The men behind the eponym: Frederick Parkes Weber and Henry a. Christian: Weber-Christian disease.

Frederick Parkes Weber described relapsing nonsuppurative panniculitis in 1925. In 1928, Henry Asbury Christian added the word "febrile" (relapsing febrile nodular nonsuppurative panniculitis), whereas Brill first coined the eponym "Weber-Christian disease" in 1936. This article traces the lives of Parkes Weber and Henry Christian and summarizes their original publications. It addresses only briefly the controversy as to whether Weber-Christian disease does or does not exist.

One holy man, one eponym, three distinct diseases. St. Anthony's fire revisited.

The use of eponyms adds a valuable historical context to the art of medicine, and shall hence be encouraged, nevertheless their use must always reflect an appropriate historical and medical terminology. A bizarre narration concerns the widespread term "St. Anthony's fire", which has been used for denoting not less than three distinct diseases. In this article we underscore that at least three distinct diseases, one toxic (i.e., ergotism) and two infectious (i.e., erysipelas and herpes zoster) have been called, in different times and countries, with the same eponym term of "St. Anthony's fire",

[Technical information: The 'so called' Camille Bernard lower lip reconstruction: An eponymous confusion clarified].

The use of eponyms honours those who have contributed to the development of medicine and facilitates communication between colleagues. Eponyms are based on historical knowledge to know who was the first to use a given technique. In the previous century, two different operative procedures have been attached to the 'so called' Bernard lower lip reconstruction. This historical literature on lip reconstruction with a focus on the years 1853-1855 elucidates the roles of Bernard, Saeman, Desgranges and Burow, and gives suggestions for eponyms that do justice to the innovating surgeons Bernard, Burow

West & West syndrome--a historical sketch about the eponymous doctor, his work and his family.

The British surgeon William James West has not left a tremendous literary or scientific work as many of his contemporaries did. For this reason only a little has been known about him and the fate of his family for decades, even though the eponym was created in the 1960s. Only in 1990 was a first biography published and later on supplemented. If his son had not suffered from the syndrome, which later on was named after him, he would not have published the first description of the West syndrome in The Lancet in 1841. Possibly we would be talking about Newnham's syndrome, because 8 years later he

Should a war criminal be rewarded with eponymous distinction?: the double life of hans reiter (1881-1969).

The combination of arthritis, urethritis, conjunctivitis, often associated with a psoriasiform rash has been termed Reiter's syndrome, particularly if the patient is HLA-B27 positive. In this report, the history of "Reiter's syndrome" is investigated by reviewing descriptions of the syndrome and the life and times of Hans Reiter from source materials and recent publications that shed new light on medicine and clinical research in the Nazi regime. The description of the syndrome clearly antedates Reiter's work by several hundred years. Numerous other investigators accurately described a reactiv

Arnold Kirkpatrick Henry (1886-1962) and his eponym (Master Knot of Henry): a narrative review.

PURPOSE: The aims of this review were to form a more precise description for Master Knot of Henry (MKH), and to modify classifications related to interconnections between flexor hallucis longus (FHL) and flexor digitorum longus (FDL) for showing all configurations in the literature. METHODS: A literature search was performed in main databases to obtain information related to anatomical definitions and variations of MKH. The search was carried out using the following keywords: "Master Knot of Henry", "Chiasma plantare", "Flexor hallucis longus" and "Flexor digitorum longus". Information extrac

Eponyms that honor Jewish dermatologists: A celebration and a remembrance, Part two: Jewish physicians who practiced between 1933 and 1945.

This is the second installment of a three-part contribution that highlights the achievements of Jewish dermatologists as reflected by eponyms that honor their names. It covers the period 1933-1945 when the Nazis took over Germany and how the lives of 14 notable Jewish physicians, mostly in Germany, were impacted during the Holocaust. Many of them fled from the persecution, bringing their academic talents to other lands such as the United States. At least one committed suicide (Fritz Juliusberg), and three others perished in the Holocaust (Abraham Buschke, Lucja Frey-Gottesman, and Karl Herxhei

Pott's puffy tumor with intracranial extension in a child with incontinentia pigmenti: case based review of the eponymous disease.

