Cytological features of inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of spleen: A case report.

Here, we present the first cytological report of a primary splenic inflammatory pseudotumor-like follicular dendritic cell sarcoma. The 57 year-old male was incidentally found with a 2.2 cm well-demarcated splenic nodule. A sonography guided fine needle aspiration of the lesion was performed. The cytologic smears revealed loosely cohesive fragments of oval to spindle cells in a background of prominent lymphoplasmacytic infiltration. The cells showed sparse chromatin, distinct nucleoli, syncytial cell borders, and occasional cytoplasmic processes. On the liquid-based preparation, several histio

Autoimmune hepatitis, one disease with many faces: etiopathogenetic, clinico-laboratory and histological characteristics.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an unresolving progressive liver disease of unknown etiology characterized by hypergammaglobulinemia, autoantibodies detection and interface hepatitis. Due to the absence of specific diagnostic markers and the large heterogeneity of its clinical, laboratory and histological features, AIH diagnosis may be potentially difficult. Therefore, in this in-depth review we summarize the substantial progress on etiopathogenesis, clinical, serological and histological phenotypes of AIH. AIH has a global distribution affecting any age, both sexes and all ethnic groups. Clinic

Orbital masses as a rare presentation of Rosai-Dorfman disease: Clinicopathologic characterization of five cases.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare, non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Most cases present with marked, non-tender lymphadenopathy due to the proliferation of atypical histiocytes. A minority of cases involves extranodal sites and can present as bone lesions, skin rashes, pulmonary nodules, and rarely orbital masses. Orbital involvement in RDD is rare and may infrequently present as an isolated tumor mass without lymphadenopathy. This study aims to better characterize this uncommon presentation of this rare disease. Five cases of orbital RDD were identified from the last 18 years and the cli

Cutaneous Rosai-Dorfman disease with MAP2K1 mutation, initially mimicking an infection with parasitized histiocytes.

Rarely, Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) manifests exclusively in the skin, typically as nodules on the trunk and extremities. Recognition of characteristic histopathologic features enables diagnosis of RDD. A 55-year-old female presented with a 7-year history of cutaneous nodules involving the trunk and extremities. A prior skin biopsy specimen at a different institution had demonstrated a dense dermal lymphohistiocytic infiltrate with histiocytes containing GMS+ forms, favored to represent cryptococcal organisms, with a differential diagnosis including other infections with parasitized histiocyte

Rosai-Dorfman disease of the cauda equina: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare, nonmalignant histiocytosis. It typically occurs in lymph nodes, skin, and soft tissues, but numerous reports of central nervous system involvement exist in the literature. The peripheral nervous system has rarely been involved. In this study, the authors present a case of RDD isolated to the cauda equina. The presentation, management, surgical technique, and adjunctive treatment strategy are described. OBSERVATIONS: A 31-year-old female presented with 6 months of progressive left lower-extremity numbness involving the lateral aspect of the fo

Fungi in megakaryocytes. An unusual manifestation of fungal infection of the bone marrow.

When fungi infect the bone marrow, typically they are associated with granuloma formation and/or necrosis, and the fungi are found within histiocytes or admixed with necrotic debris. Recently two bone marrow biopsy specimens were encountered in which fungi were confined to the cytoplasm of megakaryocytes, a finding not previously reported in the literature. The first case was that of a 46-year-old man with pulmonary histoplasmosis and no known immunodeficiency. The second was that of a 38-year-old man with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome and cryptococcal meningitis. In the first case,

Facial cutaneous Rosai-Dorfman disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a form of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis in which the activated histiocytes of the lymph nodes and other organs begin to accumulate following excessive production. Bilateral, massive, and painless lymphadenopathy are classic presentations. Systemic RDD is already known to be a rare condition, but isolated cutaneous RDD is extremely rare. We presented a rare and unusual presentations of a disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old Thai female with a 6-month history of a small acne-like lesion that rapidly progressed to 5 cm tumor-like lesions on the

Atypical Case of Rosai-Dorfman Disease of the Lacrimal Gland with Adjacent Bone Erosion.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare, self-limited disorder of unknown etiology that affects children and young adults worldwide and typically manifests as chronic, painless cervical lymphadenopathy. Orbital involvement is very rare and may be an isolated extranodal manifestation or associated with concurrent systemic disease. Adjacent bone involvement is most exceptional, and secondary optic neuropathy has never been reported. METHODS: This is a case report with review of the literature. RESULTS: We present a 32-year-old man who, over a 3-month period, developed worsening

Asymptomatic flow of Rosai-Dorfman disease.

INTRODUCTION: Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy is a rare benign self-limiting disease of unknown etiology. The salivary gland involvement, indicating the extranodal character of the disease, often presents a diagnostic dilemma requiring immunohistochemical staining of surgically removed tumor to confirm the diagnosis. CASE REPORT: We report a 43-year-old man presented with an asymptomatic mass in the left mandibular angle. On physical examination, the lesion was described as a painless, mobile, firm-elastic consistency nodule, which measured 4 x 3 cm in diameter, with normal o

Rosai-Dorfman disease in an Asian Indian woman with classic generalized lymphadenopathy and nasal obstruction: a case report.

