A 3-year-old female neutered Staffordshire Bull Terrier presented with a mixed germ cell tumor involving the base of the iris and the ciliary body of the right eye. The tumor mass was composed primarily of packeted vacuolated, polygonal (hepatoid) cells and small round cells; epithelial cells lining tubuloacinar structures were a less prominent component. The hepatoid and round cells stained positively for alpha-fetoprotein and cytokeratin. The epithelial cells stained positively for cytokeratin only, and some contained cytoplasmic mucin droplets. The polygonal cells were interpreted as a hepa

Combined treatment with preoperative chemotherapy and surgical resection is the universally accepted effective treatment of mediastinal yolk sac tumors. However, a problem on the need and efficacy of lymph node dissection in mediastinal yolk sac tumors has been not enough discussed in the past. We reported a case of mediastinal yolk sac tumor with nodal metastasis. As described in this paper, the resection of the primary lesion including the regional lymph nodes en bloc should be recommended for mediastinal yolk sac tumors.

We report on an infant with Weaver syndrome, neoplasia and cardiovascular anomalies. Stage 4S neuroblastoma underwent spontaneous resolution. Three neoplasms have been reported in Weaver syndrome: another stage 4S neuroblastoma [Muhonen and Menezes, 1990: J Pediatr 116:596-599], an ovarian endodermal sinus tumor [Derry et al., 1999: J Med Genet 36:725-728], and a sacrococcygeal teratoma [Kelly et al., 2000: Am J Med Genet 95:492-495]. No case was associated with cardiovascular anomalies. Our patient had VSD and PDA, and although several other patients with Weaver syndrome have had cardiovascul

BACKGROUND: As a rare tumor, yolk sac tumor is a type of neoplasm that appears like the yolk sac, extraembryonic mesenchyme, and allantois. The mediastinum is the second most frequent area after the gonadal area.
CASE REPORT: We present an extremely rare case of 15 years old boy with mediastinal yolk sac tumor. The boy came with the chief complaint of swelling of the neck and face. Computed tomography scan of the chest revealed bulky mass with a cystic component that infiltrated the heart. The diagnosis of mediastinal yolk sac tumor was made after core needle biopsy. Histopathologic analysis

Primary intracranial germ cell tumors are rare and usually localized in the pineal and the suprasellar regions. They are divided into the following histologic types: germinoma, teratoma (mature, immature, malignant), choriocarcinoma, embryonal carcinoma, endodermal sinus tumor (yolk sac tumor), and mixed tumors. Clinically, they are manifested with ocular signs or signs of obstructive hydrocephalus. Localized germinomas are treated with radiation therapy and exhibit a relatively good prognosis. Chemotherapy is reserved for disseminated germinomas. Mature teratomas are treated with surgery. The

Teratoid hepatoblastoma (HB) is a variant of mixed HB described as having a mixture of heterologous components. A 3-year-old boy presented for a liver transplant evaluation due to persistent HB. His liver was biopsied as well as a perirenal mass. Histologic examination demonstrated elements of yolk sac tumor and review of original resection showed a neuroendocrine component. This unique combination of histology has not been reported before in HB. Also, this case presents a unique diagnostic challenge as it presented with a metastasis containing yolk sac elements. Two cases of malignant mediastinal germ-cell tumor are reported. Case 1 is a 20-month-old girl with endodermal sinus tumor (EST) and is, to our best knowledge, the third female pediatric case of mediastinal EST in the literature. Case 2 is a 15-year-old boy with malignant teratoma (mature teratoma with poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma). Both cases were treated by primary combination chemotherapy of vincristine, actinomycin D, and cyclophosphamide or vinblastine, cisplatin, and bleomycin, secondary operation (complete resection), radiation to the tumor bed, and some courses of cons

Six patients (aged 3-36 mo) with vaginal tumors (rhabdomyosarcoma and endodermal sinus tumor [EST]; n = 3 each) received intraarterial chemotherapy (IAC) and intravenous chemotherapy. Patients underwent internal iliac artery infusion with cisplatin, pirarubicin, and vindesine. Intravenous chemotherapy with vindesine, ifosfamide, and etoposide was administered after 3 weeks. Vaginal tumors disappeared in all patients after 2 or 3 cycles of alternating therapy. Two patients underwent resection of pelvic metastases. Intravenous consolidation chemotherapy was applied. Four patients were disease-fr

Introduction: Yolk sac tumor (YST) is a malignant germ cell tumor with 10-15% arising in extragonadal sites. Methods: A search through our institution's database from January 01, 1990, to December 31, 2020, for "yolk sac tumor" or "endodermal sinus tumor" and "liver". Results: Our search yielded three cases. A 20-month-old girl with a liver mass and serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level of 46558.0 ng/mL. The neoplasm was papillary with Schiller-Duval bodies. A 2-year-old boy with hepatic masses and adrenal mass with a serum AFP of 106,604.5 ng/mL. Numerous Schiller-Duval bodies were present. A 7

A 5-year-old conjoined twin girl had a yolk sac tumor of the right ovary. She was admitted to our hospital because of abdominal distension. Comprehensive clinical and radiological investigations revealed a tumor of the right ovary. She underwent right salpingo-oophorectomy. The diagnosis was yolk sac tumor (stage I A), and postoperative chemotherapy (vincristine, actinomycine-D, cyclophosphamide) according to the UK-CCSG was provided. The postoperative course was uneventful with no evidence of recurrence 3 years after surgery. Her twin sister had no tumor. This is the first reported of yolk sa

A 17 month old who had been diagnosed as having testicular feminization syndrome (noted during inguinal herniorrhaphy) was operated on because of an abdominal mass that had a high serum level of alpha-fetoprotein. Histologically, the lesion was a yolk sac tumor. The alpha-fetoprotein level normalized within 2 months of the surgery, through the administration of adjunctive chemotherapy containing cisplatinum. The patient is disease-free 4 years postoperatively. When performing inguinal herniorrhaphy in a girl, the surgeon should be prepared to deal with testicular feminization syndrome. If gona

Hyaline globules of the yolk sac tumor (YST) have been described as homogeneous pink intracellular globules and intercellular basement membrane material [Akhtar et al.: Diagn Cytopathol 1990:6:184-192]. In Diff-Quik-stained air-dried smears of a lung fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of YST metastatic from anterior mediastinum, short curvilinear nonbranching fibrils are demonstrated in the metachromatic hyaline substance. The fibril-containing hyaline substance, which presents as intracellular globules as well as extracellular matrix deposits, is a diagnostic clue for YST with parietal differentiat

Primary mesenteric malignant yolk sac tumor (YST) is clinically rare, with challenges in preoperative diagnosis and poor prognosis. This article reports a case of a 34-year-old female with primary YST originating from the transverse mesocolon. The patient presented with an asymptomatic abdominal mass, markedly elevated AFP (31 252 ng/mL), and imaging findings of a well-circumscribed solid mass. The diagnosis was confirmed via laparoscopic surgical resection and pathological examination. This case aims to explore the multimodal diagnostic strategies, therapeutic controversies, and prognostic ch

BACKGROUND: Yolk sac tumor (YST) is a highly malignant germ cell tumor, a majority of which originate from the gonads and are extremely rare from endometrium.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present a case of a 42-year-old woman suffered from primary pure yolk sac tumor of the endometrium complicated with situs inversus totalis. The patient presented at our hospital with irregular vaginal bleeding. Imageological examination showed a space-occupying lesion in the cervix and the serum Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level was significantly high (more than 1210ng/ml). Then she underwent total hysterectomy, b
