Abundance and Seasonal Variations of Snail Intermediate Hosts of Schistosomiasis in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria.

One of the strategies for the control and elimination of schistosomiasis is the control of its snail vectors in an endemic area, as is done in other tropical diseases like malaria. However, the strategy currently practiced for the control of the disease in Nigeria is the annual mass administration of preventive chemotherapy (Praziquantel) among school-age children while neglecting the control of its snail intermediate host and other control components. The neglect of malacology and vector control will slow the elimination targets and timeline of 2030 set by the WHO. In this study, we investiga

Differential adaptive responses to chronic stress of maternally stressed male mice offspring.

It is well established that stress in early life can alter the activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but most studies to date have focused on HPA reactivity in response to a single acute stress. The present study addressed whether stress in pregnant mice could influence the adaptive responses of their offspring to chronic stress. Male offspring were exclusively used in this study. Elevated plus maze tests revealed that 14 d of repeated restraint stress (6 h per day; from postnatal d 50-63) significantly increased anxiety-like behavior in maternally stressed mice. NBI 27914

Human Neural Stem Cell Extracellular Vesicles Improve Recovery in a Porcine Model of Ischemic Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent work from our group suggests that human neural stem cell-derived extracellular vesicle (NSC EV) treatment improves both tissue and sensorimotor function in a preclinical thromboembolic mouse model of stroke. In this study, NSC EVs were evaluated in a pig ischemic stroke model, where clinically relevant end points were used to assess recovery in a more translational large animal model. METHODS: Ischemic stroke was induced by permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), and either NSC EV or PBS treatment was administered intravenously at 2, 14, and 24 hours

Development of an air bubble curtain to reduce underwater noise of percussive piling.

Underwater bubbles can inhibit sound transmission through water due to density mismatch and concomitant reflection and absorption of sound waves. For the present study, a perforated rubber hose was used to produce a bubble curtain, or screen, around pile-driving activity in 6-8-m depth waters of western Hong Kong. The percussive hammer blow sounds of the pile driver were measured on 2 days at distances of 250, 500, and 1000 m; broadband pulse levels were reduced by 3-5 dB by the bubble curtain. Sound intensities were measured from 100 Hz to 25.6 kHz, and greatest sound reduction by the bubble

Effects of blood alcohol concentrations on negative punishment: implications for decision making.

OBJECTIVE: A series of studies examined how various blood ethanol concentrations influenced the effectiveness of a negative punishment procedure in a risk-taking/decision-making task. Based on the animal punishment literature plus the impression that ethanol diminishes the effects of punishment and impairs decision making, it was predicted that individuals receiving alcohol would increase their risk- taking behavior despite the presence of a negative punishment stimulus (point loss) given on a variable schedule. METHODS: In Experiment 1, a within-subjects design with repeated measures was use

Investigation on the epidemiological factors of Clonorchis sinensis infection in an area of south China.

To detect the epidemiological factors of Clonorchis sinensis infection in Hengxian County, one of counties in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region where Schistosoma japonicum was endemic but eliminated in the late 1980s, a questionnaire was designed with 37 questions covering socioeconomic conditions and human behavior, contamination of the environment and fish ponds, inadequate farming/fishery practices; and the formalin-ether sedimentation technique was used to examine the feces of cats, dogs and pigs for the eggs of C. sinensis. Fresh fish was sliced and digested to detect the metacercariae of

Enhancing poultry health management through machine learning-based analysis of vocalization signals dataset.

Population expansion and rising consumer demand for nutrient-dense meals have both contributed to an increase in the consumption of animal protein worldwide. A significant portion of the meat and eggs used for human consumption come from the poultry industry. Early diagnosis and warning of infectious illnesses in poultry are crucial for enhancing animal welfare and minimizing losses in the breeding and production systems for poultry. On the other hand, insufficient techniques for early diagnosis as well as infectious disease control in poultry farms occasionally fail to stop declining producti

Microglial depletion and abnormalities in gut microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acids in mice after repeated administration of colony stimulating factor 1 receptor inhibitor PLX5622.

PLX5622, a brain-penetrant highly specific inhibitor of the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R), is used to eliminate microglia in the brain. Considering the role of microglia and gut microbiota in the brain homeostasis, this study was undertaken to investigate whether repeated intragastric administration of PLX5622 (65 mg/kg/day for consecutive 7 days) could affect the composition of gut microbiota and the concentration of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in fresh feces of adult mice. Repeated administration of PLX5622 caused significant reductions of the expression of genes and prote

Residual inhibition: From the putative mechanisms to potential tinnitus treatment.

Neurons in various sensory systems show some level of spontaneous firing in the absence of sensory stimuli. In the auditory system spontaneous firing has been shown at all levels of the auditory pathway from spiral ganglion neurons in the cochlea to neurons of the auditory cortex. This internal "noise" is normal for the system and it does not interfere with our ability to perceive silence or analyze sound. However, this internal noise can be elevated under pathological conditions, leading to the perception of a phantom sound known as tinnitus. The efforts of many research groups, including our

Neonatal bladder inflammation alters the role of the central amygdala in hypersensitivity produced by Acute Footshock stress in adult female rats.

There is increasing evidence that chronic pain may be associated with events that occur during critical periods of development. Recent studies have identified behavioral, spinal neurophysiological and spinal/peripheral neurochemical differences in rats that have experienced neonatal bladder inflammation (NBI): a putative model of the chronically painful bladder disorder, interstitial cystitis. Stress has been shown to exacerbate symptoms of interstitial cystitis and produces bladder hypersensitivity in animal models. We recently reported that Acute Footshock-induced bladder hypersensitivity wa

Widespread transmission in diverse ecotypes challenges visceral leishmaniasis control in East Africa.

