Subinhibitory Antibiotic Concentrations Enhance Biofilm Formation of Clinical Enterococcus faecalis Isolates.

Enterococcus faecalis is a microorganism that can be found in the oral cavity, especially in secondary endodontic infections, with a prevalence ranging from 24-70%. The increase in the ability to form biofilms in the presence of subinhibitory antibiotic concentrations is a phenomenon that is observed for a wide variety of bacterial pathogens and is associated with increased resistance. In this study, therefore, six E. faecalis isolates from an endodontic environment and two control strains were exposed to subinhibitory concentrations of Penicillin G, Amoxicillin, Doxycycline, Fosfomycin, Tetra

Ampicillin Plus Ceftriaxone Regimen against Enterococcus faecalis Endocarditis: A Literature Review.

Enterococcus faecalis infective endocarditis (EFIE) continues to represent a potentially fatal infectious disease characterized by elevated morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in antimicrobial therapy, changing demographics and the reduced availability of useful antibiotics combined with the dissemination of multi-drug resistant strains, the mortality rate remained unchanged in the last decades. Nowadays, optimizing the antibiotic regimen is still of paramount importance. Historically, aminoglycosides were considered as a cornerstone for treatment even though their use is associated with

Characterization and genome analysis of novel phage vB_EfaP_IME195 infecting Enterococcus faecalis.

Enterococcus faecalis is one of the main bacteria in the human and animal intestine but is also classed as an opportunistic pathogen. During normal growth, E. faecalis produces natural antibiotics and is conducive to human health. As ectopic parasites, E. faecalis is capable of causing infective endocarditis, neonatal sepsis, bloodstream infections, bacteremia, and intraabdominal infections. With the incidence of antibiotic resistance reaching crisis point, it is imperative to find alternative treatments for multidrug-resistant infections. Using phage for pathogen control is a promising treatm

Epidemiology of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis: a case-case-control study.

Although much is known about vancomycin-resistant (VR) Enterococcus faecium, little is known about the epidemiology of VR Enterococcus faecalis. The predilection of VR E. faecalis to transfer the vancomycin resistance determinant to Staphylococcus aureus is much greater than that of VR E. faecium. The epidemiology of VR E. faecalis has important implications regarding the emergence of vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA); 8 of 13 reported VRSA cases have been from Michigan. A retrospective case-case-control study was conducted at the Detroit Medical Center, located in southeastern Michigan. U

Antimicrobial Resistance and Species Dynamics of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium in Breeding Hens: Phenotypic and Genotypic Characterization.

Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium are commensal bacteria of poultry but also important opportunistic pathogens and key indicators for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance within a One Health framework. However, data on the occurrence and antimicrobial resistance of enterococci in breeding hens remain limited despite their critical role in the poultry production pyramid. This study evaluated the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and resistance genes of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium isolated from two commercial breeding hen farms in eastern Spain

Development and application of a rapid dual RPA-LFS assay for simultaneous detection of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium.

Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis, ranked among the top three global nosocomial pathogens (WHO data), pose escalating threats due to multidrug resistance (particularly vancomycin-resistant strains, VRE) and foodborne transmission. Conventional detection relies on time-consuming culture-based typing (ISO 7899-2; 48-72 h) with > 12% false-negative rates, while molecular methods like qPCR require sophisticated instrumentation, limiting field deployment. This study developed a rapid dual recombinase polymerase amplification-lateral flow strip (RPA-LFS) assay for simultaneous detection

The Enterococcus secretome inhibits the growth of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis V853 with their antiproliferative properties and nanoencapsulation effects.

In our study, the secretome of the clinical isolate Enterococcus faecalis HY7 displayed antibacterial activity against the vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis V853. These bacteriocin-like substances showed thermal stability at a wide range of temperatures up to 121 °C, while proteinase K treatment resulted in a total loss of their activity. PCR-based screening for bacteriocin biosynthetic genes revealed that Enterococcus faecalis HY7 harbored multiple enterocin-producing genes, including ent A, avc A, and as-48. The production kinetics demonstrated the highest levels of bacteriocins pro

The ongoing challenge of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis in Europe: an epidemiological analysis of bloodstream infections.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci infections are of great public health significance due to limited therapeutic options. We investigated epidemiological trends and risk factors of vancomycin resistance in enterococci isolates from patients with bloodstream infections in the EU/EEA from 2012 to 2018. Routine vancomycin susceptibility data of clinical E. faecium (n = 67,022) and E. faecalis (n = 103,112) blood isolates from the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network were analysed using descriptive statistics and multivariable regression analyses. In Europe, proportions of vancomyc

Resistance to Human-Reserved Antimicrobials in Clinical and Commensal Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium from Dogs and Cats.

Background/Objectives: Although companion animals are recognized as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistant enterococci, it remains unclear whether antimicrobial resistance differs between clinical and commensal isolates, particularly for antimicrobials reserved for human medicine. This study compared antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of clinical and commensal E. faecalis and E. faecium isolates from dogs and cats, focusing on antimicrobials reserved for human medicine under European regulation and EMA/AMEG classification. Methods: A total of 99 isolates (49 E. faecalis and 50 E. faecium) co

Comparative genomic characterization and antimicrobial resistance of bacteremia-causing Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis in a Chinese hospital.

Enterococci are common commensals of the human gut and important opportunistic pathogens, with Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis being the most clinically prevalent species. A significant epidemiological shift has emerged with an increasing clinical burden of E. faecium. To compare genomic evolution of E. faecium and E. faecalis, we performed whole-genome sequencing on 93 E. faecium and 32 E. faecalis isolates causing bloodstream infections at a single hospital (2022-2024). Analysis of patient demographics revealed that E. faecium infections originated from fewer sources than E. f

Drug Repurposing: In vitro and in vivo Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Effects of Bithionol Against Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium.

Widespread antibiotic resistance has been reported in enterococcal pathogens that cause life-threatening infections. Enterococci species rapidly acquire resistance and the pace of new antibiotic development is slow. Drug repurposing is a promising approach in solving this problem. Bithionol (BT) is a clinically approved anthelminthic drug. In this study, we found that BT showed significant antimicrobial and antibiofilm effects against Enterococcus faecalis and vancomycin-resistant Entercococcus faecium in vitro, in a dose-dependent manner, by disrupting the integrity of the bacterial cell memb

Status of high level aminoglycoside resistant Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis in a rural hospital of central India.

Considering the emergence of high level aminoglycoside resistance (HLAR) in enterococci this study was undertaken to determine their status in a rural setting. HLAR by disc diffusion and agar dilution, beta lactamase by nitrocefin disc and vancomycin resistance by agar dilution was determined in 150 enterococcal isolates, as per NCCLS guidelines. Only two species, Enterococcus faecalis (85.5%) and Enterococcus faecium (14.7%) were recovered, mostly from blood. Forty six percent showed HLAR. Multi drug resistance and concomitant resistance of HLAR strains to beta lactams were quite high. None s
