Progressive motor neuron disease associated with electrical injury.

A patient in perfect health prior to electrical shock developed an ALS-like syndrome after the shock. Onset of the disease occurred in the limb through which the shock entered, and subsequently followed a course well-described in previous case reports. Possible mechanisms of disease are discussed.

Electric scooter-related traumatic brain injuries: a scoping review of injury patterns, risk factors, management, and clinical outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Electric scooters (e-scooters) have rapidly gained popularity in urban environments worldwide. While promoted as sustainable and convenient, their widespread adoption has led to a rise in injury rates, particularly traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Despite increasing recognition of e-scooter-related head trauma, the literature remains fragmented and lacks focused synthesis. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases was conducted in March 2025. Studies were included if they reported on e-scooter-related TBIs in real-world settin

Numerical Investigation on Head and Brain Injuries Caused by Windshield Impact on Riders Using Electric Self-Balancing Scooters.

To investigate head-brain injuries caused by windshield impact on riders using electric self-balancing scooters (ESS). Numerical vehicle ESS crash scenarios are constructed by combining the finite element (FE) vehicle model and multibody scooter/rider models. Impact kinematic postures of the head-windshield contact under various impact conditions are captured. Then, the processes during head-windshield contact are reconstructed using validated FE head/laminated windshield models to assess the severity of brain injury caused by the head-windshield contact. Governing factors, such as vehicle spe

Electrical conditioning strategies in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Although the care of patients presenting with a myocardial infarction (MI) has improved considerably over recent years, mortality in this group is still relatively high. To preserve myocardial function, it is crucial that blood flow is restored as quickly as possible to ischemic areas after an infarction, but this return of flow itself induces detrimental processes that eventually can lead to increased myocardial damage and cell death, a process indicated by the term ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Myocardial IRI is, among others, associated with extensive alterations in energy metabolism,

An experimental model of peripheral nerve electrical injury in rats.

INTRODUCTION: Although several studies have investigated models of nerve electrical injury, only a few have focused on electrical injury to peripheral nerves, which is a common and intractable problem in clinical practice. Here, we describe an experimental rat model of peripheral nerve electrical injury and its assessment. METHODS: A total of 120 animals were subjected to short-term corrective electrostimulation (50 Hz, 1-s duration) applied at varying voltages (control, 65, 75, 100, 125, and 150 V) to the exposed left sciatic nerve. Behavioural testing, electrophysiological measurements, and

Torture-induced hand electrical injury: A case report.

The authors report an unusual case of hand electrical injury related to torture in a war refugee. The patient was referred for the reconstruction of bilateral hand function several years after being tortured. He presented with severe hand contractures combined with motor and sensory loss. After nonoptimal treatment in the acute period, the reconstruction options were limited by the delayed management. This unique clinical presentation can be explained by repetition of prolonged electrical shocks using a low-voltage current.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Simulation Curriculum: Electrical Injury.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical injuries are rare but potentially life-threatening medical emergencies that require providers to manage a critically ill patient while recognizing and treating the unique sequelae associated with the diagnosis. This simulation case is designed to give pediatric and emergency medicine residents, fellows, attendings, and nurses the opportunity to practice these skills in a realistic setting. METHODS: This simulation-based curriculum was designed for a high-fidelity mannequin in an emergency department resuscitation room but can be adapted to fit a variety of learning en

Fatal traumatic brain injury with electrical weapon falls.

INTRODUCTION: While generally reducing morbidity and mortality, electrical weapons have risks associated with their usage, including eye injuries and falls. With sufficient probe spread, an uncontrolled fall to the ground typically occurs along with the possibility of a fatal brain injury. METHODS: We analyzed possible risk factors including running and elevated surfaces with established head-injury criteria to estimate the risk of brain injury. We searched for cases of arrest-related or in-custody death, with TASER(®) electrical weapon usage where fall-induced injuries might have contributed

Electrical burn causing a unique pattern of neurological injury.

Neurological involvement is not uncommon in patients who sustain electrical injury. The exact mechanism of nervous system damage following electrical trauma is not fully understood. The gamut of possible neurologic manifestations following electrical injury is diverse. This case report describes a young man with a unique pattern of neurological injury following an electrical burn. The combination of brachial plexopathy, partial Horner's syndrome, and phrenic nerve palsy secondary to electrical injury has not been previously described in the literature.

