Thirty-nine venoms from various vertebrate and invertebrate species were tested for their ability to consume haemolytic complement (C) activity upon incubation in fresh guinea-pig serum. Nineteen had `anti-complementary' activity, and these were provisionally sorted into the following groups: Pattern I—exemplified by the Naja haje (Egyptian cobra) and six other Elapidae species (all cobras), which induced selective consumption of C3—C9, and led to formation of a stable C3—C9-consuming intermediate; Pattern II—exemplified by the Agkistrodon rhodostoma (Malayan pit viper), Bitis arietans (puff a

Three-finger toxins are naturally occurring proteins in Elapidae snake venoms. Nowadays, they are gaining popularity because of their therapeutic potential. On the other hand, these proteins may cause undesirable reactions inside the body's cells. A full assessment of the safety of Naja ashei venom components for human cell application is still unknown. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the exogenous application of three-finger toxins on the cells of monocytes (U-937) and promyelocytes (HL-60), with particular emphasis on the modification of their membranes under the influenc

Background: Snakebite is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in India, particularly in rural regions. Of the 57 known venomous species of snakes in India, the 4 most dangerous snakes are the cobra, the common krait, the Russell viper, and the saw-scaled viper. Of these, the snakes commonly implicated with neurotoxicity are the cobra and the common krait-both elapidae. Acute neuromuscular weakness with respiratory system involvement is the most lethal neurotoxic effect. Case Report: A 24-year-old female was brought to the emergency department in an unresponsive state with a histo

Practical relevance: No fewer than 140 species of terrestrial snakes reside in Australia, 92 of which possess venom glands. With the exception of the brown tree snake, the venom-producing snakes belong to the family Elapidae. The venom of a number of elapid species is more toxic than that of the Indian cobra and eastern diamondback rattle snake, which has earned Australia its reputation for being home to the world's most venomous snakes. Clinical challenges: The diagnosis of elapid snake envenomation is not always easy. Identification of Australian snakes is not straightforward and there are n

Our study quantifies venom production in nine Mexican coral snake species (Micrurus), encompassing 76 specimens and 253 extractions. Noteworthy variations were observed, with M. diastema and M. laticollaris displaying diverse yields, ranging from 0.3 mg to 59 mg. For animals for which we have length data, there is a relationship between size and venom quantity. Twenty-eight percent of the observed variability in venom production can be explained by snake size, suggesting that other factors influence the amount of obtained venom. These findings are pivotal for predicting venom effects and guidi

Snake venoms are complex mixtures of toxic proteins that hold significant medical, pharmacological and evolutionary interest. To better understand the genetic diversity underlying snake venoms, we developed VenomCap, a novel exon-capture probe set targeting toxin-coding genes from a wide range of elapid snakes, with a particular focus on the ecologically diverse and medically important subfamily Hydrophiinae. We tested the capture success of VenomCap across 24 species, representing all major elapid lineages. We included snake phylogenomic probes in the VenomCap capture set, allowing us to comp

The location of female-specific/linked loci identified in Siamese cobra (Naja kaouthia) previously has been determined through in silico chromosome mapping of the Indian cobra genome (N. naja) as a reference genome. In the present study, we used in silico chromosome mapping to identify sex-specific and linked loci in Siamese cobra. Many sex-specific and sex-linked loci were successfully mapped on the Z sex chromosome, with 227 of the 475 specific loci frequently mapped in a region covering 57 Mb and positioned at 38,992,675-95,561,177 bp of the Indian cobra genome (N. naja). This suggested the

We report 26 cases of eye injuries resulting from cobra venom sprayed by Naja atra. This accounts for 14.5% of patients (26/173) treated for cobra injuries who presented to the emergency department of a snakebite treatment center in Guangzhou, South China. Pain, blurred vision, lacrimation, photophobia, and foreign body sensation were the most common symptoms, found in 24 patients. Ophthalmic examination revealed eyelid swelling and conjunctival congestion. Eye slit lamp examination showed obvious punctate corneal epithelial defects in four patients. Five patients received an intravenous infus

Colombia encompasses three mountain ranges that divide the country into five natural regions: Andes, Pacific, Caribbean, Amazon, and Orinoquia. These regions offer an impressive range of climates, altitudes, and landscapes, which lead to a high snake biodiversity. Of the almost 300 snake species reported in Colombia, nearly 50 are categorized as venomous. This high diversity of species contrasts with the small number of studies to characterize their venom compositions and natural history in the different ecoregions. This work reviews the available information about the venom composition, isola

The parasitic nematode Paracapillaria (Ophidiocapillaria) najae De, 1998, found in the Indian cobra Naja naja is redescribed and re-illustrated in the present study. The monocled cobra Naja kaouthia was discovered to be a new host for this parasite in central Thailand. A comprehensive description extending the morphological and molecular characteristics of the parasites is provided to aid species recognition in future studies. The morphometric characters of 41 parasites collected from 5 cobra specimens are compared with those described in the original studies. Phylogenetic analyses using mitoc

