Interpretable machine learning for gallstone risk prediction: an ensemble stacking approach with SHAP analysis.

Gallstone disease is a gastrointestinal condition requiring accessible, low-cost screening tools. We developed an interpretable ensemble stacking model for noninvasive gallstone prediction using bioimpedance/laboratory data from 319 individuals (157 patients, 162 controls) with 38 features. Bayesian-optimized SVM, logistic regression, and decision tree models were combined with a deep neural network meta-learner. Ten repeated nested cross-validation yielded 82.3% accuracy and 85.7% AUC, outperforming classical stacking and eight algorithms. SHAP identified CRP, liver enzymes, and HDL cholester

Integrative ensemble learning framework for forecasting controlled drug release based on Raman spectral signatures.

Modeling drug-release kinetics from polysaccharide-coated oral controlled-release formulations remains challenging due to nonlinear diffusion–dissolution behavior, complex polymer–drug interactions, and the limited interpretability of conventional machine-learning approaches. In this study, we develop and validate a predictive framework for targeted colonic delivery of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) from polysaccharide-coated solid oral dosage forms using Raman spectroscopy–derived molecular fingerprints and time-resolved dissolution data. The dataset comprises 155 formulation samples, each cha

Dynamic Ensemble Transfer Learning with Multi-view Ultrasonography for Improving Thyroid Cancer Diagnostic Reliability.

Diagnostic decision-making requires the integration of relevant facts and clinician experience. Incorporating the clinical experience from diverse backgrounds is beneficial in a multi-disciplinary model to mitigate uncertainties aroused by incomplete mastery of knowledge. However, current computer-aided diagnostic systems are generally designed using unitary datasets and are challenging to adapt to diverse institutions, leading to the limited reliability of the generated decisions. Accordingly, this study proposes a dynamic ensemble transfer learning-based system that simulates such diversity

MFE-ACVP: anti-coronavirus peptide prediction based on multimodal feature extraction and ensemble learning.

The COVID-19 pandemic poses a serious threat to global public health. Anti-coronavirus peptides (ACVPs) exhibit high targeting, low toxicity, and excellent modifiability, making them promising candidates for antiviral drug discovery. These properties offer advantages over traditional small-molecule drugs. To reduce the time and cost spent on large-scale peptide screening and activity validation, there is an urgent need to construct efficient artificial intelligence models that assist in the identification of ACVPs. However, the limited number of experimentally validated ACVPs severely constrai

Identification of colorectal malignancies enabled by phasor-based autofluorescence lifetime macroimaging and ensemble learning.

SIGNIFICANCE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the most frequent cancers and a leading contributor to cancer-associated mortality globally. CRCs are often diagnosed at an advanced stage, which leads to high mortality and morbidity. This outcome is exacerbated by high rates of recurrence and postoperative complications that contribute substantially to poor prognosis. Advancements in endoscopic assessment have improved CRC prevention, early detection, and surveillance over the years. Yet, CRC remains one of the most significant health challenges of the 21st century. Label-free optical spec

SR-TWAS: Leveraging Multiple Reference Panels to Improve TWAS Power by Ensemble Machine Learning.

Multiple reference panels of a given tissue or multiple tissues often exist, and multiple regression methods could be used for training gene expression imputation models for TWAS. To leverage expression imputation models (i.e., base models) trained with multiple reference panels, regression methods, and tissues, we develop a Stacked Regression based TWAS (SR-TWAS) tool which can obtain optimal linear combinations of base models for a given validation transcriptomic dataset. Both simulation and real studies showed that SR-TWAS improved power, due to increased effective training sample sizes and

Cough2COVID-19 detection using an enhanced multi layer ensemble deep learning framework and CoughFeatureRanker.

In response to the pressing requirement for precise and easily accessible COVID-19 detection methods, we present the Cough2COVID-19 framework, which is cost-effective, non-intrusive, and widely accessible. The conventional diagnostic methods, notably the PCR test, are encumbered by limitations such as cost and invasiveness. Consequently, the exploration of alternative solutions has gained momentum. Our innovative approach employs a multi-layer ensemble deep learning (MLEDL) framework that capitalizes on cough audio signals to achieve heightened efficiency in COVID-19 detection. This study intr

Identifying trigger cues for hospital blood transfusions based on ensemble of machine learning methods.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic shock is the leading cause of preventable death with most patients dying within the first six hours from arriving to the hospital. This underscores the importance of prehospital interventions, and growing evidence suggests prehospital transfusion improves survival. Optimizing transfusion triggers in the prehospital setting is key to improving outcomes for patients in hemorrhagic shock. Our objective was to identify factors associated with early in-hospital transfusion requirements available to prehospital clinicians in the field to develop a simple algorithm for prehospit

Selective ensemble methods for deep learning segmentation of major vessels in invasive coronary angiography.

BACKGROUND: Invasive coronary angiography (ICA) is a primary imaging modality that visualizes the lumen area of coronary arteries for diagnosis and interventional guidance. In the current practice of quantitative coronary analysis (QCA), semi-automatic segmentation tools require labor-intensive and time-consuming manual correction, limiting their application in the catheterization room. PURPOSE: This study aims to propose rank-based selective ensemble methods that improve the segmentation performance and reduce morphological errors that limit fully automated quantification of coronary artery

Automatic classification of distal radius fracture using a two-stage ensemble deep learning framework.

Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are one of the most common types of wrist fracture and can be subdivided into intra- and extra-articular fractures. Compared with extra-articular DRFs which spare the joint surface, intra-articular DRFs extend to the articular surface and can be more difficult to treat. Identification of articular involvement can provide valuable information about the characteristics of fracture patterns. In this study, a two-stage ensemble deep learning framework was proposed to differentiate intra- and extra-articular DRFs automatically on posteroanterior (PA) view wrist X-rays

Classification of Alzheimer's Disease Using Ensemble of Deep Neural Networks Trained Through Transfer Learning.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the deadliest neurodegenerative diseases ailing the elderly population all over the world. An ensemble of Deep learning (DL) models can learn highly complicated patterns from MRI scans for the detection of AD by utilizing diverse solutions. In this work, we propose a computationally efficient, DL-architecture agnostic, ensemble of deep neural networks, named 'Deep Transfer Ensemble (DTE)' trained using transfer learning for the classification of AD. DTE leverages the complementary feature views and diversity introduced by many different locally optimum soluti

Sevoflurane-induced amnesia is associated with inhibition of hippocampal cell ensemble activity after learning.

General anesthesia could induce amnesia, however the mechanism remains unclear. We hypothesized that suppression of neuronal ensemble activity in the hippocampus by anesthesia during the post-learning period causes retrograde amnesia. To test this hypothesis, two experiments were conducted with sevoflurane anesthesia (2.5%, 30 min): a hippocampus-dependent memory task, the context pre-exposure facilitation effect (CPFE) procedure to measure memory function and in vivo calcium imaging to observe neural activity in hippocampal CA1 during context exploration and sevoflurane/home cage session.
