Remediation of Bacillus anthracis contamination in the U.S. Department of Justice mail facility.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) mail facility in Landover, Maryland, was contaminated with Bacillus anthracis spores as a result of the 2001 anthrax bioterrorism attacks through the U.S. postal system. Surface environmental sampling within the facility indicated that the contamination was due to receipt of mail that had come in contact with Bacillus anthracis spores from the source letters at the Brentwood postal facility in Washington, DC. The DOJ adopted a two-pronged approach for remediating the facility, using aqueous chlorine dioxide to decontaminate hard, nonporous surfaces and para

PM2.5 anomaly detection for exceptional event demonstrations: A Texas case study.

The shifting frontiers of air pollution emission sources contribute to stagnation or reversal of air quality gains across the United States (US). The frequency and possible duration of Exceptional Events - driven primarily by wildfires and dust storms - have significantly increased in the US over the past decade. Combined with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) final rule strengthening primary annual National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for PM2.5 by 25%, communities will need to reevaluate domestic and international sources of PM2.5.This study applies the Isolation Forest m

The tragedy of Tauccamarca: a human rights perspective on the pesticide poisoning deaths of 4 children in the Peruvian Andes.

The pesticide poisoning deaths of 24 children in an isolated Peruvian village make a compelling case that corporate accountability for pesticide poisonings in the developing south should be examined from a human rights perspective. Highly toxic pesticides cannot be used safely under prevailing socioeconomic conditions. The industry asserts that the deaths of these children were accidental, blaming misuse. Tragedies such as these poisonings are not accidents, but foreseeable, and therefore preventable. Sales of highly toxic pesticides that cause repeated and predictable poisonings violate the f

Advances and future needs for modelling sustainable and just food systems transformations.

Food systems underpin human health, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability; yet, they remain major contributors to climate change, biodiversity loss, and inequity. Building on the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission on healthy, sustainable, and just food systems, a special collection of papers in The Lancet Planetary Health highlights emerging frontiers for research and modelling. Across models, dietary change remains the most effective lever for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and land-use pressure from food production, although affordability and nutritional adequacy challenges persist, parti

Editorial: Combatting the Intergenerational Trauma of Structural Racism Through Practice, Policy, and Research.

Several recent studies have investigated the mental health consequences of structural racism. Structural racism has been defined as "macro-level societal conditions that limit opportunities, resources, and well-being of less privileged groups on the basis of race/ethnicity and/or other statuses, including but not limited to, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability status, social class or socioeconomic status (SES), religion, geographic residence, national origin, immigration status, limited English proficiency, physical characteristics, or health conditions."1 Researchers have hypothes

A survey of child psychiatry outpatients. 1. Clinical and demographic characteristics.

This paper describes clinical and demographic characteristics of 664 children who attended outpatient child psychiatry clinics in Perth, Western Australia, over a one-year period. All social classes were represented; parents were the most common source of referral and typically the child had been assessed or treated for emotional or behavioural problems by other agencies previously. Referrals from the juvenile justice system were uncommon. The accessibility of clinics to the child population was found to have a significant effect on the rate of referral. Only 10% of the sample received conduct

[Poverty and mental disability in the criminal law: The invisibles].

In recent decades neuroscience research show the negative consequences of poverty in cognitive development. Environmental factors, such as material deprivation, exposure to stressful situations, violence, nutritional deprivation, environmental toxins may shape the developing brain. The changes of the structure and function of the brain since prenatal stages and their consequences can remain stable throughout the life cycle except early interventions are made. Research investigating have found significant link between child poverty and function and structural brain focusing on prefrontal cortex

Psychopathy in the context of adversity: Understanding associations of early-life adversity and psychopathic symptoms in a sample of justice-involved youth.

OBJECTIVE: Psychopathic symptoms have long been studied in samples of justice-involved youth. Collectively, findings suggest early-life adversities (ELAs) like abuse and maltreatment are linked with increases in symptomology. Yet these studies infrequently consider the wider definitions of ELA utilized by many researchers across fields of developmental and Health Psychology, which also include experiences of general household dysfunction. HYPOTHESES: Greater ELA exposure will be associated with increases in psychopathic symptomology, both at study outset and across time. Additionally, ELA wil

[Good coordination practices in community health. SESPAS Report 2026].