BACKGROUND: Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is an uncommon infection involving the frontal bone, first described by Sir Percival Pott more than 250 years ago. It can present with intracranial extension and serious neurological morbidity. Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare inherited genodermatosis that is lethal prenatally in males and manifests clinically in females. IP is associated with recurrent infections and immune dysfunction/suppression. METHODS: We report a case of Pott's puffy tumor presenting in a child with IP. We also performed a literature review of reported cases of PPT associated w

Edgar von Gierke (1877-1945) - Eponym of "von Gierke disease" and double victim of National Socialism.

As recent studies on the Third Reich have shown, a two-digit number of Jewish pathologists fell victim to National Socialist repression. One of them was Edgar von Gierke. His name is nowadays best known in medicine for discovering the "von Gierke disease" - also classified as "Glycogen storage disease type I" - which he first described in 1929. This article deals with the role of von Gierke as a persecuted and disenfranchised Jew. Accordingly, the focus is on von Gierke's repressive experiences in the Third Reich, which were quite different from other cases. It is based on (1) previously partl

Scarpa's fascia and clinical signs: the role of the membranous superficial fascia in the eponymous clinical signs of retroperitoneal catastrophe.

INTRODUCTION: The membranous superficial fascia (MSF) was described early in the 19th century, as was its role in the clinical sign of urethral disruption. Clinical signs of haemorrhage or leakage of pancreatic and biliary fluid into the retroperitoneum, which were described throughout the 20th century, all relied on circumscribed discolouration of the skin of the torso. The objective of this study was to relate the anatomy of the MSF to clinical signs of retroperitoneal catastrophe. METHODS: The MSF was dissected in the torso of seven embalmed cadavers to note its extent and its attachments.

The man behind the eponyms: Richard L Sutton: periadenitis mucosa necrotica recurrens (Sutton's ulcer) and leukoderma acquisitum centrifugum-Sutton's (halo) nevus.

Richard L. Sutton described what he termed "periadenitis mucosa necrotica recurrens," now known as major aphthosis or Sutton's ulcer in 1911. He described "leukoderma acquisitum centrifugum" (halo nevus, Sutton's nevus) in 1916. Here, we summarize the 2 publications by Sutton, trace his life story, and comment briefly on these 2 diseases.

Edoxaban enfolded beta-1,4-poly-d-glucosamine nanoparticles for targeting eponym Stuart-Prower factor for treatment of venous thrombosis.

The present research looked for ways to develop shielded nanoparticles (NPs)-drug transporters made of chitosan (CS) to enhance the bioavailability of edoxaban tosylate monohydrate (ETM) for oral administration by examining the correlation among design aspects and data from experiments using response surface methodology (RSM). ETM-loaded CS nanoparticles (ETM-CS-NPs) were developed using the ionic gelation of CS with tripolyphosphate (TPP). Utilising Zeta-sizer and scanning electron microscopy, the ETM-CS-NPs were evaluated for particle size (PS), zeta potential (ZP), surface morphology, polyd

Preexcitation Syndromes.

The classic electrocardiogram in Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is characterized by a short PR interval and prolonged QRS duration in the presence of sinus rhythm with initial slurring. The clinical syndrome associated with above electrocardiogram finding and the history of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia is referred to as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Various eponyms describing accessory or anomalous conduction pathways in addition to the normal pathway are collectively referred to as preexcitation syndromes. The latter form and associated eponyms are frequently used in litera

Ecchymosis is a large area of discoloration caused by extravasation of blood into the subcutaneous tissue. It is an objective physical finding that may provide valuable clues as to its possible etiology. Ecchymosis is associated with eponyms based on the physician who first described the physical findings, which can be divided into 4 anatomical categories: base of the skull, abdominal wall and retroperitoneum, groin and scrotum, and lower extremity. Classic external signs and eponyms associated with ecchymosis are reviewed. Knowledge of these signs on physical examination may prove to be a use
