Neural mechanisms of emotion regulation in childhood anxiety.

BACKGROUND: The present study was designed to examine the cortical processes that mediate cognitive regulation in response to emotion-eliciting stimuli in anxious children. METHODS: Electroencephalographic (EEG) activity was recorded from clinically anxious children (n = 29) and typically developing children (n = 34). Event-related potential components were recorded while children performed a go/no-go task using facial stimuli depicting angry, calm, and happy expressions. RESULTS: Anxious children had significantly greater posterior P1 and frontal N2 amplitudes, components associated with at

Deficits in emotion regulation associated with pathological gambling.

OBJECTIVES: The concept of emotion regulation features in many models of psychopathology and it has been proposed that individuals with poorly regulated emotions often engage in maladaptive behaviours to escape from or down-regulate their emotions, creating risk for a range of disorders. One such disorder may be pathological gambling. To our knowledge, no study had assessed the use of emotion-regulation strategies in this population. The goal of the present study was therefore to examine emotion-regulation difficulties among a sample of pathological gamblers (n= 56), a mixed clinical compariso

Emotion regulation in depression: relation to cognitive inhibition.

Depression is a disorder of impaired emotion regulation. Consequently, examining individual differences in the habitual use of emotion regulation strategies has considerable potential to inform models of this debilitating disorder. The aim of the current study was to identify cognitive processes that may be associated with the use of emotion regulation strategies and to elucidate their relation to depression. Depression has been found to be associated with difficulties in cognitive control and, more specifically, with difficulties inhibiting the processing of negative material. We used a negat

Emotion Regulation Processes Related to Emotional Symptoms and Their Severity in a Clinical Primary Care Sample.

Emotion regulation (ER) processes have been studied as factors for the development and treatment of emotional disorders (EDs). The aim of this descriptive study was to determine how worry, rumination, negative metacognition, cognitive biases, and adaptive ER strategies contribute to the change in specific ED symptoms and their severity in a sample of adult primary care patients (N = 139). Different self-reported instruments were applied to assess symptoms and the use of the aforementioned ER processes. To analyse the data, Spearman correlations and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to examine rel

Emotional Labour in Psychotherapy: A Scoping Review of How Therapists Regulate Emotions in Clinical Practice.

Emotional labour is an integral yet conceptually underexamined feature of psychotherapeutic work. This scoping review mapped how emotional labour has been conceptualized and operationalized among psychotherapists, along with the associated outcomes and factors linked to greater emotional burden, and potential protective resources. Following JBI and PRISMA-ScR guidance, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Scopus were searched in August 2025 and updated in April 2026 for peer-reviewed studies on emotional labour among professionals delivering psychotherapy published in English or Spanish. Two reviewers

Associations Among in-The-Moment Emotional Clarity, Emotion Regulation, and Psychopathology in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Past research showed that lower emotional clarity (EC) was associated with more maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) and psychopathology, such as obsessive-compulsive (OC) disorder (OCD). However, most of these studies used single time-point, retrospective self-reports. Next to high risk for recall biases and low ecological validity, this assessment method is only able to capture between-person differences (i.e., individuals generally high vs. low in EC). It therefore neglects temporal variations in EC and resulting within-person differences (i.e., moments with higher-than-usual vs. lower-than-

A neurocognitive theory of flexible emotion control: The role of the lateral frontal pole in emotion regulation.

Emotion regulation is essential to survive in a world full of challenges with rapidly changing contextual demands. The ability to flexibly shift between different emotional control strategies is critical to successfully deal with these demands. Recently, decision neuroscience has shown the importance of monitoring alternative control strategies. However, this insight has not been incorporated into current neurocognitive models of emotional control. Here, we integrate insights from decision and affective sciences into a novel viewpoint on emotion control, the Flexible Emotion Control Theory (FE

Is Negative Emotion Differentiation Associated With Emotion Regulation Choice? Investigations at the Person and Day Level.

