California's wildfires have intensified in frequency and severity, driven by climate change, prolonged droughts, and historical fire suppression policies. This PRISMA-guided systematic review synthesises empirical research from 2007 to 2024 on post-wildfire environmental exposures, health risks, and resilience strategies in California. Database searches (Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed) identified 47 peer-reviewed studies that met the inclusion criteria. Empirical evidence suggests that wildfire-derived smoke, characterised by increased concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), volatil

BACKGROUND: Human brucellosis (HB) is a climate-sensitive zoonotic disease whose transmission is influenced by complex interactions among climatic, environmental, livestock, and human behavioral factors. Although the Middle East is a major climate change hotspot and remains highly endemic for HB, evidence regarding climate-brucellosis relationships has not previously been systematically synthesized. This review aimed to evaluate the influence of climatic and environmental determinants on HB across the Middle East.
METHODS: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 202

BACKGROUND: The environmental prevalence of widely prescribed human pharmaceuticals that target key evolutionary conserved biomolecules present across phyla is concerning. Antidepressants, one of the most widely consumed pharmaceuticals globally, have been developed to target biomolecules modulating monoaminergic neurotransmission, thus interfering with the endogenous regulation of multiple key neurophysiological processes. Furthermore, rising prescription and consumption rates of antidepressants caused by the burgeoning incidence of depression is consistent with increasing reports of antidepr

Monitoring of rodents for Pasteurellaceae infection may be carried out by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We tested which of 17 rodent Pasteurellaceae strains were detected by three PCR primer sets. By phylogenetic analysis, 12 strains were assigned to the Rodent cluster and five strains to other clusters, namely the Somnus cluster, Pasteurella sensu stricto, Actinobacillus sensu stricto, the Mannheimia and Rossii cluster. A primer set developed to detect biotype Heyl [Pasteurella] pneumotropica produced amplicons from three strains and appeared specific for this taxon. A primer set devel

Characterizing open ocean biodiversity at basin scales remains challenging due to sparse sampling and limited opportunities to validate satellite-derived estimates of plankton community composition. Through the Citizens of the Sea initiative, we deployed standardized environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling kits on 27 sailing vessels during the 2024 Pacific Rally circumnavigating between New Zealand, Tonga, and Fiji, generating 728 surface ocean eDNA samples across 1.5 million km2. Using three complementary metabarcoding markers (bacterial 16S rRNA, eukaryotic 18S rRNA and metazoan Cytochrome Oxidase

BACKGROUND: Environmental low frequency noise (LFN < 125 Hz), ubiquitous in urban areas, is an understudied area of exposure science and an overlooked threat to population health. Environmental noise has historically been measured and regulated by A-weighted decibel (dBA) metrics, which more heavily weight frequencies between 2000 and 5000 Hz. Limited research has been conducted to measure and characterize the LFN components of urban environmental noise.
OBJECTIVES: We characterized LFN noise at two urban sites in Greater Boston, Massachusetts (USA) using dBA and full spectrum noise measureme

The Swiss Association for Environmental Research is regularly evaluating environmental research activities in Switzerland and has also tried to set priorities in this field which is important especially in a small country like Switzerland. More attention should be paid to the sectors of social and human sciences, energy, recycling and waste management, agriculture and cultivation in mountains, as well as to limits of maximum load of emissions and immissions within the field of environmental research. Dealing with immissions, one should differentiate between compounds which are already monitore

The health and disease of an individual is mediated by their genetics, a lifetime of environmental exposures, and interactions between the two. Genetic or biological sex, including chromosome composition and hormone expression, may influence both the types and frequency of environmental exposures an individual experiences, as well as the biological responses an individual has to those exposures. Gender identity, which can be associated with social behaviors such as expressions of self, may also mediate the types and frequency of exposures an individual experiences. Recent advances in exposome-

Oryzias melastigma, also called O. dancena, is becoming a very useful model for estuarine and marine ecotoxicity studies. With O. melastigma being adopted by ILSI Health and Environmental Science Institute (HESI) for embryo toxicity testing, improved knowledge of biomarker based embryonic development becomes especially important for mechanism-based toxicity evaluations. Using whole mount in situ hybridization and immunostaining techniques together with widely used molecular markers, this study describes the molecular development of marine medaka embryos, focusing on the brain, eye, heart, pect

The production of low-cost, small footprint imaging sensor would be invaluable for airborne global monitoring of pollen, which could allow for mitigation of hay fever symptoms. We demonstrate the use of a white light LED (light emitting diode) to illuminate pollen grains and capture their scattering pattern using a Raspberry Pi camera. The scattering patterns are transformed into 20× microscope magnification equivalent images using deep learning. We show the ability to produce images of pollen from plant species previously unseen by the neural network in training. Such a technique could be app

The emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases and their rapid dissemination worldwide are challenging national health systems, particularly in developing countries affected by extreme poverty and environmental degradation. The expectations that new vaccines and drugs and global surveillance would help reverse these trends have been frustrated thus far by the complexity of the epidemiological transition, despite promising prospects for the near future in biomolecular research and genetic engineering. This impasse raises crucial issues concerning conceptual frameworks supporting priority

Air pollution exposure and its health effects are a central concern of environmental epigenetic research with birth cohorts. This article explores why researchers have turned to the placenta as a research object to study the dynamic interactions between in utero exposure to air pollution and future child health. Drawing on Science and Technology Studies, particularly the bio-object concept, this article analyses the transformation of the placenta into a technologically manipulated postgenomic bio-object through scientific discourse and practice. Building on ethnographic fieldwork conducted at

Irgarol, originally aimed as antifouling biocide for marine environments, has become a contaminant of emerging concern due to its environmental persistence and widespread dissemination. The prevailing approach to assessment has centered on environmental prevalence and immediate toxicological repercussions, with insufficient attention paid to the dynamic mechanisms that dictate biological effects across ecological and human domains. We introduce a novel Exposure-Transformation-Response (ETR) framework, which advances the concept that Irgarol toxicity is a function of environmental persistence,

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are an increasing public health concern. However, the contribution of environmental reservoirs to the global epidemiology of vancomycin resistance remains unclear. This meta-analysis estimated the prevalence of Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VREfs) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) from clinical and environmental specimens worldwide. We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus up to 26 April 2025. Statistical analysis was performed using the meta and metaphor packages in R, and

Environmental impacts of medicines are increasingly recognised but rarely embedded in their pricing and reimbursement (P&R) and related assessments. This scoping review mapped how environmental aspects, including antimicrobial resistance (AMR) stewardship, are or could be considered in P&R of medicines and identified challenges for their implementation. Electronic searches from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Edilex, HeinOnline, Westlaw, Google Scholar and official agencies' websites were conducted. Eligible items covered developed country settings and described existing or proposed integratio
