Moderate endurance training has no effect on the parathyroid function of heart transplant patients.

The benefit of retraining for heart transplant recipients (HTR) is now well established. The rehabilitation of these patients can be compromised by osteopenia and bone fractures. The resting levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and exercise-induced increases are higher in HTR than in healthy controls. To evaluate the effect of a moderate endurance training programme on parathyroid activity, six HTR, an average of 18 months after transplant, and seven healthy sedentary controls have been studied. None of the subjects had a history of bone disease. Two exercise tests (square wave endurance exerci

Long-term endurance training alters the hypothalamic-pituitary axes for gonadotropins and growth hormone.

In a prospective fashion we have studied the impact of chronic exercise of two intensities on the hypothalamic-pituitary-end organ axes for gonadotropins and GH in gynecologically mature, previously sedentary women. Physiologic alterations are evident in both axes with a doubling of 24-hour mean serum GH concentrations at 1 year and smaller, transient changes in pulsatile LH release during the first four menstrual cycles. The latter period of physiologic adaptation should be studied more intensively with more frequent exercise evaluation. Perhaps more significant "adaptation to stress" would b

Effects of chronic beta-adrenergic blockade on hemodynamic and metabolic responses to endurance training.

To study the influence of chronic propranolol therapy on hemodynamic and metabolic adaptations associated with endurance training, five dogs given 250 mg X d-1 propranolol therapy (P) and five control dogs (NP) were endurance trained for 7 wk using a continuously increasing treadmill workload. The P group was also evaluated pre- and post-training off the drug (P-OD) to separate drug and training effects. Training lowered mean heart rate score (HR) to a standardized multistage dog treadmill test in the NP and P-OD (P less than 0.05) and had no effect on the HR of the P group while on propranolo

Stimulus-specific functional remodeling of the left ventricle in endurance and resistance-trained men.

Left ventricular (LV) structural remodeling following athletic training has been evidenced through training-specific changes in wall thickness and geometry. Whether the LV response to changes in hemodynamic load also adapts in a training-specific manner is unknown. Using echocardiography, we examined LV responses of endurance-trained (n = 15), resistance-trained (n = 14), and nonathletic men (n = 13) to 1) 20, 40, and 60% one repetition-maximum (1RM), leg-press exercise and 2) intravascular Gelofusine infusion (7 mL/kg) with passive leg raise. Inspiratory muscle performance in endurance-trained elderly males during incremental exercise.

The aim of this study was to compare the inspiratory muscle performance during an incremental exercise of twelve fit old endurance-trained athletes (OT) with that of fit young athletes (YT) and healthy age-matched controls (OC). The tension-time index (TT0.1) was determined according to the equation TT0.1=P0.1/PImax×ti/ttot, where P0.1 is the mouth occlusion pressure, PImax the maximal inspiratory pressure and ti/ttot the duty cycle. For a given VCO2, OT group displayed P0.1, P0.1/PImax ratio, TT0.1 and effective impedance of the respiratory muscle values which were lower than OC group and hig

Heart rate at 4 s after the onset of exercise in endurance-trained men.

It has been suggested that the increase in heart rate (HR) at the onset of exercise is caused by vagal withdrawal. In fact, endurance runners show a lower HR in maximum aerobic tests. However, it is still unknown whether endurance runners have a lower HR at 4 s after the onset of exercise (4th-sec-HR). We sought to measure the HR at the onset of the 4 s exercise test (4-sET), clarifying its relationship to heart rate variability (HRV), spectral indices, and cardiac vagal index (CVI) in endurance runners (ER) and healthy untrained controls (CON). HR at 4th-sec-HR, CVI, and percent HR increase d

Effects of moderate intensity endurance training and high-intensity interval training on the reproductive parameters of wistar rats overfed in infancy.

Studies indicate that rapid weight gain at critical development stages, such as the lactation period, is associated with the development of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes in the long term. In addition to metabolic changes during adulthood, overweight/obesity may influence reproductive function. Human and animal studies suggest that lifestyle changes through exercise and/or controlled diet result in improved semen quality in obese individuals. However, the relationship between exercise volume/intensity and reproductive capacity effects remains inconclusive. The present study aim

Effects of combined muscle power and endurance training with different volumes on functional and hemodynamic parameters in previously trained older adults.

BACKGROUND: To promote optimal neuromuscular and cardiovascular gains in older adults, it seems crucial to investigate the effects of different combined training volumes in this population. Thus, the present study aimed to compare the effects of combined muscle power training (MPT) and endurance training (ET) with different volumes on functional and hemodynamic parameters in previously trained older adults. METHODS: Twenty-five older adults were randomly assigned to either the lower-volume group (LVG; n = 13) or the higher-volume group (HVG; n = 12). In the LVG, participants performed 1 set o

Endurance training attenuates acute exercise-induced monocyte transcriptomic responses in adolescents: sex-specific molecular adaptations.

Circulating monocytes contribute to atherogenesis and vascular dysfunction. Although clinical cardiovascular disease presents in adulthood, its biological origins often begin in youth and differ substantially between females and males. Twelve males and nine females (13-17 yr) completed an acute exercise protocol consisting of 10, 2-min cycling bouts at 70% of maximal work rate interspersed with 1-min rest intervals, performed before and after an 8-wk supervised endurance training intervention with brief supplementary strength work (60 min/session, 3 sessions/wk). Blood was collected before and

Free essential amino acid feeding improves endurance during resistance training via DRP1-dependent mitochondrial remodelling.

BACKGROUND: Loss of muscle strength and endurance with aging or in various conditions negatively affects quality of life. Resistance exercise training (RET) is the most powerful means to improve muscle mass and strength, but it does not generally lead to improvements in endurance capacity. Free essential amino acids (EAAs) act as precursors and stimuli for synthesis of both mitochondrial and myofibrillar proteins that could potentially confer endurance and strength gains. Thus, we hypothesized that daily consumption of a dietary supplement of nine free EAAs with RET improves endurance in addit

Resistance, but not endurance exercise training, induces changes in cerebrovascular function in healthy young subjects.

It is generally considered that regular exercise maintains brain health and reduces the risk of cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke and dementia. Since the benefits of different "types" of exercise are unclear, we sought to compare the impacts of endurance and resistance training on cerebrovascular function. In a randomized and crossover design, 68 young healthy adults were recruited to participate in 3 mo of resistance and endurance training. Cerebral hemodynamics through the internal carotid, vertebral, middle and posterior cerebral arteries were measured using Duplex ultrasound and tran

Skin Temperature, Training Load, and Subjective Muscle Soreness in Junior Endurance Athletes: A Case Study.

CONTEXT: The application of infrared thermography to assess the effects of athletic training is increasing. It is not known if changes in skin temperature (Tsk) as assessed by infrared thermography are affected by the training load or the muscle soreness experienced by the athlete. PURPOSE: To describe the variations in Tsk in body areas affected by running training and examine any relationships with subjective ratings of muscle soreness. The secondary aim was to assess the feasibility of using infrared thermography for assessing training load in 2 junior male middle-distance athletes. METHO

The Association Between Endurance Training and Heart Rate Variability: The Confounding Role of Heart Rate.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a widely used marker of cardiac autonomic nervous activity (CANA). Changes in HRV with exercise training have often been interpreted as increases in vagal activity. HRV is strongly associated with heart rate, which in turn, is associated with heart size. There is strong evidence from basic studies that lower heart rate in response to exercise training is caused by morphological and electrical remodeling of the heart. In a cross-sectional study in participants of a 10 mile race, we investigated the influence of endurance exercise on HRV parameters independently o
