Time-resolved spectroscopy of radiative energy transfer between a conjugated oligomer and polymer in solution.

We report a short investigation of the energy transfer process between the conjugated oligomer 1,4-bis(9-ethyl-3-carbazo-vinylene)-9,9-dihexyl-fluorene (BECV-DHF) and the conjugated polymer poly[2-methoxy-5-(3,7-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene] - end capped with DMP (MDMO-PPV). The radiative energy transfer (RET) process shows a time delay, and the formation of the excimer causes a further delay. All these processes were studied using time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS), which has three-dimensional (3D) features with wavelength, intensity and time (picosecond) as the X, Y and Z-axis, res

Opportunities and challenges in energy and electron transfer of nanocluster based hybrid materials and their sensing applications.

This feature article highlights the recent advances of luminescent metal nanoclusters (MNCs) for their potential applications in healthcare and energy-related materials because of their high photosensitivity, thermal stability, low toxicity, and biocompatibility. Current studies reveal that metal cluster based hybrid systems could pave the way for energy harvesting and sensing applications. To begin with, we illustrate general synthesis methodologies for atomically precise metal nanoclusters and discuss the origin of photoluminescence properties and the electronic transitions of nanoclusters.

Disruption of Energy Transfer and Redox Status by Sulfite in Hippocampus, Striatum, and Cerebellum of Developing Rats.

Patients with sulfite oxidase (SO) deficiency present severe brain abnormalities, whose pathophysiology is not yet elucidated. We evaluated the effects of sulfite and thiosulfate, metabolites accumulated in SO deficiency, on creatine kinase (CK) activity, mitochondrial respiration and redox status in hippocampus, striatum and cerebellum of developing rats. Our in vitro results showed that sulfite and thiosulfate decreased CK activity, whereas sulfite also increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in all brain structures evaluated. Sulfite further diminished mitochondrial respiration and increased

Modulation of defect-mediated energy transfer from ZnO nanoparticles for the photocatalytic degradation of bilirubin.

In recent years, nanotechnology has gained significant interest for applications in the medical field. In this regard, a utilization of the ZnO nanoparticles for the efficient degradation of bilirubin (BR) through photocatalysis was explored. BR is a water insoluble byproduct of the heme catabolism that can cause jaundice when its excretion is impaired. The photocatalytic degradation of BR activated by ZnO nanoparticles through a non-radiative energy transfer pathway can be influenced by the surface defect-states (mainly the oxygen vacancies) of the catalyst nanoparticles. These were modulated

Coupling Luciferase Activation and Bioluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer Enables High-Contrast Red-Window Calcium Imaging.

Genetically encoded bioluminescent calcium indicators enable excitation-free imaging of Ca2+ dynamics with low background and without excitation-associated photobleaching. However, many exhibit lower dynamic ranges than their fluorescent counterparts, motivating the development of new sensor configurations, particularly for imaging in the red optical window, where tissue absorption and scattering are reduced. Here, we developed HyBRIC and HyBRIC2, two hybrid indicators that integrate Ca2+-dependent luciferase activation and bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) within a single molec

Inter-fractional Variation of Linear Energy Transfer Profiles During Carbon-ion Radiotherapy for Pancreatic Cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIM: In carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT), a low dose-averaged linear energy transfer (LETd) within the tumor has been suggested as a potential unfavorable prognostic factor for local recurrence. However, inter-fractional variations in LETd during daily CIRT sessions remain unelucidated. This study aimed to investigate inter-fractional variations in LETd profiles during CIRT for pancreatic cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer treated with CIRT were retrospectively analyzed. Treatment plans delivering 55.2 Gy (relative biological effectiv

Dynamically Reconfigurable Ir(III) Complex-Based Co-Assemblies for Sequential Energy Transfer and Programmable Luminescence.

