Comparison of electric field modeling pipelines for transcranial direct current stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: Electric field modeling utilizes structural brain magnetic resonance images (MRI) to model the electric field induced by non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in a given individual. Electric field modeling is being integrated with clinical outcomes to improve understanding of inter-individual variability in tDCS effects and to optimize tDCS parameters, thereby enhancing the predictability of clinical effects. The successful integration of modeling in clinical use will primarily be driven by choice of tools and procedures implemented in computational modeling.

Interindividual variability of electric fields during transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS).

Transcranial temporal interference stimulation (tTIS) is a novel non-invasive brain stimulation technique for electrical stimulation of neurons at depth. Deep brain regions are generally small in size, making precise targeting a necessity. The variability of electric fields across individual subjects resulting from the same tTIS montages is unknown so far and may be of major concern for precise tTIS targeting. Therefore, the aim of the current study is to investigate the variability of the electric fields due to tTIS across 25 subjects. To this end, the electric fields of different electrode m

Transcranial electric stimulation optimizes the balance of visual attention across space.

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) provides a way to modulate spatial attention by enhancing the ratio of neural activity between the left and right hemispheres, with a potential benefit for the rehabilitation of visual neglect. METHODS: We tested the effect of bilateral tDCS in healthy individuals performing a visual detection task. This protocol consists in the positioning of the anode and cathode on mirror positions over the left and right parietal areas. The stimulation was repeated over three days to maximize the chance to observe a bias to the hemispace controlate

[Evaluation of typical atrial flutter cycle duration during electric stimulation cardioversion].

We performed 225 transesophageal electric cardiac stimulation (TEECS) procedures in order to restore sinus rhythm in patients with atrial flutter (AF) and ischemic heart disease (IHD) (n = 161) and postmyocarditic cardiosclerosis (n = 64). Mean duration of history of arrhythmia was 7.1 years, mean duration of present arrhythmic episode was 25.3 +/- 3.6 days. No antiarrhythmic therapy (AAT) was used before TEECS. Depending on AF cycle duration all patients were divided into 3 groups: group 1 (n = 75)--below 220 ms, group 2 (n = 108)--220-259 ms, and group 3 (n = 42)-- > or = 260 ms. Significant

Magnetic and electric stimulation to elicit the masseteric exteroceptive suppression period.

OBJECTIVES: The present study compared the perception of electric and magnetic stimuli for reflex appearance threshold (RT) and reflex saturation threshold (RS) of the exteroceptive suppression reflex (ES) in the masseter muscle. METHODS: Twelve healthy males and 12 females (age: 24.2+/-3.2 years) participated. The surface EMG was recorded from the left masseter muscle. The stimulus intensities were set as multiple values of the sensory threshold (ST), and were applied to the skin above the left mental nerve. Subjects reported the perceived intensity of the stimulus on a numeric rating scale

Repetitive electric stimulation elicits enduring improvement of sensorimotor performance in seniors.

Age-related changes occur on all stages of the human somatosensory pathway, thereby deteriorating tactile, haptic, and sensorimotor performance. However, recent studies show that age-related changes are not irreversible but treatable through peripheral stimulation paradigms based on neuroplasticity mechanisms. We here applied repetitive electric stimulation (rES) to the fingers on a bi-weekly basis for 4 weeks to induce enduring amelioration of age-related changes in healthy individuals aged 60-85 years. Tactile, haptic, and motor performance gradually improved over time of intervention. After

Role of electric stimulation in bladder evacuation following spinal cord transection.

Neural stimulation is potentially a valuable therapeutic tool in the treatment of neurogenic bladder with detrusor areflexia. We studied 20 dogs in different groups, up to eight months, and compared the effect of electric stimulation with intermittent catheterization, specially during spinal shock phase. We found that early stimulation hastened the return of detrusor activity. When stimulation was delayed, the bladder could still regain its activity, and when the pace-maker was turned off, the detrusor activity was gradually decreased. Neurostimulation can completely empty bladder up to eight

[Functional electric stimulation of the phrenic nerve and its clinical significance].

The peripheral parts of the phrenic nerve are healthy in some of the patients who require permanent or intermittent care in a respirator owing to reduced respiratory function of central aetiology. In such cases, continual care in a mechanical respirator can be avoided, and diaphragm function maintained by means of functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the phrenic nerve with carefully controlled electrical impulses. The method is suitable for use in certain cases of quadriplegia, or in patients with sleep apnoea. Experience with the method has shown that health care costs can be reduced an

[Reproducibility of reciprocal atrioventricular tachycardia during intracardiac and transesophageal electric stimulation].

