Temporal and Spatial Variability of Surface Motor Activation Zones in Hemiplegic Patients During Functional Electrical Stimulation Therapy Sessions.

The goal of this study was to investigate surface motor activation zones and their temporal variability using an advanced multi-pad functional electrical stimulation system. With this system motor responses are elicited through concurrent activation of electrode matrix pads collectively termed "virtual electrodes" (VEs) with appropriate stimulation parameters. We observed VEs used to produce selective wrist, finger, and thumb extension movements in 20 therapy sessions of 12 hemiplegic stroke patients. The VEs which produce these three selective movements were created manually on the ergonomic

Results of late programmed electrical stimulation and long-term electrophysiologic effects of amiodarone therapy in patients with refractory ventricular tachycardia.

Thirteen patients with refractory, recurrent, life-threatening ventricular tachycardia (VT) underwent electrophysiologic testing before and after long-term amiodarone therapy. Nine patients (69%) had coronary artery disease, 3 (23%) had nonischemic cardiomyopathy and 1 patient (8%) had mitral valve prolapse. At control electrophysiologic study, programmed electrical stimulation (PES) induced VT in all patients: sustained VT in 11 and nonsustained VT in 2 (9 beats and 31 beats). After oral loading with amiodarone, 1200 mg/day for 14 days, followed by maintenance therapy with 408 +/- 20 mg/day (

Mirror therapy versus functional electrical stimulation cycling in post-stroke lower limb rehabilitation: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Stroke commonly leads to lower extremity motor impairment and reduced quality of life. Adjunctive rehabilitation approaches are often required to enhance recovery during the subacute phase. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of mirror therapy (MT) and functional electrical stimulation-assisted cycling (FES-C) as adjuncts to conventional rehabilitation in patients with subacute stroke. METHODS: Forty-five patients were randomly assigned to a control, MT, or FES-C group (n = 15 each). All participants received conventional rehabilitation, with 30 minutes replaced by MT or FES-C in

Efficacy of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Combined with Traditional Swallowing Therapy in Acute Stroke Patients with Dysphagia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been proposed as an adjunct to conventional swallowing therapy; however, evidence regarding its additive benefit in early-stage stroke remains inconclusive. This study aimed to determine whether NMES combined with traditional swallowing therapy provides superior outcomes compared with traditional therapy alone in enteral tube-dependent patients with acute and subacute post-stroke dysphagia. A total of 57 participants with post-stroke dysphagia who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to either the NMES combined with traditional swall

Effects of physical therapy with neuromuscular electrical stimulation in acute and late septic shock patients: A randomised crossover clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with sepsis and immobility in the intensive care unit are associated with muscle weakness, and early mobilisation can counteract it. However, during septic shock, mobilisation is often delayed due to the severity of the illness. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) may be an alternative to mobilise these patients early. This study aims to identify whether NMES performed within the first 72 hours of septic shock diagnosis or later is safe from a metabolic perspective. METHODS: This is the analysis of two randomised controlled crossover studies. Patients with acute s

Home-Based Functional Electrical Stimulation-Assisted Hand Therapy Video Games for Children With Hemiplegia: Development and Proof-of-Concept.

We describe the development and three case reports of a home-based intervention for children with hand hemiplegia that integrates custom video games with contralaterally controlled functional electrical stimulation (CCFES). With CCFES, stimulated opening of the more-affected hand is modulated by volitional opening of the less-affected hand. Video games that solicit goal-oriented, skill-requiring movement have shown promise for treating hemiplegia, but they have not previously been combined with electrical stimulation in children. Three children ages 8, 9, and 11 with moderate-to-severe hand he

Restoration of Upper Limb Function in an Individual with Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy using Functional Electrical Stimulation Therapy: A Case Study.

Non-traumatic spinal cord pathology is responsible for 25-52% of all spinal cord lesions. Studies have revealed that spinal stenosis accounts for 16-21% of spinal cord injury (SCI) admissions. Impaired grips as well as slow unskilled hand and finger movements are the most common complaints in patients with spinal cord disorders, such as myelopathy secondary to cervical spondylosis. In the past, our team carried out couple of successful clinical trials, including two randomized control trials, showing that functional electrical stimulation therapy (FEST) can restore voluntary reaching and/or gr