Most artificial light-harvesting systems (ALHSs) are built from predefined donor-acceptor combinations, making their energy transfer and emission difficult to alter after assembly. Combining reversible reconfiguration with efficient sequential energy transfer remains challenging. Herein, we report reconfigurable Ir(III) complex-based co-assemblies for sequential energy transfer and programmable luminescence. In H2O/CH3CN with a 90% water content, Ir-D self-assembles into blue-phosphorescent nanorods. Co-assembly of Ir-D with erythrosine Y (A1) or Nile red (A2) enables one-step energy transfer,

Red Phosphorescence at Elevated Temperatures Enabled by Dexter Energy Transfer in Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon-Xanthone Systems.

Organic materials with red persistent phosphorescence hold immense promise for biotechnology due to their excellent tissue permeability and high signal-to-background ratios. However, inefficient spin-orbit coupling, high triplet susceptibility, and narrow energy gapspromoted nonradiative deactivations, pose a formidable obstacle to achieving efficient red phosphorescence. This study addresses these challenges by introducing xanthone (Xan)-based host-guest systems. Utilizing polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as guests, efficient red to near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescent materials with ultralong

Modular Access to sp3-Rich Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane Bioisosteres via Energy-Transfer-Mediated Carbene Insertion.

Substituted bicyclo[1.1.1]pentanes (BCPs) are increasingly recognized as valuable sp3-rich bioisosteres for ortho- or meta-disubstituted benzene rings, offering improved pharmacokinetic properties and broad utility in drug discovery. Herein, we report an energy-transfer-enabled strategy for the synthesis of 2-substituted BCPs via strain-release triplet carbene addition to bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (BCBs). This method employs readily accessible diazoacetates and a diverse set of BCBs under mild blue-light irradiation, providing direct access to 1,2,3-trisubstituted BCPs. Key advantages include the

Pressure-Driven Energy Transfer for Enhanced Red-Light Emission in Europium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Europium-based metal-organic frameworks offer a unique platform for photoluminescent materials due to the tunable ligand structures and the inherent properties of lanthanides. However, their practical applications are limited by low luminescence efficiency due to inefficient ligand-to-metal energy transfer (LMET). Herein, we introduce a pressure-induced hydrogen bond enhancement strategy to promote the LMET process, triggering the bright red light behavior in the initially weakly emitting Eu(BTC)(H2O)6 (H3BTC: benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid). As the pressure approaches 9.2 GPa, the photolumi

Observation of E-cadherin adherens junction dynamics with metal-induced energy transfer imaging and spectroscopy.

Epithelial cadherin (E-cad) mediated cell-cell junctions play a crucial role in the establishment and maintenance of tissues and organs. In this study, we employed metal-induced energy transfer imaging and spectroscopy to investigate variations in intermembrane distance during adhesion between two model membranes adorned with E-cad. By correlating the measured intermembrane distances with the distinct E-cad junction states, we probed the dynamic behavior and diversity of E-cad junctions across different binding pathways. Our observations led to the identification of a transient intermediate st

Polaronic quantum master equation theory of inelastic and coherent resonance energy transfer for soft systems.

This work extends the theory of coherent resonance energy transfer [S. Jang, J. Chem. Phys. 131, 164101 (2009)] by including quantum mechanical inelastic effects due to modulation of donor-acceptor electronic coupling. Within the approach of the second order time local quantum master equation (QME) in the polaron picture and under the assumption that the bath degrees of freedom modulating the electronic coupling are independent of other modes, a general time evolution equation for the reduced system density operator is derived. Detailed expressions for the relaxation operators and inhomogeneou

Temperature- and field-dependent energy transfer in CdSe nanocrystal aggregates studied by magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy.

The influence of temperature and applied magnetic fields on photoluminescence (PL) emission and electronic energy transfer (ET) of both isolated and aggregated CdSe nanocrystals was investigated. Following 400-nm excitation, temperature-dependent, intensity-integrated and energy-resolved PL measurements were used to quantify the emission wavelength and amplitude of isolated CdSe nanocrystals. The results indicated an approximately three-fold increase in PL intensity upon decreasing the temperature from 300 K to 6 K; this was attributed to a reduction of charge carrier access to nanocrystal sur

Real-time fluorescent resonance energy transfer analysis to monitor drug resistance in chronic myelogenous leukemia.

