INTRODUCTION: Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common compression neuropathy. Grading the severity of carpal tunnel syndrome is an important factor in deciding on the type of treatment. This study aims to determine the relationships between the findings of the electrodiagnosis and ultrasonography methods based on the severity of carpal tunnel syndrome.
METHODS: In this prospective clinical study, 50 patients (96 wrists) who were referred to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department of the Shohada Tajrish Hospital, Tehran, Iran (from March 2021 to November 2022) were studied. All p

Carpal tunnel syndrome is typically diagnosed from history and physical examination then confirmed with electrodiagnosis. Electrodiagnosis provides only limited anatomic information and evaluation of space-occupying lesions. The authors present two cases in which demonstrated flexor pollicis longus tenosynovitis coexistent with carpal tunnel syndrome was diagnosed with ultrasonography. Ultrasonography is an effective modality that enhances the investigation of diseases in the soft tissues of the wrist and the hand. It can be useful in directing specific treatment by increasing diagnostic accur

BACKGROUND: Electrodiagnostic tests (EDx) can determine when symptoms and signs suggestive of idiopathic ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (cubital tunnel syndrome; CubTS) is due to measurable ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE), cervical radiculopathy, or median neuropathy at the carpal tunnel, and when there is no measurable neuropathology associated with the symptoms. The role of EDx in management of CubTS is debated.
QUESTIONS: (1) What is the percentage of patients with CubTS (both including and excluding patients with a previous electrodiagnosis of idiopathic UNE) that have EDx results cons

Making the correct carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosis is the most important step in treatment. Electrodiagnosis can confirm carpal tunnel syndrome and eliminate mimicking diseases from the differential. Treatment should provide satisfactory pain relief and protection of the median nerve from further deterioration. Electrodiagnosis testing provides information on focal median mononeuropathy at the wrist that could be used to classify carpal tunnel syndrome from mild to severe. The information obtained can help patients to understand and choose treatment in a patient-centered fashion. False positi

The article considers characteristics of clinical manifestations of dental plexalgia, a new form of the disease related to impairment of dental plexuses. In a clinicophysiological study of 56 patients with dental plexalgia conducted at a neurostomatological department the authors used rheofaciography, thermometry and thermography of the face skin, esthesiometry, and electrodiagnosis of the oral mucosa. Electrodiagnosis of the oral mucosa helps to specify the diagnosis of dental plexalgia. The authors describe differential diagnosis criteria reflecting the peculiarities of the clinical picture

Historical study of electrodiagnosis indicates that nerve conduction block is an old notion, used as early as the second century by Galien and then early in the 19th by physiologists such as Müller and Mateucci. Although introduced into the field of human pathology by Mitchell in 1872, who used it to study nerve injuries, and then by Erb in 1874 to study radial palsy, the contribution of nerve conduction blocks to electrodiagnosis was not exploited until the 1980s. At that time, attempts to improve early diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome showed that among the electrophysiological consequenc

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) comprises a complex of symptoms in the hand, including pain and paresthesia and weakness of hand muscles thought to result from compression of the median nerve. Many clinicians either refer patients for electrodiagnostic studies to aid diagnosis or conduct electrodiagnostic studies, which may be useful as an aid to decisions on treatment. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the evidence base for the use of electrodiagnostic tests in the diagnosis and management of carpal tunnel syndrome. A systematic search was undertaken for studies that included pati

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal brachial plexus palsy causes upper extremity paralysis owing to birth-related brachial plexus injury. Although intraoperative electrodiagnostic techniques are routinely used to guide nerve repair in adult brachial plexus surgery, their utility in neonatal cases remains unclear. This scoping review examines whether intraoperative electrodiagnosis aids surgical decision-making, particularly in distinguishing cases amenable to neurolysis, from those that may benefit from nerve reconstruction.
METHODS: In adherence to PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review of literature was

