Surgical intervention for omphaloceles and cardiac defects typically occur in infancy, but the optimal surgical repair for thoracoabdominal wall defects varies by patient. We present a 15-year-old female with PC, who underwent previous omphalocele, diaphragm, and cardiac repair as an infant, with recurrent ventral and diaphragmatic defects as well as a large sternal cleft with ectopia cordis. This case demonstrates the fea

Limb body wall complex (LBWC) is a rare, lethal malformation characterised by body wall defects, craniofacial and limb anomalies with or without various other organ anomalies. We report a case of dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy discordant for LBWC, diagnosed by ultrasound (US) and confirmed by MRI at 21 weeks' gestation, managed expectantly and delivered at 35 weeks by emergency caesarean section with a favourable outcome of the unaffected twin. The anomalous twin, who died soon after birth, had a sizeable thoracoabdominal wall defect, eviscerated liver and bowel loops attached to the pl

Since MAYOR and CANTRELL described in 1953 and in 1958 the ectopia cordis associated to other four anomalies, few cases have been reported, and only a small part of them have survived. We report the case of a neonate who presented with the features of the pentalogy. On the 3rd day we found at operation the heart laying over the left hepatic lobe, no pericardium could be identified and diaphragm was absent at its anterior edge. We made an "isolating sac" with duramadre fixed to the anterior thoracic wall, to both sides and to the posterior diaphragmatic defect. The initial management of the ven

A wide range of congenital chest wall deformities have been described over the years. The spectrum of severity may range from life threatening deformities such as cordis ectopia to those which pose functional limitations as growth and maturity approach adulthood. Until recently, pectus excavatum (PE) and carinatum(PC) malformations have generally been considered as primarily cosmetic abnormalities. "Open" surgical procedures to correct PE and PC involved extensive resection of cartilage and bone to remove the bony deformity often with lasting growth restriction of the chest wall. Minimally inv

Pentalogy of Cantrell is a rare syndrome of anomalous malformation. In the present case, the syndrome was initially diagnosed as a complete pentad, including a supra-umbilical abdominal wall defect, a sternal defect, pericardial defects, an anterior diaphragmatic defect, and heart malformation. Diagnosis required several imaging modalities, including computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this case report, we present an 8-month-old female patient with a thoracic wall defect with ectopia cordis and a bilateral cleft lip and palate. In addition, a head CT scan showed c

The teratogenic activity of the antitumor agent cisplatinum-2-thymine (platinum thymine blue) was investigated in rats. Pregnant Wistar-derived albino rats were given single ip injections of an aqueous solution of platinum thymine blue (PTB) at one day of pregnancy from day 5 through day 14 (sperm day=day 0). The dosages used ranged from 20 to 80 mg/kg maternal body weight. At autopsy (day 20) fetuses were recovered and subsequently examined for skeletal and soft-tissue abnormalities. PTB was embryolethal and teratogenic at several stages during rat gestation. Embryonic death occurred followin

During the 3rd and 4th weeks post-fertilization (5 and 6 weeks from the last normal menstrual period [LNMP]), the human embryo is transformed from a flat disc-shaped organism into the classic shape of an embryo in the "fetal" position. This change is effected by simultaneously rolling the top layer of the disc, the ectoderm, into the neural tube and the bottom layers of the disc, the endoderm and mesoderm, into the gut tube and body wall, respectively. In this manner, the flat disc is transformed into two tubes, one dorsal to the other, surrounded by supporting structures in the body wall. If

BACKGROUND: Repairing body wall defects is a critical step in the treatment of some congenital deformities, and this procedure may need the help from plastic surgeons. Although there are many articles about congenital deformities, body wall defects of these malformations are rarely studied as independent targets.
METHODS: In this article, the authors present an LDT classification for congenital body wall defects according to the position of the defects, the tissue layers involved, and the surgical urgency, each of which is represented by letters L, D, and T, respectively. That is, the defects

Ventral body wall defects (VBWDs) are one of the main categories of human congenital malformations, representing a wide and heterogeneous group of defects sharing a common feature, that is, herniation of one or more viscera through a defect in the anterior body wall. Gastroschisis and omphalocele are the 2 most common congenital VBWDs. Other uncommon anomalies include ectopia cordis and pentalogy of Cantrell, limb-body wall complex, and bladder and cloacal exstrophy. Although VBWDs are associated with multiple abnormalities with distinct embryological origins and that may affect virtually any
