Elbow Joint Anthropometry in Central Indian Population: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The carrying angle of the elbow is a critical aspect of upper limb biomechanics, influencing arm movement, and hand precision. This study aims to assess elbow joint parameters, including the carrying angle, articular surface angle, and anatomical alignment to understand normal elbow morphometry and its variations based on age, sex, and side dominance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 300 right-hand dominant, healthy volunteers aged 18-50 years. Elbow joint measurements were taken using anteroposterior (AP) and lateral radiographs. The carrying angle, articular surface ang

Loose bodies in right elbow joint: Post traumatic? or post infective?

Tuberculous osteomyelitis after open fracture is uncommon. Early diagnosis of tubercular arthritis is difficult because of insidious onset, indolent process and mild or non specific local or systemic symptoms. This case report describes the fibrinous loose bodies in elbow joint of a patient who sustained a compound fracture presented with chronic non healing discharging sinus. Intra-operatively some suspected seed like bodies were removed and sent for histopathological examination which showed circumscribed homogenous fibrinous bodies with focal area of hyalinization and few embedded tiny oste

Nondominant arm advantages in load compensation during rapid elbow joint movements.

This study was designed to examine interlimb asymmetries in responding to unpredictable changes in inertial loads, which have implications for our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying handedness. Subjects made repetitive single joint speed constrained 20 degrees elbow flexion movements, while the arm was supported on a horizontal, frictionless, air-jet system. On random trials, a 2-kg mass was attached to the arm splint prior to the "go" signal. Subjects were not given explicit information about the mass prior to movement nor were they able to view their limb or the mass. Accordin

Grading of functional results of elbow joint arthrolysis after fracture treatment.

In the treatment of posttraumatic contracture of the elbow joint, arthrolysis is a proven procedure. We used a stepwise operative approach starting laterally and including an additional medial and dorsal incision if needed. A total of 91 patients with arthrolysis of the elbow could be followed-up on average 44 months (range 9-102 months) joint after operative (58, 63.7%) and non-operative (33, 36.3%) fracture treatment. The mean preoperative range of motion (ROM) in flexion/extension was 49 degrees (SD +/- 38 degrees), while in pronation/supination it was 89 degrees (SD +/- 66 degrees). Postop

Mechatronic Design of a Prototype Orthosis to Support Elbow Joint Rehabilitation.

Injuries in the elbow area, such as lateral and medial epicondylitis, are the leading causes of consultation with health specialists. Therefore, this research proposes the mechatronic design of an orthosis with a graphic interface that supports professionals in the rehabilitation of the elbow joint through the execution of flexion-extension and pronation-supination movements. For the development of the rehabilitation prototype, mechatronic design, co-design, and IDEF0 methodologies are used, performing activities such as actuator characterization, simulations, and modeling, among others. Patient outcomes for the Internal Joint Stabilizer of the Elbow (IJS-E).

BACKGROUND: Recently, the Internal Joint Stabilizer of the Elbow (IJS-E) was developed as an internal dynamic fixator for use in the setting of traumatic elbow instability. This study reviews the patients who had an IJS-E placed at our institution. Specifically, postoperative complications, postoperative functional outcomes, and need for subsequent procedures were reviewed. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of patients in whom the IJS-E was implanted from June 2016 to July 2018. Indications for use, range of motion at final follow-up, and the need for subsequent procedures w

The lateral ligament is injured preferentially in posterolateral dislocation of the elbow joint.

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between the degree of injury to the medial and lateral collateral ligaments (MCL and LCL) and associated fractures in patients with a posterolateral dislocation of the elbow, using CT and MRI. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 64 patients who presented between March 2009 and March 2018 with a posterolateral dislocation of the elbow and who underwent CT and MRI. CT revealed fractures of the radial head, coronoid process, and medial and lateral humeral epicondyles. MRI was used to identify contusion of the bone and collateral

Tuberculous Arthritis of the Elbow Joint: An Uncommon Location with a Diagnostic Dilemma.

Musculoskeletal tuberculosis accounts for 1%-3% of all cases of tuberculosis (TB) worldwide with elbow involvement being even less common. The most cases of tuberculous arthritis occur in patients born in and emigrated from endemic regions, especially in patients who are co-infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We present a rare case of tuberculous septic arthritis of the elbow joint in a 78-year-old African-American female from the United States, with no history of travel abroad. Her presenting symptoms included pain, swelling, and decreased range of motion of the right elbow for

The supratrochlear lymph nodes: their diagnostic significance in a swollen elbow joint.

In the differential diagnosis of a swollen elbow, the palpation of the supratrochlear glands is useful. They are not enlarged in a traumatic elbow joint. They are enlarged, discrete and shotty in rheumatoid arthritis. In tuberculosis, they are enlarged, matted and they may caseate and form a cold abscess on the medial aspect of the supratrochlear region of the arm.

Endurance time, pain and resumption in passive loading of the elbow joint.

This study investigated reactions in passively loaded, fully extended elbow joints in 13 men. Pain reactions during and after loading were studied, as were endurance time, T(end), and resumption time, Tr. The loading moment on the elbow joint, Mn, varied between 7 and 100% of maximum elbow moment. Discomfort/ pain was estimated with Borg's CR-10 scale. T(end) decreased with increasing load level. The opposite was found for the resumption time: the higher the load, held until T(end), the shorter the Tr. The pain limiting the working capability originated mainly from muscle tissue and not from t

[The collateral ligaments of the elbow joint: their functional anatomy with special reference to the pathology and treatment of post-traumatic stiff elbow].

Factors which cause stiff elbow were investigated both experimentally and clinically. Since a thickened and shortened medial collateral ligament is often seen in stiff elbow, then changes in the length of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and in the length of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) were investigated in cadaver elbow specimens, and correlated with the observed range of motion. The MCL was divided into five bundles, and the LCL into three bundles. The length changes during flexion and extension of the elbow joint were measured, and the length change pattern was found to be diff

Shoulder elevation and arm extension influence elbow joint loading during door-opening in total elbow arthroplasty: a musculoskeletal modelling study.

Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is used to treat end -stage elbow pathologies, yet implant failure is common due to excessive joint loading. This study compared elbow-joint loading, kinematics, and kinetics in TEA patients and healthy controls, and assessed the influence of elbow flexion-extension (FE) and shoulder elevation (SE). Seventeen participants (6 TEA, 11 controls) performed a door-opening task. Musculoskeletal modeling was used to estimate elbow kinematics, net joint moments FE and varus-valgus (VV)), and humeroulnar joint reaction forces (HUJRF). Statistical parametric mapping (SPM)

Analysis of Factors Affecting Range of Motion Loss after Elbow Joint Release Surgery in Elderly Patients with Traumatic Elbow Stiffness.

AIM: Elbow joint release surgery is commonly used to treat elbow joint stiffness. Though it can restore elbow joint mobility, some patients may still experience range of motion (ROM) loss after surgery. Therefore, this study aims to explore the factors influencing ROM loss after elbow joint release surgery in elderly patients with traumatic elbow stiffness. METHODS: This retrospective study included 122 elderly patients with traumatic elbow stiffness who underwent elbow joint release surgery at Hanzhong Central Hospital from January 2023 to April 2024. The patients with range of motion loss w