East Africa is emerging as the global hot spot of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), yet efforts to eliminate it are hindered by substantial knowledge gaps in its ecoepidemiology. Here, we report on the high prevalence of Leishmania infection in Phlebotomus orientalis in Marsabit county, Kenya (3.9%), and Gedaref state, Sudan (3.6%), where this species comprised 99.8% (n = 1185) and 100% (n = 1350) of captured Phlebotomus females, respectively. In Aba Roba, Ethiopia, Phlebotomus martini accounted for 94.4% of 184 collected Phlebotomus females and had a lower infection rate of 1.5%. Phlebotomus orien

Transcranial and precise optical neuromodulation mediated by NIR photoactive nanosheets.

Remote modulation of specific neurons is critical for neural circuit dissection and neurological disease therapy. Traditional neuromodulation strategies applying electrodes and external stimuli may suffer from invasive injuries and insufficient spatiotemporal resolution, respectively. Herein, transcranial optical neuromodulation with precise spatiotemporal control was realized by establishing a nanophotonic neural interface, where the polyethylene glycol-modified two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx (MXene) served as near-infrared (NIR) photoactive nanosheets (PANS). Polymer modification of the nanosheets

Neonatal novelty exposure ameliorates anoxia-induced hyperactivity in the open field.

We investigated in an animal model of neonatal anoxia whether effects of oxygen deprivation on emotional reactivity can be reversed by neonatal novelty exposure, a behavioral method, involving daily 3min away from the home cage for the first 3 weeks of life. Male neonates were exposed to either 100% N2 gas (Anoxia) or room air (Control) for 25min on postnatal day 1. Within each of the two treatment conditions, one-half of the neonates were further individually exposed to relatively novel non-home cages for 3min daily during postnatal days 2-21 (Novel: NAnoxia=20; NControl=16), while the other

Role of conditioned reinforcers in the initiation, maintenance and extinction of drug-seeking behavior.

The development of a secondary reinforcer as a result of associating a neutral stimulus (buzzer) with intravenous (IV) doses of morpine was studied in rats. Secondary reinforcement developed in the absence of physical dependence and followed the association of the stimulus with either response-contingent or non-contingent injections of morphine. Strength of the conditioned reinforcer, measured in terms of responding on a lever for the stimulus plus infusion of saline solution, was proportional to the unit dosage of morphine employed in pairings of buzzer and drug. When extinction of the lever-

The opioid peptides. A role in hypertension?

This review is an attempt to highlight evidence that may implicate the endogenous opioid system in the pathogenesis of hypertension in humans. The evidence raised includes biochemical, physiological, pharmacological, and behavioral studies conducted in in vitro and in vivo systems, experimental models of hypertension, and humans with essential hypertension. While the compelling biochemical and pharmacological evidence in experimental animals clearly shows the presence of opioid peptides and their receptors in strategic sites of cardiovascular control and potent cardiovascular response to opioi

Microcomputer-assisted open field measures of rats given ethanol on postnatal days 1-8.

This study examined direct effects of postnatally administered ethanol upon growth and adult open field behaviors in male rats. Charles Rivers CD albino rats (13 litters) were used in 5 groups; ethanol, Sustagen, pair-fed, handled, or unhandled. Experimental animals were intragastrically fed ethanol (Sustagen [Mead Johnson] vehicle) twice daily, comparable volumes isocaloric Sustagen, handled or left unhandled. Ethanol doses on postnatal days 1-8, respectively, were: 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 3, 2, 1 g/kg. Ethanol-pups ceased weight gains at 4 g/kg; a handled pup, kept with a nonlactating female until it

Beyond serum testosterone: Sexual experience delays the decline of sexual behavior and preserves cellular density in the medial preoptic area of gonadectomized male rats.

Testosterone (T) modulates male sexual behavior, partly through actions in the medial preoptic area (mPOA) of the anterior hypothalamus. Although gonadectomy (GDX) rapidly depletes circulating T, the decline in sexual behavior is gradual, taking weeks or months. In some species, prior sexual experience delays this behavioral decay; however, whether this occurs in rats remains unclear. Here, we examined the effects of GDX and prior sexual experience on serum T levels, sexual behavior, and mPOA cellular density in male Wistar rats. Males were assigned to one of two groups: sexually experienced (

Late-long-term potentiation magnitude, but not Aβ levels and amyloid pathology, is associated with behavioral performance in a rat knock-in model of Alzheimer disease.

Cleavage of Amyloid precursor protein by β- and γ-secretases lead to Aβ formation. The widely accepted pathogenic model states that these mutations cause AD via an increase in Aβ formation and accumulation of Aβ in Amyloid plaques. APP mutations cause early onset familial forms of Alzheimer's disease (FAD) in humans. We generated App-Swedish (Apps ) knock-in rats, which carry a pathogenic APP mutation in the endogenous rat App gene. This mutation increases β-secretase processing of APP leading to both augmented Aβ production and facilitation of glutamate release in Apps/s rats, via a β-secreta

[Gastroprotective and antidepressant-like effect of plum pectin (Prunus domestica L.) under water-immobilization stress in laboratory mice].

Stress effects activate the processes of free radical oxidation in the organism, lead to hyper production of reactive radicals and oxidative stress, provoking the development of an inflammatory process in various parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Pectin polysaccharides together with the enzyme components of the endogenous antioxidant system contribute to the elimination of the imbalance between prooxidants and antioxidants in the tissues of stressed animals and have a gastroprotective and antidepressant-like effect. The aim of the research was to evaluate the gastroprotective, antioxidant a
