Mild degenerative changes of hip cartilage in elderly patients: an available sample representative of early osteoarthritis.

This study investigated the cellular and molecular changes which occur in cartilage from adults with femoral neck fracture (FNF) and osteoarthritis (OA), and explored the similarities in hip cartilage obtained from elderly patients and patients with early OA. Femoral heads were retrieved from 23 female patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). This group included 7 healthy patients with FNF (hFNF), 8 elderly adults with FNF (eFNF), and 8 elderly patients with hip OA (OA). After high-field MRI T2 mapping, osteochondral plugs were harvested from the weight-bearing area of femoral heads f

Chondrocyte Adipogenic Differentiation in Softening Osteoarthritic Cartilage.

A chondrocyte-to-osteoblast lineage continuum exists in the growth plate. Adipogenic differentiation of chondrocytes in vivo should be investigated. Here, unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC), which can induce osteoarthritic lesions in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), was applied to 6-wk-old C57BL/6 mice. Matrix loss in TMJ cartilage was obvious, as demonstrated by safranin O staining, and the condylar cartilage elastic modulus values, detected by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), were reduced, indicating cartilage softening that might be linked with loss of the highly charged proteoglycan

Morphology and computed tomography of the larynx in the white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris).

The white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris) is a Neotropical marsupial that occurs in the Brazilian territory. The larynx is an important organ of vocalization in mammals, although, other laryngeal functions are more fundamental for survival of mammals than phonation. The anatomical knowledge of respiratory structures is pivotal for a better understanding of the species. Thus, this study aimed to examine the larynx of the white-eared opossum by gross anatomy, computed tomography and histological description. For this, 10 adult (six females and four males) white-eared opossums (D. albiventr

[Etiopathogenesis and biodynamics of closed laryngo-tracheal injuries].

The blunt laryngotracheal trauma, once quite a rare phenomenon, has become quite relevant today, particularly because of the great increase in automotive traffic. It was, therefore, felt knowledge of the etiopathogenesis and biodynamics of this form of trauma is important for proper diagnosis and treatment. After having noted that the literature in this regard is generally incomplete and fragmentary, the authors felt it worth compiling the various etiopathogenesis and biodynamic factors involved; characteristics of blunt laryngotracheal trauma. Three basic elements of this form of trauma were

Infrared Laser Effect on Healthy and Ossified Costal Cartilage: The Development of Stable Load-Bearing Autoimplants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The laser-induced stress relaxation provides new prospects to obtain stable long fragments of costal cartilage for autoimplantation avoiding the risk of spontaneous deformation and poor engraftment. However, the age-related alterations of cartilage may sufficiently influence its interaction with infrared (IR) laser radiation and disrupt the effectiveness and safety of the technique. The aim of the work is to study the influence of the structural quality of costal cartilage on its interaction with IR laser and efficiency of obtaining of curved implants for trachea surg

Interspecies comparison of temporomandibular joint condylar cartilage extracellular matrix from macro to microscopy.

Interspecies comparisons of the extracellular matrix of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condylar cartilage are necessary to elucidate the mechanisms underlying its superior mechanical properties, to guide the construction of animal models of TMJ-related diseases, and to establish standards for the engineering of TMJ condylar cartilage. Here we characterize and compare TMJ condylar cartilage from six different species from a materials science perspective, including structure, composition and mechanical properties from the macroscopic to the microscopic level. The gross morphology showed obvious i

Implementation of a gait cycle loading into healthy and meniscectomised knee joint models with fibril-reinforced articular cartilage.

Computational models can be used to evaluate the functional properties of knee joints and possible risk locations within joints. Current models with fibril-reinforced cartilage layers do not provide information about realistic human movement during walking. This study aimed to evaluate stresses and strains within a knee joint by implementing load data from a gait cycle in healthy and meniscectomised knee joint models with fibril-reinforced cartilages. A 3D finite element model of a knee joint with cartilages and menisci was created from magnetic resonance images. The gait cycle data from varyi

[Onco-surgical significance of anatomo-morphological specificity of glottic region of the larynx].

Glottis is a medium level of the larynx, involving the vocal cords, vocal process of arytenoid cartilage, and the anterior and posterior commissures. This region of heterogeneous histomorphological structure has specific characteristics: the internal striated muscles, the outer and inner perichondrium, atypical intra-cartilaginous areas of ossification, and unusual muscular insertion to cartilage. Microtomy of 3 thick successive sections was performed at the level of the upper surface of vocal cords. Standard histological staining methods were used. Microphotographs were taken by light microsc

Cartilage defect location and stiffness predispose the tibiofemoral joint to aberrant loading conditions during stance phase of gait.

