We present a rare extramedullary ependymoma with diffuse spinal metastatic disease, and review the previous reports of extramedullary spinal ependymomas. Ependymomas are the most common intramedullary spinal cord tumor in adults. These tumors rarely present as extramedullary masses. We treated a 23-year-old man with a history of progressive neck, shoulder and arm pain, with sensory and motor symptoms in the C7 dermatome. MRI of the cervical spine demonstrated a ventral contrast-enhancing lesion with evidence of enhancement along the dura and spinal cord of the upper cervical spine, thoracic sp

A young child presented to the emergency department of a tertiary care hospital with on and off headache, focal seizures involving the left side of the body, weakness of left upper and lower limbs and vomiting for 2 weeks. Examination showed an alert child with grade 4/5 powers in left upper and lower limbs. Blood investigations were normal. An urgent CT of the brain showed intra-axial mass in the right frontal cerebral cortex, superolateral to the right lateral ventricle. MRI of the brain showed supratentorial extraventricular mass of 5.20 × 3.70 × 3.80 cm, in the right frontal cortex, emitti

Ependymoma is a relatively rare malignancy accounting for 2.0% of all primary central nervous system tumors in adults. Extracranial metastasis is a very uncommon complication of gliomas, especially of anaplastic ependymomas. The objective of this paper is to show that ependymomas can metastasize to soft tissue and lymph nodes as well as to share our approach to this challenge. We report a male patient with anaplastic ependymoma that recurred, metastasizing to the neck and lymph nodes. Metastatic disease was diagnosed based on clinical presentation of a palpable nodule on the right neck and dif

BACKGROUND: Ependymomas are the most common glial neoplasms in the spinal cord. However, spinal cord ependymomas presenting with regional dissemination along the neuroaxis are rare, with a yet undetermined standard of care. We retrospectively evaluated the management and outcomes of patients who were diagnosed with spinal ependymoma with regional metastases at presentation (SERMP).
METHODS: Between 2002 and 2012, 16 patients with regionally metastatic spinal ependymomas were diagnosed and treated. The patients were retrospectively divided into two groups according to tumor grading and histolo

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Ependymoma is the most frequently encountered intramedullary tumor. Total surgical resection is the therapeutic modality of choice whenever possible, but carries a significant risk of morbidity. This study was designed to define prognostic factors that affect clinical outcome after surgical resection of spinal intramedullary ependymoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records, radiological and pathological studies of all patients with intramedullary spinal ependymomas treated surgically in one institution were reviewed retrospectively. Spinal myxopapillary ependym

Glial tumors of the retina are rare. Most are syndrome associated and include pilocytic astrocytoma in neurofibromatosis type 1 and subependymal giant cell astrocytoma in tuberous sclerosis complex. Acquired, more conventional, diffuse astrocytomas are less frequent. Ependymoma is exquisitely rare. Herein, we report the clinicopathologic features of the second case of retinal ependymoma. The tumor was sporadic in occurrence and unilateral, low grade, and of cellular type. Its chronic course and large size prompted an initial pathologic diagnosis of "massive retinal gliosis." The literature reg

Extraspinal ependymomas are a rare type of glioma that may arise in the sacrococcygeal region, presenting as a pelvic mass in an infant or child. Ependymoma presenting in the newborn period has not been described previously. Herein we describe a case of a newborn boy who presented with a perianal ependymoma, which was subsequently found to have presacral extension. The major diagnostic challenge this case presented was to rule out the alternative diagnosis of sacrococcygeal teratoma or a developmental malformation/heterotopia.

We report the rare association of a meningioma and an ependymoma in a young boy. A meningioma was detected in the left cerebellopontine angle at age 8 months, and an ependymoma in the left frontal lobe 2 years later. Chromosomal analysis was normal, and his family showed no signs of phacomatosis. Both tumors were totally removed, and he recovered well after both operations.

