Evaluation of emotional intelligence (EI) in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients compared to healthy individuals.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is known as an autoimmune astrocytopathic disorder involving central nervous system (CNS). The aim of this study was to compare Emotional Intelligence (EI) score between NMOSD patients and healthy individuals, and to find out the possible effect of this disease on EI. METHODS: A total of 45 NMOSD participants and 48 healthy individuals were enrolled in this study. Demographic information (e.g., gender and age) of all participants as well as their level of education, and data on the patients' duration of disease were collected. EI of e

A Three-Year Emotional Intelligence Intervention to Reduce Adolescent Aggression: The Mediating Role of Unpleasant Affectivity.

Adolescents' aggressive behavior is a growing social problem with important implications for psychosocial adjustment. The teaching of emotional skills has an important impact on reducing aggression in schools. However, little scientific evidence has shown the explanatory mechanism through which this training reduces aggression during adolescence. This article aims to provide evidence for the effectiveness of a 3-year longitudinal intervention among adolescents in nine Spanish schools. A total of 476 adolescents participated. Results showed a reduction in physical and verbal aggression in Time

Construct validity of the Italian version of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) v2.0.

In 2 studies, we assessed the construct validity of the Italian version of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) version 2.0. In Study 1, we administered the MSCEIT together with measures of crystallized and fluid intelligence, personality, and affect. In Study 2, we administered the MSCEIT together with indexes of dispositional coping, emotion regulation strategies, alexithymia, state-trait anxiety, depression, and depressive rumination. We evaluated the factorial structure of the MSCEIT with a confirmatory factor analysis model using data combined from Study 1 and 2.

Alexithymia and emotional intelligence in patients with panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a broad personality construct signifying the ability to perceive and to regulate affects within oneself. Alexithymia is another personality construct denoting difficulty in identifying and expressing emotions, with an externally oriented thinking style. Although previously considered to be independent, some studies have shown that these constructs overlap. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the levels of EI and alexithymia in patients with panic disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The subjects included

Intelligibility of Emotional Speech in Chinese Older Adults: Effects of Age-Related Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: The intelligibility of speech with emotional prosody may decline with aging and hearing loss. In Mandarin Chinese, both lexical tone and emotional prosody rely on pitch variations, raising the possibility that emotional prosody modulates speech intelligibility. This study examined the effects of aging and age-related hearing loss on word recognition for Mandarin words spoken with different emotional prosodies. METHOD: Four groups participated: older adults with normal hearing (ONH; n = 35, 60-86 years of age), older adults with mild-moderate hearing loss (OHL; n = 22, 61-83 years of

Resource building as a mechanism of action of emotional intelligence on subjective wellbeing: the role of proactive coping.

The consistent finding in the literature of a positive relationship between Emotional intelligence (EI) and Subjective well-being (SWB) has led to the search for mechanisms of action that increase our understanding of what EI involves and how it works. Within this framework, the current study explored the relationship between proactive coping and EI and SWB, as well as its possible mediating role in the relationship between both variables. With this aim, two studies were carried out in an adolescent population based on two theoretical frameworks of EI, and consequently, using different measure

The moderating role of emotional intelligence in the link between self-esteem and symptoms of eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to explore the moderating role of emotional intelligence (EI) in the relationship between self-esteem and eating disorders (ED) symptomatology. METHOD: A battery of online questionnaires was administered to a sample of 516 adults including university students and a community population. The sample, age range of 18-77 years (X = 38.90; SD = 14.76), was made up of 63% women and 32% men. RESULTS: EI moderated the association between self-esteem and ED symptomatology for the total sample. However, a gender-specific analysis showed that the moderation effect was onl

Do caregivers' personality and emotional intelligence modify their perception of relationship and communication with people with aphasia?

BACKGROUND: There is a wide agreement that family and friends of people with aphasia (PWA) can play a crucial role in the rehabilitation of interpersonal communication. Therefore, speech and language therapists (SLTs) should include family and friends in the process of therapy. However, little has been said about the role of caregivers of severely disabled PWA in the rehabilitation of communication functions. AIMS: To examine how caregivers of severely disabled PWA perceive their relationship and communication with PWA, how they facilitate communication with PWA, and whether the caregiver's p

Gambling control self-efficacy as a mediator of the effects of low emotional intelligence on problem gambling.

This study investigated whether lower emotional intelligence would be related to less self-efficacy to control gambling and more problem gambling and whether gambling self-efficacy would mediate the relationship between emotional intelligence and problem gambling. A total of 117 participants, including 49 women and 68 men, with an average age of 39.93 (SD = 13.87), completed an emotional intelligence inventory, a gambling control self-efficacy scale, and a measure of problem gambling. Lower emotional intelligence was related to lower gambling self-efficacy and more problem gambling. Gambling c

The influence of emotional labor and emotional intelligence on cesarean section decision-making among midwives and obstetricians in Kosovo: A cross-sectional study using conjoint analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cesarean section rates continue to increase worldwide. In 2021, one in every five deliveries was delivered by cesarean section. This is particularly alarming in resource-limited countries such as Kosovo, where the rates continue to increase and vary considerably between hospitals. Understanding the underlying factors that drive the increase and variation of cesarean section rates may help to change these trends. This study investigates how emotional intelligence and emotional labor impact cesarean section decision-making among midwives and obstetricians in Kosovo, along with clin

Can Peer Victimization Invalidate the Positive Effect of Emotional Intelligence on Adolescents' Health-Related Quality of Life?

BACKGROUND: Emotional intelligence (EI) is a key factor in adolescents' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Previous research has shown that higher EI is associated with better HRQoL outcomes. However, its protective role may be weakened by adverse experiences such as peer victimization. This study examined whether forms of peer victimization moderate the relationship between EI and specific HRQoL dimensions. METHODS: A total of 1427 Spanish adolescents completed a survey-based assessment, including validated measures of victimization (APRI-Bullying), HRQoL (KIDSCREEN-52), and EI (TMMS-24

Perceived stress as mediator on the relationship between emotional intelligence and life satisfaction among low-income Malaysians.

Perceived stress is one of the key psychological factors that influence overall life satisfaction. Low-income individuals are among those who consistently face stress. Emotional intelligence is known to reduce stress and improved wellbeing, yet limited research has been done among low-income populations. This study examined whether perceived stress mediates the relationship between emotional intelligence and life satisfaction among low-income adults in Malaysia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among participants recruited from a public primary healthcare clinic. The study inclusion crite