This case report describes a dog envenomed by a red-bellied black snake (RBBS; Pseudechis porphriacus) that experienced severe and life-threatening haemolysis. The dog presented with hypersalivation, facial swelling, mildly prolonged activated clotting time and the absence of neurological deficits. Envenomation was confirmed by positive identification of the snake and retrospective measurement of RBBS specific venom antigen (24 ng/mL) in serum. The dog was initially hospitalised, treated with intravenous fluids and one vial of tiger-brown snake antivenom which is recommended for RBBS envenomat

Selection is predicted to drive diversification within species and lead to local adaptation, but understanding the mechanistic details underlying this process and thus the genetic basis of adaptive evolution requires the mapping of genotype to phenotype. Venom is complex and involves many genes, but the specialization of the venom gland toward toxin production allows specific transcripts to be correlated with specific toxic proteins, establishing a direct link from genotype to phenotype. To determine the extent of expression variation and identify the processes driving patterns of phenotypic d

Phospholipases A2 (PLA2) are the most lethal and noxious component of Naja naja karachiensis venom. They are engaged to induce severe toxicities after their penetration in victims. Present study was designed to highlight hydrolytic actions of PLA. in an egg yolk mixture and to encounter their deleterious effects via medicinal plants of Pakistan. PLA2 were found to produce free fatty acids in a dose dependent manner. Venom at concentration of 0.1 mg was found to liberate 26.6 pmoles of fatty acids with a decline in pH1 of 0.2 owing to the presence of PLA2 (133 Unit/mg). When quantity of venom w

The venom proteomes of Micrurus altirostris and M. corallinus were analyzed by combining snake venomics and venom gland transcriptomic surveys. In both coral snake species, 3FTx and PLA(2) were the most abundant and diversified toxin families. 33 different 3FTxs and 13 PLA(2) proteins, accounting respectively for 79.5% and 13.7% of the total proteins, were identified in the venom of M. altirostris. The venom of M. corallinus comprised 10 3FTx (81.7% of the venom proteome) and 4 (11.9%) PLA(2) molecules. Transcriptomic data provided the full-length amino acid sequences of 18 (M. altirostris) an

UNLABELLED: Hydrophilic nanoparticles have received much attention for delivery of therapeutic peptides, proteins, and antigens. Chitosan (CS) is a biodegradable and nontoxic polysaccharide, as a carrier for drug delivery. The study purpose was to evaluate the influence of a number of factors on the encapsulation of Naja naja oxiana (Indian or speckled cobra) venom and loading capacity, as well as to investigate the physicochemical structure of nanoparticles. CS nanoparticles were produced based on the ionic gelation process of tripolyphosphate (TPP) and CS. All the preparations were estimated

Ala-screening mutagenesis studies on Arg1, Pro2, Arg3, Phe4 and Thr54 of Naja naja atra (Taiwan cobra) chymotrypsin inhibitor showed that inhibitory potency and gross conformation of the mutants were not significantly different from those of wild-type inhibitor. Nevertheless, the R1A mutant had an appreciable decrease in the structural stability underlying thermal unfolding and urea-induced denaturation. Alternatively, deleting the first three residues at the N-terminus caused a reduction in structural stability as well as inhibitory potency. In sharp contrast to wild-type and other mutated in

Some 2,000 species of mites of the family Trombiculidae are known in the world. The 6-legged larvae are mostly ectoparasites of reptiles, birds, mammals and invertebrates. Their 8-legged active nymphs and adults are free-living predators. In the Asia-Pacific region, a few species in various genera are vectors of scrub typhus and scrub-itch. In this a paper, a very bizarre trombiculid species, Vatacarus ipoides Southcott 1957, endoparasitic in the trachea of the amphibious sea snake, Laticauda colubrina (Schenider) is re-described based mostly on new-born larvae reared in the laboratory. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is present in the venom of Elapid snakes, except the Mambas. Although the physiological role of AChE in snake venom is uncertain, it may contribute to acute neuromuscular paralysis following envenomation. With the aim of repurposing clinically used drugs for snakebite envenoming, this study investigated the inhibition of AChE from snake species of Southern Africa. Hemachatus haemachatus and Naja nivea venom presented with high AChE activity, which was inhibited by tacrine, galantamine and donepezil with IC50 values ranging from 0.49 to 3.73 μM.

Handling venomous snakes poses a significant risk of envenomation. In the case of spitting cobras, additional precautions, like wearing face shields, are necessary to prevent ophthalmic envenomation. Although, the Monocled Cobra (Naja kaouthia) is not a true spitting cobra, however some spitting events has been reported from Northeastern India and Nepal but ocular envenomation is scarce. In this report, a snake researcher experienced eye exposure to spitted venom while measuring a N. kaouthia. The researcher promptly irrigated his eyes and received medical treatment. He experienced intense pai
