Changes in the gills of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) after chronic exposure to environmental cocaine concentration.

The recent discovery of illicit drugs in the aquatic environment has raised concerns about the possible effects on the aquatic fauna, because of the pharmacological activity of these substances. Cocaine is an illicit drug widespread in surface waters since it is the third most widely used drug in North America, Western and Central Europe, and the second in Latin America and the Caribbean. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental concentrations of cocaine on the gills of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). The gills of male silver eels exposed to 20 ng L-1 of cocai

Influence of bacteriophages cocktail on European eel (Anguilla anguilla) immunity and survival after experimental challenge.

Inland fishery belongs to those branches of animal production that use very large amounts of chemotherapeutics, in particular antibiotics. The accumulation of chemotherapeutic agents in bottom sediments is a direct threat to the aquatic environment and directly affects the condition and health of the fish. Finding a preparation that could be used both prophylactically to increase the resistance of fish and therapeutically in case of infection with pathogenic bacteria, without side effects for fish and aquatic environment could be a great solution to this problem. Our aim was to determine influ

The regulation of aromatase and androgen receptor expression during gonad development in male and female European eel.

This research investigated the regulation of aromatase and androgen receptor gene expression in the brain-pituitary-gonad (BPG) axis of male and female European eels (Anguilla anguilla) during induced sexual maturation. Complete A. anguilla aromatase (aa-cyp19a1) and partial androgen receptor α and β (aa-ara and aa-arb) sequences were isolated, and qPCR assays were validated and used for quantification of transcript levels for these three genes. Expression levels of the genes varied with sex, tissue and stage of maturation. aa-arb was expressed at higher levels than aa-ara in the pituitary and

Pituitary gonadotropins FSH and LH are oppositely regulated by the activin/follistatin system in a basal teleost, the eel.

European eels are blocked at a prepubertal silver stage due to a deficient production of pituitary gonadotropins. We investigated the potential role of activin/follistatin system in the control of eel gonadotropins. Through the development of qPCR assays for European eel activin β(B) and follistatin, we first analyzed the tissue distribution of the expression of these two genes. Both activin β(B) and follistatin are expressed in the brain, pituitary and gonads. In addition, a striking expression of both transcripts was also found in the retina and in adipose tissue. The effects of recombinant

Epidemiology and pathology of Anguillicoloides crassus in European eel Anguilla anguilla from the Tagus estuary (Portugal).

Infection of the European eel Anguilla anguilla by the swimbladder nematode Anguillicoloides crassus was investigated for the first time at 5 sampling sites in the Tagus estuary (Portugal). A total of 332 yellow eels were examined, revealing a prevalence of 56% and a mean intensity of 3.2 lumen worms per swimbladder. The effect of the host's sex and size on parasitism descriptors was studied. Only total length (TL) was considered a significant determinant, with larger eels harbouring a higher number of nematodes. Eels were parasitized in 4 of the 5 sampling sites, with prevalence values follow

The occurrence of persistent chlorinated and brominated organic contaminants in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in Irish waters.

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a relatively high lipid, long lived species capable of living in a variety of brackish, fresh and marine habitats. As such, eels can accumulate organic pollutants and have been incorporated into environmental monitoring programs as a suitable "bioindicator" species for the determination of the levels of organic contaminants within different water bodies. The global eel stock is now in decline and while the cause of the collapse remains unidentified, it is likely to include a combination of anthropogenic mortality in addition to environmental degradation.

Cortisol regulates eel (Anguilla anguilla) aquaporin 3 (AQP3) mRNA expression levels in gill.

Previous studies in eel (Anguilla anguilla) gill have shown that the expression of the aquaporin 3 (AQP3) water and small solute channel is dramatically decreased (mRNA abundance decreased by up to 97%) when these euryhaline fish are acclimated from freshwater (FW) to seawater (SW). However, AQP3 mRNA expression levels in the intestine following SW-acclimation do not change. The SW-acclimating corticosteroid hormone, cortisol has previously been shown to regulate the expression of aquaporins (particularly AQP1) in eel osmoregulatory tissues in a tissue-specific and isoform-specific fashion. Thyroid hormone receptor beta is widely expressed in the brain and pituitary of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica.

In a previous study, we cloned the thyroid hormone receptor betaB (TRbetaB) from a teleostean fish, the Japanese conger eel (Conger myriaster). The gene encoding this receptor is expressed in the brain and pituitary. In this study, we cloned TRbetaB from the brain of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) to extend our studies into thyroid hormone function in fish. RT-PCR analysis demonstrated that the TRbetaB transcripts were abundant in both the brain and pituitary. The TRbetaB cDNA encoded a 379 amino acid protein with much higher homology to the conger eel TRbetaB than to other fish TRs, sup

Isolation and chromosomal localization of ZFX homologue in genome of rice field eel (Monopterus albus Zuiew).