Despite the initial effectiveness of oncogene-directed cancer therapeutics, acquired drug resistance remains the ultimate "Achilles' heel" for long-term durable remission in cancer patients. Acquisition of drug resistance is not more evident elsewhere than in the use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors, imatinib and dasatinib, for patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia. Hence, even though imatinib initially produces remission in the chronic phase, ultimately these therapeutics fail via the emergence of drug resistance, in which chronic myelogenous leukemia could inevitably progress to a terminal

Luminescent quantum dots fluorescence resonance energy transfer-based probes for enzymatic activity and enzyme inhibitors.

The paper describes the development and characterization of analytical properties of quantum dot-based probes for enzymatic activity and for screening enzyme inhibitors. The luminescent probes are based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between luminescent quantum dots that serve as donors and rhodamine acceptors that are immobilized to the surface of the quantum dots through peptide linkers. Peptide-coated CdSe/ZnS quantum dots were prepared using a one-step ligand exchange process in which RGDC peptide molecules replace trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) molecules as the capping l

Rational design of genetically encoded fluorescence resonance energy transfer-based sensors of cellular Cdc42 signaling.

The temporal and spatial control of Rho GTPase signaling pathways is a central issue in understanding the molecular mechanisms that generate complex cellular movements. The Rho protein Cdc42 induces a significant conformational change in its downstream effector, the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP). On the basis of this conformational change, we have created a series of single-molecule sensors for both active Cdc42 and Cdc42 guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) that utilize fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between cyan and yellow fluorescent proteins. In vitro, the Cd

alpha4beta3delta GABA(A) receptors characterized by fluorescence resonance energy transfer-derived measurements of membrane potential.

Selective modulators of gamma-aminobutyric acid, type A (GABA(A)) receptors containing alpha(4) subunits may provide new treatments for epilepsy and premenstrual syndrome. Using mouse L(-tk) cells, we stably expressed the native GABA(A) receptor subunit combinations alpha(3)beta(3)gamma(2,) alpha(4)beta(3)gamma(2), and, for the first time, alpha(4)beta(3)delta and characterized their properties using a novel fluorescence resonance energy transfer assay of GABA-evoked depolarizations. Enhanced Energy Transfer from a Metal-Organic Framework to a Highly Confined Organic Phosphorescent Dye.

Three-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline, porous hybrid materials with well-defined pore structures, offering isotropic adsorption of molecules in their pore system. We designed and synthesized an organic, phosphorescent di-tert-butyl-carbazole dibenzophenazine chromophore, 11-DTCz-BP, with an appropriate size for a tight hand-to-glove fit into the 1D pore channels of MIL-68(In). MOF particles are synthesized, and homogeneous films are prepared on Au-substrates through electrochemical deposition. The steric demand of 11-DTz-BP yields a crystallographic ordered confinem

Uranyl-ion Directed Hydrogelation of Cholate for Enhanced Emission Resolution and Energy Transfer-driven Sensing.

In this work, we report the first example of an actinide (UO2 2+) induced hydrogel formation. We discovered that the gel phase led to a remarkable improvement in the resolution of the emission from the uranyl cation. This phenomenon was previously seen only in sophisticated uranyl complexes in organic solvents or in the solid-state. The organized and confined gel microenvironment facilitated efficient energy transfer from UO2 2+→ Eu3+ in the hydrogel matrix. Additionally, this "turn-on" energy transfer strategy provided a simple method for uranyl sensing using commercially available ingredient

Robust Optimization for Spot-Scanning Proton Therapy based on Dose-Linear-Energy-Transfer Volume Constraints.

PURPOSE: Historically, spot-scanning proton therapy (SSPT) treatment planning uses dose-volume constraints and linear-energy-transfer (LET) volume constraints separately to balance tumor control and organs-at-risk (OARs) protection. We propose a novel dose-LET-volume constraint (DLVC)-based robust optimization (DLVCRO) method for SSPT in treating prostate cancer to obtain a desirable joint dose and LET distribution to minimize adverse events. METHODS AND MATERIALS: DLVCRO treats DLVC as soft constraints that control the shapes of the dose-LET volume histogram (DLVH) curves. It minimizes the o
