Recurrent glomerulonephritis after renal transplantation: an unsolved problem.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite advances in prevention of acute rejection and improved short- and long-term kidney graft survival, recurrent glomerulonephritis remains problematic and poorly characterized. This study analyzed prevalence and outcome of recurrent glomerulonephritis from various registries. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: Definition, classification, and limitations in evaluating epidemiology of native and recurrent glomerulonephritis are discussed. Epidemiology of native glomerulonephritis as the cause of end-stage renal failure and subsequent recurrence of ind

The prevalence of familial Mediterranean fever in the Turkish province of Denizli: a field study with a zero patient design.

OBJECTIVE: This study had two aims: (1) to investigate the prevalence of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and Behçet's disease (BD) in school students in Denizli, a province in western Turkey; and (2) to determine whether the previously suggested "zero patient design" was reliable for use in a prevalence survey. METHODS: The field survey was performed in two stages. In the first stage 7,389 students (3,847 females and 3,542 males) were asked to fill out a questionnaire in the classroom. In the questionnaire, filtering questions for FMF (the presence of recurrent attacks of fever accompanyin

Violence and adverse pregnancy outcomes: a review of the literature and directions for future research.

INTRODUCTION: Violence during pregnancy has been estimated to affect between 0.9% and 20.1% of pregnant women in the United States. This article presents a review of the research on the potential association between violence during pregnancy and adverse outcomes, explores mechanisms by which violence might influence pregnancy outcomes, and suggests directions for future research aimed at the development of successful interventions. METHODS: A review of the literature pertaining to violence during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes, trauma, and stress during pregnancy was completed. RES

Diethylstilbestrol and clear cell vaginal carcinoma. Reappraisal of the epidemiologic evidence.

The association between DES and the development of clear cell vaginal carcinoma may have several alternative explanations rather than a cause- and-effect relation. One important possibility is that susceptibility bias, arising from reasons for use of the drug in a problem pregnancy, is a prime source of the observed effect in the case-control studies. Rather than being a cause of clear cell vaginal carcinoma, exposure to DES would serve as a prognostic "marker" to identify women born of problem pregnancies that increased their risk for development of the disease. Since medical advances in pren

A review of the epidemiologic studies of toxic shock syndrome.

In response to case reports of toxic shock syndrome, six case-comparison studies were done in 1980. Early cases were predominantly in menstruating women, and the use of tampons was strongly associated with the onset of illness. Because of the widespread publication of this finding, the case-comparison studies had problems due to differential ascertainment and recall bias. However, the number of cases among women was so great and the relation with tampon use so marked that unreasonable assumptions are necessary if the results are to be attributed to these biases. The studies show the power of e

Making a difference: the construction of ethnicity in HIV and STI epidemiological research by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment.

Biomedical and public health researchers and practitioners routinely record and comment on ethnicity: however, the use of this category is often vague and without explicit statement on what ethnicity is or how it correlates to health disparities. Presented here is an inquiry into the case of ethnicity in HIV/STI research in the Netherlands. This paper considers the construction and operationalization of the concept ethnicity in HIV/STI epidemiological research in the Netherlands. The concept ethnicity is followed as it is defined, measured, categorized, communicated and constructed in the annu

Effects of gender of subjects and experimenter on susceptibility to motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that females are more susceptible to motion sickness than males, but these reports have failed to take into account the possible effects of the gender of the experimenter and the subjective nature of reports of symptoms of motion sickness. To deal with the first possible confound, we used male and female experimenters. To deal with the second issue, we recorded gastric myoelectric activity so as to be able to quantify gastric tachyarrhythmia, an objective measure that has been shown previously to correlate highly with severity of symptoms. METHOD: There were 3

Homelessness among female veterans: a systematic review of the literature.

The authors conducted a systematic, critical review of the literature to assess and summarize existing research on homelessness among female veterans. They searched seven electronic databases (ERIC, Proquest Dissertations and Theses, PsycINFO, PubMed, Social Services Abstracts, Social Science Citation Index, and Sociological Abstracts), websites of several government and research organizations, and reference lists of prior studies. They abstracted data on study design, funding source, and topic from studies meeting inclusion criteria and classified each study into one of the following categori

Prospective cohort study of gastrointestinal complications and vascular diseases in patients taking aspirin: rationale and design of the MAGIC Study.

OBJECTIVE: Although aspirin has been widely prescribed for the prevention of cardiovascular events, its risk of gastrointestinal complications is of great concern. Despite expectations for such, few data are available on the prevalence or incidence of gastrointestinal complications in aspirin users in Japan. The Management of Aspirin-induced GastroIntestinal Complications (MAGIC) is the first attempt at collaboration among cardiologists, neurologists, and gastroenterologists to obtain such findings. We aim to share all about the MAGIC study. METHODS: The MAGIC is a prospective cohort study in

Health, wealth, and air pollution: advancing theory and methods.

The effects of both ambient air pollution and socioeconomic position (SEP) on health are well documented. A limited number of recent studies suggest that SEP may itself play a role in the epidemiology of disease and death associated with exposure to air pollution. Together with evidence that poor and working-class communities are often more exposed to air pollution, these studies have stimulated discussion among scientists, policy makers, and the public about the differential distribution of the health impacts from air pollution. Science and public policy would benefit from additional research

The NutriAct Family Study: a web-based prospective study on the epidemiological, psychological and sociological basis of food choice.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on food choice have been focussing on the individual level but familial aspects may also play an important role. This paper reports of a novel study that will focus on the familial aspects of the formation of food choice among men and women aged 50-70 years by recruiting spouses and siblings (NutriAct Family Study; NFS). METHODS: Data is collected prospectively via repeatedly applied web-based questionnaires over the next years. The recruitment for the NFS started in October 2016. Participants are recruited based on an index person who is actively participating in the

Traumatic brain injury in the United States: an epidemiologic overview.

A basic description of severity and frequency is needed for planning healthcare delivery for any disease process. In the case of traumatic brain injury, severity is typically categorized into mild, moderate, and severe with information from a combination of clinical observation and self-report methodologies. Recent US civilian epidemiological findings measuring the frequency of mortality and morbidity of traumatic brain injury are presented, including demographic and etiological breakdowns of the data. Falls, motor vehicle accidents, and being struck by objects are the major etiologies of trau

Can men provide accurate confounder data about their partners for Time-to-Pregnancy studies?

PURPOSE: In studies of time to pregnancy (TTP), women's health-related behaviors may confound other determinants of TTP. In many occupation-based TTP studies, all information is collected through the male partner. There are no data on the validity of the man's report of his partner's fertility-related behavior. METHODS: We studied 202 men and their partners from the most recent pregnancy. Validity of men's reporting on their partner's use of oral contraceptives (OCs) as the last birth control method and her smoking around the beginning of TTP and agreement of coital frequency were assessed.

Personal use of hair dyes and the risk of bladder cancer: results of a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the methodology of observational studies that explored an association between personal use of hair dye products and the risk of bladder cancer. METHODS: Data were pooled from epidemiological studies using a general variance-based meta-analytic method that employed confidence intervals. The outcome of interest was a summary relative risk (RRs) reflecting the risk of bladder cancer development associated with use of hair dye products vs. non-use. Sensitivity analyses were performed to explain any observed statistical heterogeneity and to explore the influence of s
