BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol ingestion leads to endotoxemia which is believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). The purpose of this study was to determine if chronic ethanol consumption, in addition to affecting plasma endotoxin and cytokines, also affects the endotoxin-neutralizing capacity (ENC), sCD14, and sICAM-1, in patients with ALD. A second aim was to identify correlations between these latter parameters, endotoxin, and cytokines, especially IL-10.

Volunteers infected with Salmonella typhosa develop a remarkable hyperreactivity to the pyrogenic and subjective toxic activities of homologous (S. typhos) and heterologous (Pseudomonas) endotoxins. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of culturable bacteria, endotoxins (LPS) and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) levels in teeth with normal vital pulp (NVP) with intact crowns (IC) and those with coronal restoration (CR) limited to the enamel level. A total of 20 teeth indicated for endodontic treatment due to prosthetic reasons were selected. Samples were collected from the root canals. Endotoxins are lipopolysaccharides found in the outer membrane of most Gram-negative bacteria and cyanobacteria. Worker exposure to endotoxins has been shown in a number of work situations and is associated with both respiratory and systemic pathologies. Using with the newly modified perchloric acid pretreatment method and endotoxin specific assay (Endospecy), the plasma endotoxin in the patients with liver cirrhosis was investigated. The mean value of plasma endotoxin in control (n = 20) was below 9.8 pg/ml. This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of different irrigants used to remove endotoxins and cultivable microorganisms during endodontic therapy. Forty root canals were contaminated and divided into groups according to the irrigant: 2% NaOCl + surfactant, 2% CHX, 2.5% NaOCl, and pyrogen-free saline solution (control).