When used as a probe in rice field eel (Monopterus albus Zuiew) genomic Southern blotting hybridization, the giant panda Zfx gene hybridized strongly to a fragment of about 9.5 kb. A 512 bp long DNA fragment has been isolated by polymerase chain reaction from rice field eel genomic DNA using the primers for amplifying zinc finger repeats 7 to 13 of mammalian and reptilian ZFX-related genes. Cloned in pBS, four recombinant plasmids were selected randomly from male and female specimens and sequenced. The nucleotide sequences in these clones were identical and showed 88% and 87% identity to human

Pineapple juice for digestion of swamp eel viscera for harvesting infective-stage larva of Gnathostoma spp.

Third-stage larvae were used as antigen in the diagnosis of gnathostomiasis in Western blot analysis. Normally, the larvae were obtained from digestion of eel's liver (Fluta alba) by the enzyme pepsin. We used pineapple juice (Ananus comosus) instead of enzyme pepsin in harvesting Gnathostoma spinigerum third-stage larvae. The difference in recovered larvae numbers, between pineapple juice and pepsin, were not statistically significantly different (p>0.05). The larvae from pepsin and pineapple juice digestion were cultivated on BME for 7 days; the survival rates were not significantly differen

The role of the renin-angiotensin system in the control of blood pressure and drinking in the European eel, Anguilla anguilla.

The role of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the control of blood pressure and drinking was investigated in fresh water (FW)- and seawater (SW)-adapted eels, Anguilla anguilla, by comparing the effects of pharmacological manipulation through the use of papaverine (stimulator) and captopril (inhibitor) on the endogenous system. In SW eels basal blood pressure levels were lower (23.3 +/- 0.8 mm Hg) with correspondingly higher basal drinking rates (0.51 +/- 0.07 ml/kg/hr) and plasma AII concentrations (32.89 +/- 4.19 fmol/ml) compared to FW eels (33.8 +/- 1.3 mm Hg, 0.06 +/- 0.02 ml/kg/hr, 9

A morphometric analysis of regional differences in myotomal muscle ultrastructure in the juvenile eel (Anguilla anguilla L.).

Subpopulations of fast and slow fibres within the trunk musculature of elvers were examined using morphometric analysis of electron micrographs. Fibre regions were characterised by their histochemical staining characteristics, and individual fibres located using a coordinate mapping system utilising morphological features as reference points. Percentages of fibre volume occupied by mitochondria, myofibrils, sarcoplasmic reticulum (S.R.), and T-system were determined in each of the fibre groups, along a transect from the skin to the vertebral column (fibres 1-14, respectively). Perinatal programming of depressive-like behavior by inflammation in adult offspring mice whose mothers were fed polluted eels: Gender selective effects.

Several lines of evidence indicate that early-life inflammation may predispose to mental illness, including depression, in later-life. We investigated the impact of perinatal exposure to polluted eels on neonatal, postnatal, and adult brain inflammation, and on the resignation behavior of male and female adult offspring mice. The effects of maternal standard diet (laboratory food) were compared to the same diet enriched with low, intermediate, or highly polluted eels. Brain inflammatory markers including cytokines were assessed in offspring mice on the day of birth (i.e., on the postnatal day-

A note on the correlation between rainfall and the prevalence of Gnathostoma spp. infective stage larvae in swamp eels in Thailand.

Gnathostoma spinigerum is the major causative agent of human gnathostomiasis, a parasitic zoonosis with a great variety of clinical manifestations. Generally, humans are infected by consumption of third-stage larvae (L3) of G. spinigerum in infected hosts in the form of partially cooked or uncooked food. Surveys of the contamination of Gnathostoma spp. L3 in swamp eels are useful for prevention and control of diseases and have been continuously performed in Thailand. The author performed a retrospective study on 33 previous cross-sectional surveys with geographical data and the prevalence of G

Histological changes in the swimbladder wall of eels due to abnormal location of adults and second stage larvae of Anguillicola crassus.

In severe Anguillicola crassus infection of eels, adult helminths and 2nd stage larvae staying in the swimbladder lumen may occasionally get, through minor lesions of the tunica interna, into the subserosa of the swimbladder wall where they die and disintegrate. A thin connective tissue capsule is formed around the helminths that behave as foreign bodies in intercellular location, while the lacunas of the surrounding loose connective tissue comprise melanin-containing macrophages. In the environment of the 2nd stage larvae the formation of giant cells is a typical finding.

Generation and characterization of the monoclonal antibody against the heavy chain of American eel (Anguilla rostrata) IgM.

The American eel (Anguilla rostrata) is a significant aquaculture fish species in China, currently facing substantial losses due to various diseases. Limited information exists regarding the immune system of the American eel, necessitating the development of new tools to assess antibody responses following disease outbreaks or vaccinations. In this study, we cloned the constant region of the American eel IgM heavy chain (Igμ), which comprises 1326 base pairs and encodes 441 amino acid residues. Notably, transcripts of American eel Igμ were predominantly detected in the spleen, head kidney, and

Toward surrogate-based conservation: Preservation of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) spermatogonial stem cells.

In this study, we optimized cryopreservation and hypothermic storage protocols for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). As the European eel is listed as a critically endangered fish species on the IUCN red list, there is a strong need to develop and advance ex situ conservation strategies beyond the current conservation measures. Cryopreservation of SSCs was done through freezing and vitrification of testicular tissue pieces. Freezing was optimized through five sequential experiments and has yielded SSC post-thaw viability above 50%. The physiological competen
