OBJECTIVES: To investigate afferent pathway dysfunction in children with primary nocturnal enuresis by measuring pudendal somatosensory evoked potential and tibial somatosensory evoked potential.
METHODS: Subjects with primary nocturnal enuresis, 36 boys and 18 girls, aged from 5 to 16 years, were enrolled in this study: 24 subjects had complicated primary enuresis (CPE) and 30 subjects had monosymptomatic primary enuresis (MPE). There were no differences in bodyweight or gender between the MPE and CPE groups (P > 0.05). All of the children underwent physical examination, urine analysis, urin

PURPOSE: Although the relationship between enuresis and psychopathology has been studied intensively, little is known about the prevalence of specific psychiatric disorders. We investigate the prevalence of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children with nocturnal enuresis and correlate these data with clinical subtypes of enuresis/incontinence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 120 children with nocturnal enuresis 6 to 12 years old participated in a prevalence study. A diagnostic interview was conducted with parents, questionnaires were completed by parents and teachers, and

The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence and associated factors of enuresis nocturna and to better understand nocturnal bladder control in Turkish children. A randomized epidemiological study was performed among primary school children, aged four to 12 years, living in Aydin, Turkey. After data collection via a self-administered questionnaire completed by the parents, data of 2,300 children were accepted for the analysis. The overall prevalence of reported marked nocturnal enuresis (at least weekly) was 11.6 percent and of day wetting 0.8 percent. Enuresis was more frequent in boy

BACKGROUND: Nocturnal enuresis is generally considered a children's condition, yet it may persist 1%-2% in adolescence and early adulthood. Refractory patients often demand follow-up by multidisciplinary teams, which is only restricted to some of the expert tertiary centers. However, there are no standardized transition programs/guidelines when follow-up must be passed from pediatric to adult healthcare providers.
AIM, MATERIALS & METHODS: To investigate this issue, we conducted a literature search on enuresis transition, which resulted in no articles. We, therefore, proceeded in a rescue sea

BACKGROUND: Nocturnal polyuria (NP) due to a suppressed vasopressin circadian rhythm is a well-documented pathogenetic mechanism in enuresis, mainly studied in monosymptomatic enuresis. A substantial percentage of patients do not respond to desmopressin. This suggests that NP may not only be related to vasopressin, but that other kidney components play a role. Solute handling and osmotic excretion have been investigated in the past, especially in refractory patients. Nevertheless, data in treatment-naïve populations with information on timing overnight are sparse. This study aims to investigat

OBJECTIVE: Enuresis is a major problem affecting both the child and his family. This study aimed to investigate the effect of enuresis on mother acceptance-rejection perceived by children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourty-six children and their mothers with the diagnosis of primary enuresis were included in the study. Parental Acceptance-Rejection Scale which consisted of 60 questions and consisted of four subscales: affection, hostility, neglect, and undifferentiated rejection was applied to both mothers and children. A dependent Sample t-test was used to compare the scale results of mothers and

BACKGROUND: Ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is a neurodegenerative cerebellar disorder, caused by mutations in the ATM gene, involved in DNA repair. Radiosensitivity, progressive ataxia, immune deficiency and malignancies, are well known symptoms, but urological manifestations are scarcely described.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize urologic manifestations in a large cohort of AT patients.
METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional chart study comprising 52 AT patients followed at a National AT Center.
RESULTS: 25% of the cohort (13 patients/8 males) had urologic symptoms, which presented at 11 ± 4.3 year

Nocturnal enuresis is a common problem affecting school-aged children worldwide. Although it has significant impact on child's psychology, it is always under-recognized in India and considered as a condition which will outgrow with advancing age. Nocturnal enuresis classified as primary or secondary and monosymptomatic or nonmonosymptomatic. Factors that cause enuresis include genetic factors, bladder dysfunction, psychological factors, and inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion, leading to nocturnal polyuria. Diagnosis consists of detailed medical history, clinical examination, frequenc

Most patients with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis can be effectively treated with an enuresis alarm or antidiuretic therapy (desmopressin), depending on the pathophysiology of the condition in the individual patient. Desmopressin is first-line therapy for enuresis caused by nocturnal polyuria, an excessive urine output during the night. However, in a recent study, around one-third of patients thought to be resistant to desmopressin were subsequently treated effectively with desmopressin monotherapy in a specialist centre. The aim of this article is to review best practice in selecting pati

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Many recent treatment guidelines have advocated the importance of a full noninvasive medical evaluation. To individualize treatment, special emphasis must be put on recording of the maximum voided volume (MVV) and nocturnal diuresis in a diary or frequency/volume chart.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify any possible predictive factors to desmopressin response.
STUDY DESIGN: This study is a re-analysis of a prospective, open-label, multinational, phase-IV study evaluating ≤6 months of treatment with desmopressin tablets for children with primary nocturn

Frequency of comorbid disorders and neuropsychological state, executive functions (EF), were studied in two groups of patients aged from 5 to 14 years: 53 patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the association with enuresis and 71 patients with ADHD without enuresis. The most cases of enuresis (50 out of 53 patients) were represented by primary nocturnal enuresis. The significant increase of total number of ADHD cases with comorbidity for oppositional-defiant disorder, anxiety disorder, tics or encopresis (77.7%) was found in the first group compared to the second one

PURPOSE: We evaluated the incidence of hypercalciuria, defined as urinary calcium-to-creatinine ratio greater than 0.21 mg/mg, in children with nocturnal enuresis, and the association with concurrent values of diuresis and osmolar excretion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 550 children admitted to a tertiary university center were included in the study. A 24-hour urine collection was performed in 8 sampling periods for measurement of calcium excretion, osmolality and diuresis.
RESULTS: Of the children with nocturnal enuresis 12% had 24-hour hypercalciuria. Up to 29% of the timed urine samp

In a 7-year prospective follow-up of 104 children with enuresis in 32 cases (19 boys and 13 girls) coexistence of common migraine was found. Twenty-two children had various other seizure-like disorders, particularly tics, febrile convulsions, pavor nocturnus and fainting, and three had absence attacks. In 20 cases vasomotor disturbances and in 17 abnormal Schellong's test were found. The IQ was normal or high in all cases. Emotional disorders were observed in nearly half the cases. The water-salt test of Decourt was done in 9 cases and it was abnormal in 8 cases. At least two abnormal EEG reco

OBJECTIVE: According to international guidelines, children with enuresis are recommended urotherapy, or basic bladder advice, before treatment with evidence-based alternatives such as the enuresis alarm is given. The efficacy of this strategy has, however, not been supported by controlled studies. We wanted to test if basic bladder advice is useful in enuresis.
DESIGN: Randomised, controlled trial.
SETTING: Paediatric outpatient ward, regional hospital.
PATIENTS: Treatment-naïve enuretic children aged ≥6 years, with no daytime incontinence.
INTERVENTIONS: Three groups, each during 8 weeks:

BACKGROUND: Monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna patients are shown to have disrupted blood-pressure regulation accompanying polyuria. In our study, we aimed to research the desmopressin response of enuresis patients with blood-pressure regulation problems.
METHODS: The study included 175 patients, aged from 6-15 years, with a diagnosis of monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna. Before treatment, 24 h ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring (ABPM) was used to identify 52 non-dipper patients and 73 patients with normal results. The responses to desmopressin treatment and clinical and demographic characte