OBJECTIVES: To assess the usefulness of serial electrophysiology in Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in a multicenter setting and the reasons for change in electrodiagnostic subtypes with serial studies.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed serial electrophysiology of 51 patients with GBS from 4 European centres. Proportions of subtypes were determined at each timing. Individual case analyses were also performed where diagnostic changes occurred with either criteria, to ascertain if changes were due to disease progression or criteria inadequacy.
RESULTS: At first study, comparing old vs new cri

All disorders of neuromuscular transmission (NMT) may cause ventilatory failure, albeit rarely. Respiratory muscle weakness is occasionally the presenting feature of myasthenia gravis (MG), the Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS), hypermagnesemia and botulism. Chronic MG, congenital myasthenic syndromes and LEMS may be acutely exacerbated by various intercurrent conditions and by drugs which interfere with NMT. Finally, in the ICU, difficulty in weaning from the ventilator may be caused by prolonged use of neuromuscular blocking agents. Electrophysiological studies of NMT disorders in the

In this study we compared the effect of temperature variation (> or = 32 degrees C to < or = 27 degrees C) on latency differences median to ulnar (ringdiff), median to radial (thumbdiff), palmar median to ulnar (palmdiff) and the sum of three, the combined sensory index (CSI), in 15 controls and 12 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). After cooling, ringdiff was the most reliable technique with little variation in both controls and patients; thumbdiff decreased dramatically in controls and could even come within normal limits in patients; palmdiff increased only in patients; CSI decreas

Here, we present the first instance of Guillain-Barre syndrome variant in a patient with beta thalassemia and iron overload who had a history of transfusion before the onset of symptoms. Our patient was a 50- year-old Persian woman with history of intermediate thalassemia who had been treated with pack cells because of low hemoglobin level. Ten days after transfusion, she developed numbness of arms, left sided ptosis, and afterwards dysarthria, dysphagia, and bilateral ptosis. Electrodiagnosis on day 12 revealed reduced repetition of f-waves in the upper limbs and reduced recruitment with 1+ f

Temperature is an important and common variable that modifies nerve conduction study parameters in practice. Here we compare the effect of cooling on the mixed palmar median to ulnar negative peak-latency difference (PMU) in electrodiagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Controls were 22 subjects (19 women, mean age 42.1 years, 44 hands). Patients were diagnosed with mild symptomatic CTS (25 women, mean age 46.6 years, 34 hands). PMU was obtained at the usual temperature, >32 degrees C, and after wrist/hand cooling to <27 degrees C in ice water. After cooling, there was a significantly grea

BACKGROUND: Spinal gnathostomiasis results in serious multiorgan impairments. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and serology help in diagnosis, and assessing the severity and extent of the disease. However, the physiology of neural pathway could not be demonstrated. Electrodiagnosis may have a role in demonstrating the functions of the central and peripheral neural pathways and prognostic assessment of the disease.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: An 18-year-old man presented with radicular pain and rapid progressive weakness of lower extremities, leading to paraplegia in three days. A clinical evaluation

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may be mimicked by disorders affecting the different levels of the motor system from cortex to muscle. Clinical heterogeneity is a feature of both ALS and related syndromes allowing for a large differential diagnosis. During the initial stage of a motor disorder false positive and false negative diagnoses of ALS are possible. Examples of disorders that should not be misdiagnosed as ALS, because their prognosis and treatment differ, are multifocal motor neuropathy, Kennedy's bulbospinal atrophy, cervical myelopathy, hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism. In the electrodiagnosis of cubital tunnel syndrome, the abductor digiti minimi (ADM) muscle is frequently used to evoke compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) in order to measure the motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) in the ulnar nerve. Slowing of the MNCV across the elbow is a major criteria in the electrodiagnosis of cubital tunnel syndrome. However, in advanced cases, slowing of the MNCV is also seen in the forearm segment, thus, localization of the nerve palsy is sometimes difficult. We evoked CMAP from the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) muscle to assess the value of electrophysiologica
