An ultrastructural investigation of a baroreceptor zone in the common carotid artery of the domestic fowl.

The wall of the common carotid artery of the domestic fowl possesses a baroreceptor zone around the origin of the artery to the carotid body. The zone comprises about 20 small foci which have undergone a fibrous modification. Within these foci there are bare endings, which closely resemble ultrastructurally the baroreceptors of the mammalian carotid sinus in their mitochondrial content, relationship to collagen and elastic fibres, and abnormal organelles. These should be slowly adapting baroreceptors, similar functionally to the baroreceptors of the mammalian carotid sinus. Also present in the

[Are we sectioning the cochlear efferent system during vestibular neurotomy?].

INTRODUCTION: In addition to sensory neurons which transmit information from the inner ear to the brain, there is a system of efferent feedback fibers, called the olivocochlear system, carrying signals from the brain to the ear. Over the past half-century, the efferent system has been extensively studied in animals and results provided theories as to the functional significance of these efferents: to improve signal-to-noise ratio in the auditory periphery, to mediate selective attention, and to protect the inner ear from acoustic overexposure. The results of several studies conducted in man re

Speech-ABR in contralateral noise: A potential tool to evaluate rostral part of the auditory efferent system.

In parallel with the auditory afferent system, the auditory efferent system is active in all parts of the auditory pathways from auditory cortex to the cochlea. The auditory efferent system has two main segments: the rostral and the caudal parts. The rostral part, which starts from the cortical centers to thalamic nuclei and continues into collicular pathways in rostral brainstem, which sends its neural fibers to the main collicular nuclei especially inferior colliculus. The caudal part includes the olivocochlear bundle, which originates from the superior olivary complex and terminates on the

Reflex vascular responses to alterations in abdominal arterial pressure and flow in anaesthetized dogs.

The existence of abdominal arterial baroreceptors has long been controversial. Previously difficulties have been encountered in localizing a stimulus to abdominal arteries without affecting reflexogenic areas elsewhere. In these experiments, using anaesthetized dogs, the abdomen was vascularly isolated at the level of the diaphragm, perfused through the aorta, and drained from the inferior vena cava to a reservoir. Changes in abdominal arterial pressure were effected by changing the perfusion pump speed. During this procedure the flow back to the animal from the venous outflow reservoir was he

Single electrical shock of a somatic afferent nerve elicits A- and C-reflex discharges in gastric vagal efferent nerves in anesthetized rats.

The possibility that single electrical shock stimulation of somatic afferent nerves could evoke a reflex response in vagal efferent nerves innervating the stomach was examined using anesthetized, artificially-ventilated rats. A single shock to a hindlimb afferent nerve (tibial nerve) produced two distinct reflex components in gastric vagal efferent nerves; namely (1) A-reflex discharges with a latency of about 120 ms and a duration of about 200 ms elicited by stimulation of myelinated A afferent fibers, and (2) C-reflex discharges with a latency of about 360 ms and a duration of about 200 ms e

[Orthostatic hypotension and postprandial hypotension].

Both orthostatic hypotension (OH) and postprandial hypotension (PPH) may result from lesions in any part of the baroreflex arc, which comprises central autonomic network, afferent pathways, efferent pathways, and neuro-vascular junction. Nonetheless, most attention has been centered to the efferent pathways to date. In the present report, I discussed on the contribution of neuro-vascular junction and central autonomic network to the development of OH and PPH. I also referred to the essential difference in pathophysiology between OH and PPH. (1) Difference between OH and PPH: Essential differen

Auditory efferent suppression during alternate auditory attention in schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations.

Auditory hallucination is a complex and not yet fully understood phenomenon, and further research is necessary to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Previous research has shown the possible contribution of abnormal efferent auditory pathways to auditory hallucinations. Given the structural and functional top-down connection between the auditory cortex and the cochlea, this study investigated the efferent auditory system in schizophrenia patients experiencing verbal auditory hallucinations (VAHs). Alternate Auditory Attention (ALAUDIN©) tasks were integrated with Contralateral Suppression of

Dorsal midbrain syndrome: clinical and oculographic findings.

We report clinical and oculographic findings in seven patients with the dorsal midbrain syndrome (Parinaud's syndrome). All presented with limited upward voluntary gaze and convergence nystagmus with attempted upward voluntary gaze. Quantitative analysis of vertical eye movements documented characteristic abnormalities of saccades with relative preservation of reflex eye movements (ie, vestibular, optokinetic, and visual-vestibular). Vertical saccade velocity was only slightly decreased in five patients with tumors, indicating that the vertical burst neurons in the mesencephalic reticular form

A ganglionic intestinointestinal reflex activated by acute noxious challenge.

To investigate noxious stimulation-responsive neural circuits that could influence the gut, we recorded from intestinally directed (efferent) nerve filaments dissected from mesenteric nerves close to the small intestine in anesthetized rats. These exhibited baseline multiunit activity that was almost unaffected by vagotomy (VagX) and reduced only slightly by cutting the splanchnic nerves. The activity was halved by hexamethonium (Hex) treatment. When an adjacent gut segment received an intraluminal stimulus 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonate (TNBS) in 30% ethanol, mesenteric efferent nerve activit

The pathophysiological basis of renal nerve ablation for the treatment of hypertension.