Rosai-Dorfman disease is rare. When it does occur, it usually affects children, and it has a propensity for whites and blacks as opposed to members of other races. We report the case of a 45-year-old Asian Indian woman who presented with painful masses in the area of the axillary, cervical, and inguinal lymph nodes. She had a decade-long history of tonic-clonic seizures and a recent history of digestive complaints and progressive nasal stuffiness. Endoscopic examination of the left nasal cavity revealed the presence of submucosal bulges along the septum and the lateral wall; hypertrophy of the

Clinicopathological Features and Expression of CD30, OCT2, and Cyclin D1 in Rosai-Dorfman Disease: A Retrospective Case Series.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare sinus histiocytosis characterized by massive lymphadenopathy. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze the clinicopathological features of RDD and the immunohistochemical expression of CD30, OCT2, and cyclin D1. We also compared RDD with reactive sinus histiocytosis (RSH), Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT), and IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) to assess differences in their immunohistochemical profiles. Ten cases of RDD were included; all patients were male, with a median age of 37 years (range: 17

A unique case of isolated thoracic spinal Rosai-Dorfman disease related to IgG4.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare benign histiocytosis usually characterized by massive cervical lymphadenopathy and systemic manifestations. Extranodal, especially spinal involvement, is extremely rare. Our case was deemed worthy of presentation because it was the first reported isolated case of spinal RDD related to IgG4 and mimicked meningioma clinically and radiologically. A case with an intradural extramedullary mass causing neurological compression findings in the thoracic spinal region and radiologically mimicking meningioma is presented. In the histomorphological examination of the

Rosai-Dorfman disease affecting the maxilla.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), formerly called sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, is a non-neoplastic proliferative histiocytic disorder with behavior ranging from highly aggressive to spontaneous remission. Although the lymph nodes are more commonly involved, any organ can be affected. This study aimed to describe the features and the follow-up of a case of extranodal RDD. Our patient was a 39-year-old woman who was referred with an 11-month history of pain in the right maxilla. On clinical examination, some upper right teeth presented full mobility with normal appearance of the

Polypoid intranasal mass caused by Rosai-Dorfman disease: a diagnostic pitfall.

BACKGROUND: Rosai-Dorfman disease is a rare, idiopathic, histiocytic proliferative disorder with a distinctive microscopic appearance, which was formerly thought to be a disease process limited to lymph nodes. However, extranodal involvement has been documented in less than half of the reported patients, but rarely without associated lymphadenopathy. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 43-year-old Senegalese woman who presented with a polypoid, intranasal mass caused by Rosai-Dorfman disease. A diagnosis of a granulomatous process, including rhinoscleroma, was initially discussed. The correc

Histo- and immunomorphometry of megakaryopoiesis in chronic myeloid leukemia with myelofibrosis and so-called primary (idiopathic) osteo-myelofibrosis/-sclerosis.

A morphometric study was performed on trephine biopsies of bone marrow in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) accompanied by myelofibrosis and in so-called primary (idiopathic) osteomyelofibrosis/-sclerosis (OMF) to evaluate distinctive features of megakaryopoiesis. The periodic acid Schiff reaction (PAS) and a monoclonal antibody against glycoprotein IIIa were employed for the identification of megakaryocytes including precursor cells and Gomori's silver impregnation to determine the density of argyrophilic fibers. All patients with CML revealed a slight to moderate degree of medulla

A rare case of facial cutaneous Rosai-Dorfman disease clinically mimicking basal cell carcinoma followed by multiple myeloma after 2 years.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis disorder characterized by the proliferation of histiocytes within the lymph nodes. Extranodal involvement can occur; however, only 10% of extranodal RDD involve the skin. We present a unique case of a 66-year-old woman with cutaneous RDD followed by the development of multiple myeloma (MM). To our knowledge, this is only the second reported case where RDD preceded a diagnosis of MM, with the first documented instance occurring in 2018. The patient presented to the dermatology clinic with a 5-year history of painless, solit

Trametinib for a child with refractory Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes disease harboring a novel somatic mutation in MAP2K1.

Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytosis characterized by accumulation of S100 + , CD68 + , and CD1a- histiocytes, with emperipolesis. It occurs predominantly in black adolescents and young adults, but rarely in Japanese children. Recently, oncogenic mutations in mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway genes were reported in 30-50% of patients with RDD, and several studies have described treatment of adult patients with MAPK inhibitors. Here, we present the case of a Japanese boy with refractory RDD without signs of cardiofaciocutaneous (CFC) syndrome who harbored

A Case of Extranodal Rosai-Dorfman Disease Presenting as an Isolated Mass on the Base of the Tongue in a 57-Year-old Woman.

BACKGROUND Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), is a rare, benign, proliferative, histiocytic disorder characterized by persistent massive lymphadenopathy, which mimics malignant tumors. Diagnosis of extranodal RDD without lymphadenopathy is difficult due to its unusual clinical manifestation and lack of typical histopathologic features. Hence, it requires both a high degree of clinical suspicion and careful histopathologic examination. CASE REPORT A 57-year-old woman presented with an isolated mass on the base of the tongue (BOT) without lymphadenopathy. Laryngoscopic examination revealed a mass on t

Retroperitoneal epithelioid angiomyolipoma leading to fatal outcome.

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma (AML) is a newly established variant of AML, characterized by monomorphous epithelioid cells that show HMB-45 immunopositivity, and it often displays aggressive behavior. To date, they have mostly appeared in the kidneys; however, the present autopsy case of a 43-year-old female without the stigmata of tuberous sclerosis complex had a huge retroperitoneal mass, accompanied by involvement of the regional lymph nodes. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of round, polygonal or short spindle-shaped monomorphous cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and large