A feasibility to provoke reciprocal atrioventricular tachycardias was examined in 23 patients with atrioventricular nodal tachycardia and 17 with orthodromal tachycardia in the presence of the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome with endocardiac and transesophageal diagnostic pacing. Atrioventricular nodal tachycardia could be induced in all 23 (100%) patients both by endocardiac and transesophageal pacing. Orthodromal tachycardia was provoked only in 9 (53%) of 17 patients by transesophageal pacing. It was generally noted that tachycardia induction required more "aggressive" regimens of transesoph

[Effect of electric stimulation of auricular acupuncture points on H-reflex].

The non-nociceptive H-reflex in the musculus soleus were recorded before and after auricular electroacupuncture (AEAP) in patients with vertebrogenic pain syndrome. Changes of the H-reflex on the side of the pain syndrome were observed after ipsi- and contralateral AEAP, the latter producing effect more often. Changes of H-reflex are mainly of facilitating character (71.4%) and, rarely, of inhibitory character (14.3%). In the part of patients AEAP produced distinct facilitation of M-response.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy in children: treatment with transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation.

During the past 6 years, ten children with reflex sympathetic dystrophy were treated. Pain in an extremity was the initial complaint in all patients. The pain was unilateral in 90% of the patients; upper and lower extremities were affected with equal frequency. Tenderness to palpation, extreme hyperesthesia, and dysesthesia were other dominant features. All patients had some evidence of autonomic nervous system dysfunction in the affected extremity (swelling, color change, decreased temperature, and/or hyperhidrosis). The median duration of symptoms prior to referral and diagnosis was 5 months

Exacerbation of a case of myasthenia gravis during therapeutic electric stimulation.

In patients with myasthenia gravis, vigorous exercise and electric stimulation produce weakness that is usually reversed by rest. We describe a case of persistent weakness in a 31-year-old woman with myasthenia gravis following therapeutic electric stimulation. She was injured in an automobile accident, with cervical and lumbar muscle strain diagnosed by a local emergency room physician. She consulted a chiropractor two days later because her symptoms had not abated. The chiropractic treatment of short-wave diathermy, high-voltage electric stimulation and spinal manipulation continued thrice w

[Electric stimulation of the heart in ventricular tachycardia: achievements and prospects].

Cardiac electrostimulation was conducted in 19 patients to prevent and control paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia. In 8 of those, an attempt was made to prevent tachycardia by continuous endocardial ventricular stimulation in the demand regimen. In 11 patients, a radio-frequency stimulator was implanted, its electrode positioned in the right ventricle to control current tachycardiac attacks. A 3-5-second stimulation at frequencies of 180-220 impulses per minute was sufficient to control the attack in 8 of the patients, while programmed ventricular stimulation only was needed to produce the eff

Attenuation of autonomic dysreflexia during functional electrical stimulation cycling by neuromuscular electrical stimulation training: case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury (SCI) may cause impairments of the motor, sensory, and autonomic nervous systems, which result in adverse changes in body composition and cardiovascular health. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling may provide an effective alternative approach to perform exercise and improve cardiovascular health after SCI. Persons with an injury at or above T6 level are at high risk of developing a life-threatening complication of autonomic dysreflexia (AD). CASE PRESENTATION: Two participants with motor-complete C6 SCI completed either 12 weeks of passive range of

Enhanced Optogenetic Stimulation of Retinal Ganglion Cells With Assistive Electric Stimulation for Low Optical Power Artificial Vision.

High optical power of optogenetic stimulation may cause phototoxicity during chronic application. To lower the optical power, a hybrid approach which combines optogenetic and electric modalities has been proposed. However, the hybrid stimulation effect has not been well studied in the retina, which would be an ideal target of optogenetic intervention for sight restoration. Here, we investigated the assistive effect of electric pulses while optogenetic stimulation in both wild-type (wt) and retinal degeneration 10 (rd10) mouse retinas. We injected AAV2-CAG-ChR2(H134R)-EGFP into the 4-week-old m

Mapping the electric field of high-definition transcranial electrical stimulation across the lifespan.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) is a non-invasive technique widely used in modulating brain activity and behavior, but its effects differ across individuals and are influenced by head anatomy. In this study, we investigated how the electric field (EF) generated by high-definition tES varies across the lifespan among different demographic groups and its relationship with neural responses measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We employed an MRI-guided finite element method to simulate the EF for the two most common tES montages (i.e., targeting the dorsolateral pref