OBJECTIVES: The current study quantified the influence of cartilage defect location on the tibiofemoral load distribution during gait. Furthermore, changes in local mechanical stiffness representative for matrix damage or bone ingrowth were investigated. This may provide insights in the mechanical factors contributing to cartilage degeneration in the presence of an articular cartilage defect. METHODS: The load distribution following cartilage defects was calculated using a musculoskeletal model that included tibiofemoral and patellofemoral joints with 6 degrees-of-freedom. Circular cartilage

Chondrogenic Potential of Cryopreserved Aortic Allografts: Guiding Perichondrial Regeneration in Tracheal Repair.

Native tracheal cartilage exhibits limited regenerative capacity, making the search for suitable biomaterials for tracheal repair a persistent challenge. In this study, a non-decellularized cryopreserved aortic allograft (CAo) is investigated as a scaffold for tracheal cartilage regeneration. Originally used to reconstruct infected aortas, CAo retains key features of a large artery-abundant elastic fibers and smooth muscle cells-and demonstrates favorable in vitro biocompatibility with chondrocytes. A trachea-CAo patch construct maintains tensile properties comparable to native trachea and tol

Mechanical Characterization and Constitutive Modeling of Human Trachea: Age and Gender Dependency.

Tracheal disorders can usually reduce the free lumen diameter or wall stiffness, and hence limit airflow. Trachea tissue engineering seems a promising treatment for such disorders. The required mechanical compatibility of the prepared scaffold with native trachea necessitates investigation of the mechanical behavior of the human trachea. This study aimed at mechanical characterization of human tracheas and comparing the results based on age and gender. After isolating 30 human tracheas, samples of tracheal cartilage, smooth muscle, and connective tissue were subjected to uniaxial tension to ob

Liquid crystal elastomers for orthopedic applications: Comparative analysis of formulations and viscoelastic properties.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability worldwide and often necessitates surgical interventions such as joint fusion or replacement when cartilage degeneration becomes severe. Conventional implants composed of cobalt chromium (CoCr), ceramics, or ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) provide durability but lack viscoelastic compliance, leading to stress mismatch, wear, and long-term complications. Hydrogels and synthetic cartilage substitutes have been explored as alternatives; however, their insufficient mechanical strength and inconsistent clinical outcomes limit the

Extracellular Calcium Ion Concentration Regulates Chondrocyte Elastic Modulus and Adhesion Behavior.

Extracellular calcium ion concentration levels increase in human osteoarthritic (OA) joints and contribute to OA pathogenesis. Given the fact that OA is a mechanical problem, the effect of the extracellular calcium level ([Ca2+]) on the mechanical behavior of primary human OA chondrocytes remains to be elucidated. Here, we measured the elastic modulus and cell-ECM adhesion forces of human primary chondrocytes with atomic force microscopy (AFM) at different extracellular calcium ion concentration ([Ca2+]) levels. With the [Ca2+] level increasing from the normal baseline level, the elastic modul

Deficient Mechanical Activation of Anabolic Transcripts and Post-Traumatic Cartilage Degeneration in Matrilin-1 Knockout Mice.

Matrilin-1 (Matn1), a cartilage-specific peri-cellular and extracellular matrix (ECM) protein, has been hypothesized to regulate ECM interactions and transmit mechanical signals in cartilage. Since Matn1 knock-out (Matn1-/-) mice exhibit a normal skeleton, its function in vivo is unclear. In this study, we found that the anabolic Acan and Col2a transcript levels were significantly higher in wildtype (Matn1+/+) mouse cartilage than that of MATN1-/- mice in vivo. However, such difference was not observed between Matn1+/+ and MATN1-/- chondrocytes cultured under stationary conditions in vitro. Cy

Dynamic loading enhances chondrogenesis of human chondrocytes within a biodegradable resilient hydrogel.

Hyaline cartilage in the knee joint is a soft tissue that is both stiff and elastic, which raises unique challenges in developing scaffolds for the repair of cartilage injury. In this study, we mixed poly-d,l-lactic acid/polyethylene glycol/poly-d,l-lactic acid (PEG-PDLLA-DA) with polycaprolactone-poly(ethylene glycol)-polycaprolactone (PEG-PCL-DA) with the aim to create a cartilage-like hydrogel. Results indicated that the hydrogel made from PEG-PDLLA-DA/PEG-PCL-DA (50/50) was biodegradable and resilient, able to bear compressive loads with strains up to 50%. Human chondrocytes maintained hig
