Emotion regulation and disordered eating behaviour in youths: Two daily-diary studies.

OBJECTIVE: Disordered eating cognitions and behaviours in childhood and adolescence have been identified as precursors for the development of eating disorders. Another important contributor to eating disorder risk is maladaptive emotion regulation. However, while the regulation of negative affect has been the focus of much research, the literature on the role of positive emotion regulation in eating pathology is extremely limited. The present study extends previous research by examining the regulation of both positive and negative affect in disordered eating using two waves of a daily diary de

Identity Functioning and Eating Disorder Symptomatology: The Role of Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies.

Introduction: Adolescence is the most critical life period for the development of eating disorder (ED) symptomatology. Although problems in identity functioning and emotion dysregulation have been proven important risk and maintaining factors of ED symptomatology, they have never been integrated in a longitudinal study. Methods: The present study is part of the Longitudinal Identity research in Adolescence (LIA)-study and aimed to uncover the temporal interplay between identity functioning, cognitive emotion regulation, and ED symptomatology in adolescence. A total of 2,162 community adolescen

Childhood trauma and disordered eating: Exploring the role of alexithymia and beliefs about emotions.

Although often perceived as non-threatening, disordered eating poses a significant risk to physical and psychological wellbeing. Given the modest effectiveness of current interventions, there is a need to identify specific psychological targets for treatment. One risk factor that has long been liked to eating issues is childhood trauma. The present study aimed to clarify the associations between five distinct forms of trauma and three disordered eating behaviours (Cognitive Restraint, Uncontrolled Eating, and Emotional Eating). In addition, it aimed to determine the role of alexithymia and bel…

Understanding problematic eating in out-of-home care: The role of attachment and emotion regulation.

Children living in Out-of-Home Care (OoHC) are thought to be especially vulnerable to developing problematic eating behaviours due to their likelihood of having insecure attachment styles and emotion regulation deficits. Despite this increased risk, our understanding of problematic eating among children in OoHC is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to; (1) Explore the rate of problematic eating behaviours among children living in OoHC, specifically residential and foster care; (2) Investigate how carers manage problematic eating and (3) Understand carers' perceptions of the role of attachmen

Emotion regulation difficulties in binge eating disorder with and without the overvaluation of weight and shape.

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between overvaluation of weight/shape ('overvaluation') and emotion regulation (ER) difficulties among women with binge eating disorder (BED) symptoms. Four groups of women were recruited from a community-based sample and compared on ER difficulties: individuals with probable BED with (n=102) and without (n=72) overvaluation, and non-binge eating obese (n=40) and healthy-weight (n=40) control participants. Data for patients with a formal diagnosis of BED receiving treatment from a previous study were included for numerical comparative

Course and moderators of emotional eating in anorectic and bulimic patients: a follow-up study.

Emotion dysregulation has been found to be associated with specific eating attitudes and behavior in Eating Disorder (ED) patients. The present study evaluated whether emotional eating profile of ED patients changes over time and the possible effects of a psychotherapeutic intervention on the emotional eating dimension. One hundred and two ED patients (28 with Anorexia Nervosa restricting type [AN-R], 35 with Anorexia Nervosa binge/purging subtype [AN-B/P] and 39 with Bulimia Nervosa [BN]) were evaluated at baseline, at the end of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, at 3 and 6 year follow-up. The link between negative emotions and eating disorder behaviour in patients with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Several theoretical models suggest that deficits in emotional regulation are central in the maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN). Few studies have examined how patients view the relationship between negative affect and anorectic behaviour. We explored how patients with AN manage the aversive emotions sadness, anger, fear and disgust, and how they link these experiences to their eating disorder behaviours. METHODS: Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 14 women aged 19-39 years diagnosed with AN (DSM-IV). Interviews were analyzed using Grounded The

Bulimics' responses to food cravings: is binge-eating a product of hunger or emotional state?

This study examined the roles of hunger, food craving and mood in the binge-eating episodes of bulimic patients, and identified the critical factors involved in the processes surrounding binge-eating episodes that follow cravings. This was a prospective study of the binge-eating behaviour of 15 women with bulimia nervosa. The participants used food intake diaries and Craving Records to self-monitor their nutritional behaviour, hunger levels and affective state. Cravings leading to a binge were associated with higher tension, lower mood and lower hunger than those cravings not leading to a bing

Restrained and emotional eating in preadolescents with functional somatic symptoms: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Functional somatic symptoms (FSS), encompassing physical symptoms not attributable to well-defined physical diseases, are prevalent in childhood and adolescence. Such symptoms - particularly the subtype of functional gastrointestinal symptoms (FGS) - have been linked to problematic eating behaviours in adults. However, little is known about this relationship in preadolescents. This study investigated the associations between FSS and problematic eating behaviours, including restrained and emotional eating, in a population-based cohort of 11-12-year-old Danish children. We further ex…

Childhood emotional maltreatment and adolescent restrictive eating: A longitudinal structural equation modeling and network analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood emotional abuse and neglect are established risk factors for adolescent disordered eating, yet the mechanisms linking early emotional maltreatment to restrictive eating remain unclear. Using a dual-level framework integrating construct-level pathways with symptom-level interactions, this longitudinal study examined the psychological mechanisms linking childhood emotional maltreatment to restrictive eating and the moderating role of self-concept clarity. METHODS: Adolescents were recruited at baseline (N = 1245) from a public secondary school in southwestern China, of whom
