[Enterobacter cloacae--antimicrobial susceptibility of strains isolated from hospitalized patients in 2004-2005].

The profiles of resistance of ESBL(-) and ESBL(+) strains of Enterobacter cloacae were analysed and compared. 466 Enterobacter cloacae strains isolated from different specimens obtained from patients of big Warsaw hospital in 2004-2005 were investigated. By using the several phenotypic methods 33.5% of strains was identified as ESBL(+). ESBL(+) strains were significantly less susceptible then ESBL(-). These two groups differed mostly in susceptibility to aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones, e.g. 65.5% of ESBL(-) strains were susceptible to gentamicin, compared to only 25.0% ESBL(+), in case o

Cloning and sequencing of Enterobacter aerogenes OmpC-type osmoporin linked to carbapenem resistance.

Using outbreak-related strains of Enterobacter aerogenes, we cloned and sequenced ompK39, the structural gene coding for outer membrane protein OmpK39. Its lack of expression was closely associated with a phenotype exhibiting low-level carbapenem resistance. Detailed alignment of the predicted amino acid sequence revealed that OmpK39 is a member of the OmpC subclass of enterobacterial porins, with the highest degree of homology to Klebsiella pneumoniae OmpK36. Based on a computerized alignment including Escherichia coli PhoE and OmpF, the 3D structures of which are known from X-ray studies, Om

Genome-Guided Discovery of Enterobacter Multicopper Oxidases Enabling Enzymatic Detoxification of Aflatoxin B1.

Aflatoxin B1 is a potent Group I carcinogen that contaminates food and feed, necessitating efficient detoxification strategies. This study isolated a novel bacterial strain, Enterobacter sp. HNGD-822 from soil, which efficiently degrades AFB1. Genome analysis identified two novel multicopper oxidase (laccase) genes, EbMCO1 and EbMCO2. The recombinant enzymes were heterologously expressed, exhibiting optimal activity at 50 °C and pH 7.0, with strict Cu2+ dependence. Within 12 h, EbMCO1 degraded over 99% of AFB1, while EbMCO2 also showed high activity under the same conditions. Both enzymes prim

Molecular dynamic simulations to assess the structural variability of ClpV from Enterobacter cloacae.

The Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) consists of six Enterobacter species (E. cloacae, hormaechei, kobei, ludwigii, nimipressuralis and asburiae) that have emerged as nosocomial pathogens of interest, with E. cloacae and Enterobacter hormachei being the most frequently isolated ECC species in human clinical specimens and intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Many nosocomial outbreaks of E. cloacae have been related to transmission through contaminated surgical equipment and operative cleaning solutions. As this pathogen evades the action of antibiotics, it is important to find alternative targ

Characterization of lytic bacteriophage vB_EhoP_ZX13 and its therapeutic potential against Enterobacter hormaechei infection.

Enterobacter hormaechei (E. hormaechei) is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause various animal diseases under certain conditions, including pneumonia, peritonitis, and pyogenic endometritis. The emergence of multidrug-resistant E. hormaechei has severely limited treatment options, highlighting the urgent need for alternative therapeutic strategies such as bacteriophage therapy. In this study, we isolated and characterized a lytic bacteriophage, vB_EhoP_ZX13, from aquaculture samples using E. hormaechei-Eho13 as the host. Morphological analysis revealed that vB_EhoP_ZX13 exhibited typical l

Priming effect with photoinactivation against extensively drug-resistant Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

In this study, we present antimicrobial blue light (aBL) and antimicrobial photoinactivation with green light in the presence of Rose Bengal (aPDI) to modulate the susceptibility of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates to antimicrobials. This process can be considered a photodynamic priming tool that influences other therapeutic options, such as antibiotics. The current study evaluated the different environments to estimate the most effective priming conditions by testing a broad spectrum of antimicrobials (including antimicrobials w

High mortality rate associated with KPC-producing Enterobacter cloacae in a Brazilian hospital.

We describe a clonal dissemination of KPC-producing Enterobacter cloacae in a Brazilian hospital. Patients diagnosed with theses isolates showed high mortality rate (41.8%) and were associated with previous use of antibiotics and urinary catheterization. Therefore, infection control measures and use of stricter antibiotic policies are required to control the spread of these organisms.

A multiple antibiotic-resistant enterobacter cloacae strain isolated from a bioethanol fermentation facility.

An Enterobacter cloacae strain (E. cloacae F3S3) that was collected as part of a project to assess antibiotic resistance among bacteria isolated from bioethanol fermentation facilities demonstrated high levels of resistance to antibiotics added prophylactically to bioethanol fermentors. PCR assays revealed the presence of canonical genes encoding resistance to penicillin (ampC) and erythromycin (ermG). Assays measuring biofilm formation under antibiotic stress indicated that erythromycin induced biofilm formation in E. cloacae F3S3. Planktonic growth and biofilm formation were observed at a hi

Infective endocarditis due to Enterobacter cloacae resistant to third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins.

We report the case of using a long-term combination of meropenem and amikacin to treat infective endocarditis caused by Enterobacter cloacae resistant to third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins. Multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacilli, such as the E. cloacae in our study, may become possible pathogens of infective endocarditis. Our experience with this case indicates that long-term use of a combination of β-lactam and aminoglycosides might represent a suitable management option for future infective endocarditis cases due to non-Haemophilus, Actinobacillus, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella, Ki

Phenotypic and genetic analysis of Enterobacter spp. from a Brazilian oligotrophic freshwater lake.

We characterized a population of Enterobacter spp. of the Enterobacter cloacae complex isolated from an oligotrophic lake; most isolates were identified as E. cloacae. Fingerprinting polymerase chain reaction (PCR), along with morphological, biochemical, physiological, and plasmid profiles analyses, including antimicrobial susceptibility testing, were performed on 22 environmental isolates. Misidentification occurred when using the API 20E identification system. Analysis of 16S rDNA sequences confirmed the close relatedness between species of the E. cloacae complex. The tDNA PCR allowed the di

Pan-genome insights into type VI secretion systems and their functional repertoires in Enterobacter.

The Enterobacter genus contains 23 species that include common nosocomial pathogens capable of causing a wide variety of infections. We obtained all available Enterobacter genomes and retained 4,805 high-quality genomes after quality control. Genome sequencing analysis of Enterobacter species revealed the presence of type VI secretion systems (T6SS) in these bacteria, but systematic analysis and comparison of these systems among different species are limited. We found that these bacteria code for three distinct types of T6SS, each with a unique set of diverse predicted effectors. Whereas at le

Underestimation about the Contribution of Nitrate Reducers to Iron Cycling Indicated by Enterobacter Strain.

Nitrate-reducing iron(II) oxidation (NRFO) has been intensively reported in various bacteria. Iron(II) oxidation is found to be involved in both enzymatic and chemical reactions in nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing microorganisms (NRFOMs). However, little is known about the relative contribution of biotic and abiotic reactions to iron(II) oxidation for the common nitrate reducers during the NRFO process. In this study, the typical nitrate reducers, four Enterobacter strains E. hormaechei, E. tabaci, E. mori and E. asburiae, were utilized as the model microorganisms. The comparison of the kinet