Community health is currently a key pillar of public health for reducing inequalities, improving quality of life, and ensuring responses tailored to local needs. However, depending on the context, discipline, or location, different perspectives are adopted, sometimes leading to heterogeneous practices and varied approaches that hinder intersectoral work and effective coordination in community health. This coordination involves co-designing interventions adapted to the social, cultural, and economic characteristics of each community, prioritizing prevention and equity, and incorporating a gende

Accessibility of prison healthcare for elderly inmates, a qualitative assessment.

Aging in custody and the rising population of elderly prisoners are creating compelling challenges for criminal justice, prison and public healthcare systems. Geriatric syndrome and higher prevalence of co-morbidities amongst older inmates result in heightened vulnerability in prison environments. Empirical research addressing older adults' access to medical care in detention is scarce; therefore, this study assessed access to medical care in prison from the perspective of older prisoners in Switzerland. We interviewed a sample of 35 older inmates (average age 61 years) on their experience of

Childhood internalizing behaviour: analysis and implications.

The concept of 'internalizing behaviour' reflects a child's emotional or psychological state and typically includes depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, somatic complaints and teenage suicide. Genetic and environmental causes have been largely implicated, although research continues to explore social etiological factors. Some research suggests females may be especially vulnerable to internalizing disorders, while data across ethnicities are somewhat variable. Regarding treatment, cognitive-behavioural therapies and use of pharmacological approaches (i.e. selective serotonin reuptake inhibi

Mapping the Ecological Landscape: A Systematized Review of Climate- and Nature-Related Content in Couple and Family Therapy Literature From 2009 to 2025.

Attention to climate- and nature-related issues is largely absent from systemic practice and the field of Couple and Family Therapy (CFT). The effects of climate change and the consequences of living as if humans are separate from and dominate over the natural world are compromising health and driving planetary degradation. Ecological distress (including ecological anxiety, grief, and depression) is rising alongside increasing disconnection from nature. As a result, the demand for clinicians competent in addressing these issues is growing. This review examined climate- and nature-related conte

Child torture victimization: Review of criminal statutes and medico-legal issues.

A renowned group of pediatricians and an attorney with expertise in child abuse matters proposed a medical definition of intrafamilial child torture perpetrated by a caretaker in a landmark 2014 publication in the health sciences literature. Representing one of the most widely cited publications on non-politically motivated child torture to date, this medical definition encompassing physical abuse, psychological abuse, deprivation, and neglect characterizing child torture has been broadly recognized and accepted by multidisciplinary professionals across medical, child welfare, and criminal jus

Validation of a multiplex PCR assay for the forensic identification of Indian crocodiles.

A dependable and efficient wildlife species identification system is essential for swift dispensation of the justice linking wildlife crimes. Development of molecular techniques is befitting the need of the time. The forensic laboratories often receive highly ill-treated samples for identification purposes, and thus, validation of any novel methodology is necessary for forensic usage. We validate a novel multiplex polymerase chain reaction assay, developed at this laboratory for the forensic identification of three Indian crocodiles, Crocodylus palustris, Crocodylus porosus, and Gavialis gange

Supporting Canadian youth in conflict with the law: a call to action for child health professionals.

Youth in conflict with the law are an underrecognized population, with unique and complex healthcare needs. The majority live in the community under supervision, rather than in locked facilities, yet still experience significant health challenges and service gaps. In this commentary and call-to-action, we provide paediatric healthcare providers with an overview of the Canadian Youth Criminal Justice Act and what is known about the epidemiology and health needs of Canadian youth in conflict with the law. We also share results of an environmental scan conducted at the 2025 Canadian Paediatric So

Medicinal Chemistry: A Key Driver in Achieving the Global Sustainable Development Goals.

In 2015, the United Nations officially launched the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as "the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. The 17 Goals are all interconnected, in order to leave no one behind, it is important that we achieve them all by 2030". Here, we have embedded medicinal chemistry as a key player to achieve SDGs. We firmly believe that medicinal chemistry can and must contribute to a sustainable f