A case of malignant ependymoma with extracranial metastases is reported. A 59-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with vomiting and ataxia. Following computed tomographic (CT) scanning indicating a ring-like enhanced mass in the cerebellum, the tumor was subtotally removed in December, 1985. Histological diagnosis was malignant ependymoma. A second operation was performed in February, 1987, due to recurrence of the tumor in the fourth ventricle. Postoperative radiation therapy at a total dose of 7780 rads was given over 2 years. Eleven months after radiation therapy was completed, he re

We present a case of a 63-year-old male patient who was admitted to our hospital due to an acute compression syndrome of the cauda equina. He had complained about a sciatica for at least one year. CT-diagnosis appeared to be negative, whereas a lumbar myelogram revealed a complete block at L2/3. Emergency surgery was performed, and an ependymoma of the filum terminale was removed into which it had bled massively. The case is compared to the literature findings. These relate ependymomas in the described region with acute onset more often to symptoms caused by subarachnoid bleeding. Mechanical a

Ependymomas are common types of tumors occurring within the brain and usually derive from the ependymal lining, especially of the ventricles. Ependymomas also occur, usually within the spinal canal, as primary intramedullary lesions or as late "drop" metastases from intracranial ependymomas. Extradural ependymomas are rare. They could occur as intraspinal or extraspinal lesions. We hereby report a case of an extradural (intraspinal) lesion with extraspinal extension, the extraspinal lesion being presacral in position, which presented with urinary and colonic symptoms. The lesions were secondar

Multiple karyotypically abnormal cell lines were observed in long-term cultures of an ependymoma of the fourth ventricle of a child. A previous report of a G-banded ependymoma karyotype described monosomy 8, trisomy 9, t(1;7)(p12;p13), and t(X;10)(q22-23;q24). This case also shows involvement of Xq22 and 10q24.

Thirty patients with intracranial ependymoma were treated in our clinic from 1965 through 1984. They were 13 children and 17 adults. As for the location of tumor, 9 were in the lateral ventricle, 8 in the cerebral hemisphere, 12 in the fourth ventricle and one in the third ventricle. Histologically, 18 were benign and 12 were anaplastic. The clinical course was analyzed in 24 cases. Out of the 24 cases, surgical treatment with postoperative radiation therapy was done in 16 cases, surgical treatment with postoperative radiochemotherapy in 6, and radiochemotherapy alone in two. Five-year surviva

Although the luminal surface of the ependymal cells of the human ventricular system is characterized by the presence of cilia with a typical 9 + 2 arrangement of microtubules, cilia are usually described as sparse or absent in ependymal cells of ependymomas. The incidence of aberrant cilia and structurally abnormal cilia in normal ependymal cells and ependymomal cells has not been documented. This report describes detailed ultrastructural and quantitative studies of cilia of the ependymal cells of a fourth ventricular ependymoma in a 5-year-old boy. Of a total of 267 cilia studied, 50% were lo

Ependymomas arise from ependymal cells lining the ventricles and central canal of the spinal cord and can occur throughout the whole neuraxis. The lesion rarely occurs in extracranial or extraspinal regions, particularly in the uterine broad ligament. Thus, for the pathogenesis of nonsacral extra-central nervous system (CNS) ependymomas remains elusive. Here, we describe a rare case of primary uterine broad ligament. ependymoma with cell-cycle-checkpoint kinase 2 (CHEK2) p.H371Y germline mutation. A 45-year-old woman presented with a uterine mass. Supratentorial ependymomas are aggressive childhood brain cancers that retain features of neurodevelopmental cell types1 and segregate into molecularly and clinically distinct subgroups2,3, suggesting different developmental roots. The developmental signatures, as well as microenvironmental factors, underlying aberrant cellular transformation and behaviour across each supratentorial ependymoma subgroup are unclear. Here we integrated single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, as well as in vitro and in vivo live-cell imaging, to define supratentorial ependymoma cell states, spatial organization

Ependymoma is the third most common brain tumour of childhood and historically has posed a major challenge to both pediatric and adult neuro-oncologists. Ependymoma can occur anywhere in the central nervous system throughout the entire age spectrum. Treatment options have been limited to surgery and radiation, and outcomes have been widely disparate across studies. Indeed, these disparate outcomes have rendered it extraordinarily difficult to compare studies and to truly understand which patients are low and high-risk. Over the past two decades there have been tremendous advances in our unders
