Encephalitozoonosis infection in a traditional rabbit farm with neurological manifestations.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi, a zoonotic and opportunistic pathogen, can cause latent infection, especially in lagomorphs. Nowadays, this member of the Eukaryotes has drawn significant attention in the fields of veterinary and public health. The purpose of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of infection in a New Zealand rabbit farm that has a clinical history of neurological manifestations including head tilt ataxia, aggressiveness, seizures, and circling and rotational movements around the body length axis, but the general conditions and food intake were normal. Blood samples were tak

Experimental encephalitozoonosis in the blue fox. Neonatal exposure to the parasite.

Newborn and young pups up to the age of 15 days were exposed to E. cuniculi, either by keeping the pups in cages together with orally inoculated foster-mothers and their offspring, or by oral inoculation with E. cuniculi spores. A majority of pups appeared sero-positive to E. cuniculi with the india-ink immuno-reaction from 35 to 87 days post exposure; spores of E. cuniculi were detected in organs of some of the animals. The non-inoculated pups kept together with the orally inoculated pups became seropositive from 49 to 129 days after the oral inoculations. However, the exposure of newborn and

Fox encephalitozoonosis: isolation of the agent from an outbreak in farmed blue foxes (Alopex lagopus) in Finland and some hitherto unreported pathologic lesions.

The farmed blue fox (Alopex lagopus) is particularly susceptible to congenital infections of the microsporidian species Encephalitozoon cuniculi. This report is based on an outbreak of the disease in Finland with high mortality. Five pups (four males and one female) with prolonged disease were examined. The pups had moderate pathological alterations in the kidneys and mild lesions were found in the brains, hearts, salivary and prostatic glands. Diagnosis of E. cuniculi infection was made from serological tests (ELISA, CIA, IFAT), and by in vitro isolation of the parasite from the brain of all

Prevalence of intestinal parasites in Cuban acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients.

A coproparasitological study was carried out on 67 acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients admitted at the Institute of Tropical Medicine 'Pedro Kouri'. The results were compared with 136 HIV-seronegative patients (control group) who were also hospitalised in the same period. In both groups monoparasitism was more prevalent than polyparasitism and intestinal protozoa were more prevalent than helminths. At least one intestinal parasite was found in 34 (51%) of the 67 AIDS patients and in 65 (48%) of the control group patients. Intestinal coccidia were only detected in AIDS patients;

Microsporidia in the small intestine of HIV-infected patients. A new diagnostic technique and a new species.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether microsporidian infections occur in Australian patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), to assess the incidence, and to discuss microscopic detection methods. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: 180 consecutive HIV-infected patients (109 with chronic diarrhoea and 71 with other indications) underwent upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy and pinch biopsies of the second part of the duodenum. The biopsies were handled by a protocol: four levels, with haematoxylin and eosin stain (H&E) at each level, periodic acid Schiff reagent after diastase (DiPAS) and aur

[Systemic microsporidiosis and toxoplasmosis in a patient with T prolymphocytic leukemia].

We report a case of microsporidiosis in a 72-year-old woman presenting with prolymphocytic leukemia. The underlying conditions 7 months after leukemia was diagnosed were pancytopenia and immunosuppression due to alemtuzumab and pentostatin. The patient's status had worsened and she presented with dysuria. Urine cultures for bacteria were repeatedly negative. She was first empirically treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. Three months later, urinary symptoms were persisting. Her blood lymphocyte count was 90/microl. Urine examination was positive for microsporidia using modified trichrome st

Intracellular pathogen targeting by IL32 elicits cell-autonomous immunity.

Interferon-γ safeguards humans against intracellular pathogens, yet how most interferon-stimulated genes protect host cells, and how human-adapted pathogens evade these defenses is unclear 1,2 . Here, we discover a potent immune surveillance and effector circuit executed by an intracellularly acting cytokine, IL32, that targets and restricts phylogenetically distinct vacuolar pathogens, including the bacterium Chlamydia and the microsporidian Encephalitozoon . Quantitative proteomics coupled to a tailored CRISPR screen, uncovered components of the cysteine/Arg N-degron pathway 3 that modify IL

Acute renal injury from thrombotic microangiopathy associated with enteritis in New Zealand white rabbits.

Over a 3-y period, 12 adult New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits were presented for postmortem examination following variably long periods of inappetence and soft-to-liquid stool production. Postmortem findings included serosanguineous fluid in abdominal and thoracic cavities, dark-red-to-white renal foci, reddened intestinal serosa, and pulmonary edema. Microscopically, mesangial changes and thrombi were observed in renal glomeruli, and mild-to-severe enteritis was observed. These findings resemble hemolytic uremic syndrome, which typically follows enterocolitis associated with Shiga toxin (Stx)-p

Survey on the Presence of Bacterial and Parasitic Zoonotic Agents in the Feces of Wild Birds.