Carpal tunnel syndrome following an electrical injury in a child.

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is very rare in children and has been reported very infrequently in the literature. We present an unusual case of CTS in a 14-year-old girl who developed this following an accidental electrical shock. As far as we are aware, this is the first case report of CTS in a child following electrical injury. This rare complication of electrical injury can easily be disregarded or misdiagnosed as neuropraxia, and this can delay appropriate treatment, as evidenced by this case. We propose that CTS should be considered when instigating initial medical care after an electrical

Cardiac monitoring always required after electrical injuries?

BACKGROUND: Controversy still exists regarding inpatient monitoring of patients exposed to electrical injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a monocentric retrospective study, we evaluated the medical records of 169 patients admitted to the University Hospital of Cologne from January 2000 to January 2014 because of electrical trauma. The electrocardiogram (ECG) data of 40 patients were missing. RESULTS: Patients in our collective were predominantly young men (60 %) with an average age of 17.5 ± 17 years (1 year to 73 years). The electrical trauma occurred occupational (20 %), domestic (65 %), a

Motoneuron disease after electric injury: a case report.

Several cases of motor neuron disease (MND) after electric injury have been reported in the last number of years, but the relationship between electric injury and MND remains controversial. Herein we report the case of a 60-year-old man who developed a MND following an electrical trauma. In the case presented here, the onset of disease at the site of lightning strike and the short interval of time between the electrical injury and the clinical onset of MND raise the possibility of considering electrical shock as a trigger factor for MND.

Return to work after low voltage electrical injury.

Low voltage electrical injury is associated with minor or no cutaneous burns and its symptoms rarely appear on initial examination. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability to return to work among patients with low voltage electrical injury. A retrospective hospital chart review was conducted among patients with low voltage electrical injury admitted to the outpatient burn clinic of a rehabilitation hospital between January 1, 2002 and March 21, 2006. Symptoms at follow-up visits and return to work status were compared between patients with electrical contact injuries and those w

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head following an electrical injury to the leg.

We report a case of osteonecrosis of the femoral head in a young man who is a carrier of the prothrombin gene mutation. We suggest that an electrical injury to his lower limb may have triggered intravascular thrombosis as a result of this mutation with subsequent osteonecrosis of the femoral head. No case of osteonecrosis of the femoral head secondary to a distant electrical injury has previously been reported.

Delayed reversible motor neuronopathy caused by electrical injury.

Electrical injury may cause central nervous system (CNS) complications and peripheral nerve disorders. Delayed neurologic complications are rarely reported. A case of delayed reversible motor neuronopathy caused by low-voltage electrical injury is reported due to its rarity. A 22-year-old female received an electric shock of 110 volts while pushing up a metal gate during a rainy morning on April 16, 2005. She initially suffered loss of consciousness for several hours, and then became quadriplegic, from which she completely recovered 10 days later. After return to work for 1 month, she develope

Principles of microvascular reconstruction in burn and electrical burn injuries.

Free tissue transplantation is a rarely indicated procedure in burn reconstruction. As the versatility and variability of free flaps have significantly developed during recent years, so have the indications for this procedure expanded. This study reports retrospectively the results of 75 free flaps in 60 severely burned patients using 20 different free flaps. This experience enabled us to establish reconstructive principles pertinent to the type of injury (burn versus high voltage injuries) and the timing of reconstruction procedures. In high voltage injuries (n = 26) early free flap coverage

[Emergency treatment of injuries following lightning and electrical accidents].

The pattern of injuries following electrical accidents and the treatment by emergency teams differ depending on whether exposure was to a low-voltage or high-voltage power source or to a lightning bolt. Tissue damage results from the direct effect of current on cell membranes and from conversion of electrical energy into heat. Depending on the magnitude of electrical energy and the duration of exposure, cardiac dysrhythmia, damage to nerve tissue, extensive burns and shock may occur. Multi-system injury is frequently observed, either directly related to electrical shock or secondary to concurr