Negative emotion differentiation (ED) has been suggested to be important for adaptive emotion regulation (ER). However, knowledge concerning how ED may impact specific ER strategy choice remains surprisingly sparse. We therefore investigated (1) if person-level negative ED was associated with habitual use of individual ER strategies, (2) how person-level negative ED was associated with daily use of individual ER strategies, and finally (3) how within-person daily fluctuations in negative ED were associated with daily use of individual ER strategies. During a 10-day experience sampling study, 9

Emotional Eating in Adolescence: Effects of Emotion Regulation, Weight Status and Negative Body Image.

Emotional eating is associated with an increased risk of binge eating, eating in the absence of hunger and obesity risk. While previous studies with children and adolescents suggest that emotion regulation may be a key predictor of this dysregulated eating behavior, little is known about what other factors may be influencing the link between emotional regulation and emotional eating in adolescence. This multi-method longitudinal study (n = 138) utilized linear regression models to examine associations between childhood emotion regulation, adolescent weight status and negative body image, and e

Positive emotion in distress as a potentially effective emotion regulation strategy for depression: A preliminary investigation.

OBJECTIVES: Emotion regulation utilizing positive emotion during negative emotional states might be one of the effective ways to alleviate depression and anxiety problems among people with emotional disorders. This study examined the psychometric properties and incremental validity of the Positive Emotion In Distress Scale (PEIDS), a newly developed self-report scale, in a sample of university students in Japan. DESIGN AND METHODS: To examine the psychometric properties of the PEIDS, the scale was completed by Japanese university students (396 men and 363 women; mean age of 19.92). Participan

Preschool children's views on emotion regulation: Functional associations and implications for social-emotional adjustment.

Previous studies show that preschool children view negative emotions as susceptible to intentional control. However, the extent of this understanding and links with child social-emotional adjustment are poorly understood. To examine this, 62 3- and 4-year-olds were presented with puppet scenarios in which characters experienced anger, sadness, and fear. Forty-seven adults were presented with a parallel questionnaire. Participants rated the degree to which six emotion-regulation strategies were effective in decreasing negative emotions. Results showed that even the youngest preschoolers viewed

Body, Emotions, and Hormones: A Systematic Review of Body Dissatisfaction, Emotion Regulation, and Puberty in Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Body dissatisfaction often arises from a discrepancy between perceived and ideal body images, posing a risk for psychological issues like depression and eating pathologies, particularly during adolescence. Puberty's rapid physical changes may exacerbate the feeling of dissatisfaction, additionally pubertal changes also influence cognitive processes, such as emotion regulation. This study aimed to map the relationships of puberty, emotion regulation, and body dissatisfaction to advance a developmentally informed theory of body dissatisfaction and enhance possibilities for future inte

Cognitive appraisal, emotional responses, and emotion regulation in firefighters' occupational stress-A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Firefighting is a highly demanding profession, involving frequent exposure to stress and life-threatening situations. This pilot study investigates firefighters' cognitive and emotional responses underlying problem-solving and emotion regulation during stressful operations. It explores how and to what extent firefighters experience their thoughts and emotions, focusing on subjective experiences of valence and physiological arousal, and whether they perceive their thoughts and emotions as helpful or hindrances. Additionally, we examine habitual emotion regulation strategies, accou

Interpersonal emotion regulation and emotional adjustment in adolescence: Directional associations and strategy-specific effects.

BACKGROUND: Previous theories and empirical studies suggest that interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) and specific IER strategies are closely linked to emotional adjustment. However, reciprocal associations among these constructs have rarely been examined while accounting for the temporal stability, and the existing evidence remains mixed. Using random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPM), this study examined within-person bidirectional associations between IER and emotional adjustment (depressive symptoms and life satisfaction) among Chinese early adolescents. This study then inves

Emotion regulation mediates the relation between intolerance of uncertainty and emotion difficulties: A longitudinal investigation.

Intolerance of uncertainty has been proposed as a transdiagnostic factor in emotional disorders. Despite comprehensive empirical evidence demonstrating the association between intolerance of uncertainty and emotional disorders, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Drawing on theoretical frameworks and empirical studies, the current study proposed that emotion regulation emerges as a potential mechanism. We explored the connections among intolerance of uncertainty, eight emotion regulation strategies (both adaptive and maladaptive), and emotional difficulties (specifically anxiety and depr