Renal sympathetic innervation plays an important role in blood pressure regulation. Gradual activation of renal sympathetic efferent nerves enhances renin release, promotes sodium and water re-absorption, and reduces renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate. On the other hand, activation of renal afferent sympathetic nerves induced by renal injury results in central sympathetic activation. This reciprocal relationship between the kidneys and the brain is involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension and other disease conditions characterized by sympathetic overactivity. Renal sympathetic

Sympathetic neural outflow directly recorded in patients with primary autonomic failure: clinical observations, microneurography, and histopathology.

We evaluated 2 patients with primary autonomic failure, without clinical peripheral neuropathy. One had primary autonomic failure alone (PAF), and the other had autonomic failure and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Direct intraneural recordings demonstrated a marked reduction of sympathetic efferent nerve impulse activity in the PAF patient. The patient with MSA had spontaneous bursts of sympathetic nerve impulses that confirmed the functional integrity of post-ganglionic sympathetic efferent neurons. Neurosecretory activity of these neurons correlated with the electrophysiologic findings. The

The renal nerves in the newborn rat.

Immunocytochemical methods were used to investigate the distribution of afferent [calcitonin gene-related peptide-(CGRP) immunoreactive and substance P-immunoreactive] nerves and efferent (neuropeptide Y-immunoreactive and dopamine beta-hydroxylase-immunoreactive) nerves in the kidneys of rats within the 1st day of life. The newborn rat kidney possesses an afferent and efferent innervation. Both afferent and efferent nerves reach the kidney in the same bundles. The afferent sensory fibers predominate overwhelmingly in the renal pelvis and ureter while the efferent fibers clearly predominate in

An auditory-neuroscience perspective on the development of selective mutism.

Selective mutism (SM) is a relatively rare psychiatric disorder of childhood characterized by consistent inability to speak in specific social situations despite the ability to speak normally in others. SM typically involves severe impairments in social and academic functioning. Common complications include school failure, social difficulties in the peer group, and aggravated intra-familial relationships. Although SM has been described in the medical and psychological literatures for many years, the potential underlying neural basis of the disorder has only recently been explored. Here we expl

Sacral neuromodulation in lower urinary tract dysfunction.

Vesico-urethral dysfunction is a major problem in daily medical practice due to its psychological disturbances, its social costs and its high impact on quality of life. Recently, sacral neuromodulation, namely the electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves, appears to have become an alternative for radical bladder surgery particularly in cases of idiopathic bladder overactivity. The mechanism of action is only partially understood but it seems to involve a modulation in the spinal cord due to stimulation of inhibitory interneurons. Temporary sacral nerve stimulation is the first step. It comp

Centrifugal pathways protect hearing sensitivity at the cochlea in noisy environments that exacerbate the damage induced by loud sound.

Loud sounds damage the cochlea, the auditory receptor organ, reducing hearing sensitivity. Previous studies demonstrate that the centrifugal olivocochlear pathways can moderately reduce these temporary threshold shifts (TTSs), protecting the cochlea. This effect involves only the olivocochlear pathway component known as the crossed medial olivocochlear system pathway, originating from the contralateral brainstem and terminating on outer hair cells in the cochlea. Here I demonstrate that even moderate noise backgrounds can significantly exacerbate the cochlear TTSs induced by loud tones, but th

Afferent and efferent connections of the parapineal organ in lampreys: a tract tracing and immunocytochemical study.

The neural connections of the parapineal organ of two species of lampreys were studied with the fluorescent dye 1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3'3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) and with immunocytochemistry. The lamprey parapineal organ consists of a vesicle and a ganglion that are connected to the left habenula. Labeling experiments included the application of DiI to the parapineal organ, left and right fasciculus retroflexus, left habenula, and the left pretectal region. Afferent parapineal fibers run in the left fasciculus retroflexus to the interpeduncular nucleus. The parapineal fib

AAEM case report #2: the carpal tunnel syndrome.

The symptoms and signs which constitute the carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) result from entrapment or compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel. Electrodiagnostic studies may objectively document the presence of median neuropathy within the carpal tunnel and help distinguish CTS from other disorders such as cervical radiculopathy, neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, proximal median nerve compression syndromes, and polyneuropathy which may either mimic or occasionally coexist with CTS. Recording median nerve responses with wrist and palm stimulation allows determination of the wris

[Tonic afferent and efferent activities of the mesenteric nerves and their dependence on the motility of the small intestine].

Acute experiments in cats have revealed that every successive contraction of the jejunum or ileum increases spontaneous afferent and sympathetic efferent discharges in small branches of mesenteric nerves. The increased sympathetic efferent activity either limits or suppresses the contraction of the intestine portion. The above interrelationships among neural links of the regulation is also maintained by the closing of peripheral reflexes in the splanchnic plexus' nodes. These and other relevant data suggested a mechanism of the self-regulation of the intestine motility.

The technique of retrograde labeling of nerve cells with HRP and nuclear yellow as well as transganglionic anterograde HRP-tracing of sensory projections into the CNS were used to establish the motor and sensory innervation pattern of two parts of the rat esophagus: the cervical and the abdominal segment. For comparison, also the innervation of the anterior wall of the stomach was studied.