Wild avifauna may act as fecal source of bacterial and parasitic pathogens for other birds and mammals. Most of these pathogens have a relevant impact on human and livestock health which may cause severe disease and economic loss. In the present study, the fecal samples collected from 121 wild birds belonging to 15 species of the genera Anas, Tadorna, Fulica, Arddea, Larus, Falco, Athene, Accipiter, and Columba were submitted to bacteriological and molecular analyses to detect Brucella spp., Coxiella burnetii, Mycobacterium spp., Salmonella spp., Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia spp., and microsp

Glomerulosclerosis and hyalinosis in rabbits.

Histological appearances of remnant kidney in female New Zealand white rabbits undergoing left nephrectomy at 6 mths were studied. All 20 rabbits had evidence of previous Encephalitozoon cuniculi (E. cuniculi) infection. Half of the 10 uninephrectomized and 10 control animals completed 3 pregnancies before sacrifice (15 mths). Twelve of 30 kidneys at sacrifice showed focal and segmental hyalinosis and sclerosis (FSHS), a lesion not previously reported in rabbits. Four of 5 kidneys in both uninephrectomized pregnant and uninephrectomized virgin animals showed FSHS compared with 2 of 10 in both

Clinicopathologic findings and causes of mortality in 100 pet rabbits from the Canary Islands, Spain, 2011-2022.

The European domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus) is commonly kept as a pet, with increasing popularity among pet owners. Despite the increasing body of information on lagomorph medicine and pathology, comprehensive published compilations of causes of mortality in pet rabbits are limited. We analyzed health disorders, pathology findings, and most probable causes of death in 100 pet rabbits submitted to the Anatomopathological Diagnostic Service of the Veterinary School of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain, from 2011 to 2022. We reviewed clinical

Molecular Diagnosis of Microsporidia among Immunocompromised Patients in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasitic fungi causing chronic diarrhea, particularly among immunocompromised patients. The current method used for diagnosis is based on conventional microscopy, which does not differentiate parasites at the species level. The present study was carried out to identify microsporidian species in immunocompromised patients. From March 2016 to March 2017, a total of 289 archived stool samples were examined microscopically for microsporidian spores using Gram-chromotrope Kinyoun (GCK) stain. Positive stool samples by microscopy were subjected to polymerase

Three Cases of Neurologic Syndrome Caused by Donor-Derived Microsporidiosis.

In April 2014, a kidney transplant recipient in the United States experienced headache, diplopia, and confusion, followed by neurologic decline and death. An investigation to evaluate the possibility of donor-derived infection determined that 3 patients had received 4 organs (kidney, liver, heart/kidney) from the same donor. The liver recipient experienced tremor and gait instability; the heart/kidney and contralateral kidney recipients were hospitalized with encephalitis. None experienced gastrointestinal symptoms. Encephalitozoon cuniculi was detected by tissue PCR in the central nervous sys

[PCR for detection and characterization of parasites (Leishmania, Echinococcus, Microsporodia, Giardia)].

The application of PCR for the diagnosis and the characterisation of parasites is discussed using four examples. (1) A PCR assay that was developed for the detection of Leishmania was shown to be as highly sensitive as in vitro cultivation of the parasites from lymph node aspirates and bone marrow biopsies. (2) Single eggs of Echinococcus multilocularis can principally be detected and identified by PCR. However, a cumbersome sample preparation is inevitable in order to remove PCR-inhibitory substances present in fox faeces. (3) Analysis of the amplified SSU rRNA gene of Encephalitozoon-like is

Microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in an immunocompetent patient with a past history of laser in situ keratomilieusis surgery.

Ocular infection with microsporidia has been documented in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. Sources and mode of human infection with microsporidia have been difficult to ascertain although exposure to water may be an important risk factor. Of four genera that have been reported in human disease, only the genera Nosema, Encephalitozoon and Septata are documented to cause ocular infection. Here, in our case a healthy 30-year-old man who had undergone bilateral laser in situ keratomilieusis surgery two and half years back presented with a 10-day history of redness and 4-day hi

Parasite Fauna and Coinfections in Urban Rats Naturally Infected by the Zoonotic Parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

When the zoonotic parasite of rodents that can cause human neuroangiostrongyliasis, i.e., Angiostrongylus cantonensis, is found in its natural definitive hosts, it is usually reported in isolation, as if the rat lungworm were the only component of its parasite community. In this study, we report the coinfections found in rats naturally infected by A. cantonensis in urban populations of Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus in Valencia, Spain. In addition to the rat lungworms, which were found in 14 of the 125 rats studied (a prevalence of 11.20%), 18 other parasite species (intestinal and tissul
