Examination of forensic entomology evidence using computed tomography scanning: case studies and refinement of techniques for estimating maggot mass volumes in bodies.

A new technique has recently been developed for estimating the volume of maggot masses on deceased persons using post-mortem CT scans. This allows volume to be measured non-invasively and factored into maggot mass temperature calculations for both casework and research. Examination of admission scans also allows exploration of entomological evidence in anatomical areas not usually exposed by autopsy (e.g. nasal cavities and facial sinuses), and before autopsy disrupts the maggot distribution on a body. This paper expands on work already completed by providing the x-ray attenuation coefficient

First report of human myiasis caused by Chrysomya megacephala and Chrysomya rufifacies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in Thailand, and its implication in forensic entomology.

We report a forensic entomology case associated with human myiasis in Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand. The remains of a 53-yr-old-male were concurrently infested with third instars of the two blow fly species, Chrysomya megacephala (F.) and Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart), near a severe tumor lesion presented on the lower right leg. The presence of third instars, approximately 5 d old, on the day following postmortem indicated that myiasis occurred before death. This is the first report of both fly species acting as a myiasis-producing agent in Thailand. Unsynchronized data between the

It is all about the insects: a retrospective on 20 years of forensic entomology highlights the importance of insects in legal investigations.

This study highlights the importance of insect evidence by evaluating 949 insect-associated cases, including 139 entomological reports, from 2001 to 2019 at the Institute of Legal Medicine Frankfurt/Germany. With a high number of cases in the summer months and a low number in the colder season, 78.5% of the bodies were found indoors, regardless of year or month. In more than 80% of the cases, where PMI information was available (n = 704), the presumed PMI ranged from 1 to 21 days, a period during which entomological evidence can provide a day-specific estimate of PMImin. In cases where insects

Characterization of entomological drivers of malaria transmission in five villages, Keerom Regency, Papua, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Keerom Regency remains one of the high-malaria-endemic regencies in Indonesia. Despite the accelerated malaria elimination strategy underway in Papua, malaria transmission in this regency has not declined. To characterize the entomological and human behavioral factors sustaining and driving malaria transmission, a rapid entomological assessment paired with human behavior observations (HBOs) and household surveys was conducted in five villages of Keerom Regency. METHODS: Entomological surveys were conducted on three occasions in 2022 and 2023. Human landing catches (HLC), night ind

Entomological surveillance of malaria vector: species, behaviors, and insecticide resistance in southern and central Benin.

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission in Benin is shaped by ecological heterogeneity, vector biting behavior, and increasing insecticide resistance. However, integrated multi-season data combining vector behavior, infection, and resistance remain limited in southern and central Benin. METHODS: From December 2023 to October 2024, an entomological and molecular survey was conducted in six districts across southern and central Benin over dry and rainy season collection rounds. Adult mosquitoes were collected using human landing catches (HLC) and pyrethrum spray catches (PSC), identified morphological

Entomological, parasitological and molecular investigations in a new focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Youssoufia region, Morocco.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical infection caused by Leishmania parasite that affect human and animal. In Morocco, the cutaneous leishmaniasis has spread substantially to the new areas. The surveillance limited to active foci may underestimate the occurrence of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). This study aims to investigate the local transmission of CL in rural districts of Youssoufia province, central Morocco, as a potential focus of CL. METHODS: For this purpose, parasitological, molecular and entomological investigations were carried out in this area. Data collection

Review of West Nile virus circulation and outbreak risk in Madagascar: Entomological and ornithological perspectives.

West Nile fever (WNF) is a zoonotic disease, occurring nearly globally. In Madagascar, West Nile virus (WNV) was first detected in 1978 from wild birds and the virus is currently distributed across the island, but no epidemic or epizootic period has been recorded. One fatal human case of WNV infection was reported in 2011, suggesting a "tip of the iceberg" phenomenon of a possible WNF epidemic/epizootic on the island. The main objective of this literature-based survey is to review patterns of WNV circulation in Madagascar from the entomological and ornithological points of view. Among the 235

Human and entomological surveillance of Toscana virus in the Emilia-Romagna region, Italy, 2010 to 2012.

Toscana virus (TOSV), transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies, is recognised as one of the most important causes of viral meningitis in summer in Mediterranean countries. A surveillance plan based on both human and entomological surveys was started in 2010 in the Emilia-Romagna region, Italy. Clinical samples from patients with neurological manifestations were collected during 2010 to 2012. The surveillance protocol was improved during these years, allowing the detection of 65 human infections. Most of these infections were recorded in hilly areas, where sandflies reach the highest density. Ento

Sampling techniques for adult Afrotropical malaria vectors and their reliability in the estimation of entomological inoculation rate.

Various entomological indicators and sampling techniques are used to monitor and evaluate the impact of many vector control interventions. A number of methods have been used in sampling mosquitoes for the purpose of estimating the entomological inoculation rate (EIR) and each is subject to some bias or shortcomings. It was the aim of this paper to critically evaluate the most common mosquito sampling techniques in relation to their reliability in the estimation of EIR. The techniques include man-landing, light trap, light trap/bednet combination and odour-baited traps. Although man-landing tec

Tsetse movement in wind fields: possible epidemiological and entomological implications for trypanosomiasis and its control.

This paper presents evidence that tsetse flies (Glossina) can be dispersed by wind. This dispersal in West Africa is suggested to be along a south-west north-east axis. The implications of wind dispersal of Glossina for chemical and genetic control operations is discussed. Field experiments necessary to test this hypothesis are recommended. A study of human trypanosomiasis foci in West Africa has revealed that foci are orientated in roughly parallel lines in a south-west north-east direction. This directionally was significant when compared with 7 other compass points. It is proposed that foci

The Rift Valley fever epizootic in Egypt 1977-78. 2. Ecological and entomological studies.

Epidemiological factors related to the introduction, spread and maintenance of Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus were studied during the 1977-78 epizootic in Egypt, Culex pipiens is the most ubiquitous and prevalent mosquito species in the Nile Valley and Delta. Isolation of RVF virus from unengorged C. pipiens, and demonstration of laboratory transmission of the virus by this species, strongly implicate it as the chief vector in Egypt. Virus transmission to man also occurs by contamination when handling infected meat and by inhaling natural virus aerosols. Wild rodents apparently do not serve as
