Genome-Wide Divergence in the West-African Malaria Vector Anopheles melas.

Anopheles melas is a member of the recently diverged An. gambiae species complex, a model for speciation studies, and is a locally important malaria vector along the West-African coast where it breeds in brackish water. A recent population genetic study of An. melas revealed species-level genetic differentiation between three population clusters. An. melas West extends from The Gambia to the village of Tiko, Cameroon. The other mainland cluster, An. melas South, extends from the southern Cameroonian village of Ipono to Angola. Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea An. melas populations are genetical

Guinea pig ciliary muscle development.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for quantifying guinea pig ciliary muscle volume (CMV) and to determine its relationship to age and ocular biometric measurements. METHODS: Six albino guinea pigs' eyes were collected at each of five ages (n = 30 eyes). Retinoscopy and photography were used to document refractive error, eye size, and eye shape. Serial sections through the excised eyes were made and then labeled with an α-smooth muscle actin antibody. The ciliary muscle was then visualized with an Olympus BX51 microscope, reconstructed with Stereo Investigator (MBF Bio

When a transfusion in an emergency service is not really urgent: hyperhaemolysis syndrome in a child with sickle cell disease.

A 13-month-old boy with sickle cell disease (SCD) from Equatorial Guinea, who had recently arrived in Spain, presented with fever. He had suffered from malaria and had received a blood transfusion. Following physical examination and complementary tests, intravenous antibiotics and a red blood cell (RBC) transfusion were administered. Soon after a second transfusion 5 days later, the haemoglobin level fell below pretransfusion levels, together with reticulocytopenia, and haematuria-the so-called hyperhaemolysis syndrome-requiring intensive care and treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins and

Aggressive multifocal Buruli ulcer with associated osteomyelitis in an HIV-positive patient.

Mycobacterium ulcerans infection causes a skin disease known as Buruli ulcer (BU), a disorder manifested usually as a solitary and painless nodule or papule that progresses to massive necrotizing destruction and cutaneous ulceration. When healing occurs, it often results in disabling deformities. Buruli ulcer is considered the third most common mycobacterial disease in immunocompetent people, after tuberculosis and leprosy. Although the emergence of Buruli ulcer in Western African countries over the past decade has been dramatic, it has been scarcely reported in industrialized countries. We re

Cholera in Cameroon, 2000-2012: Spatial and Temporal Analysis at the Operational (Health District) and Sub Climate Levels.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent cholera outbreaks have been reported in Cameroon since 1971. However, case fatality ratios remain high, and we do not have an optimal understanding of the epidemiology of the disease, due in part to the diversity of Cameroon's climate subzones and a lack of comprehensive data at the health district level. METHODS/FINDINGS: A unique health district level dataset of reported cholera case numbers and related deaths from 2000-2012, obtained from the Ministry of Public Health of Cameroon and World Health Organization (WHO) country office, served as the basis for the analysi

Marburg virus reaches Rwanda: how close are we to a vaccine solution?

Marburg virus disease (MVD) is a highly virulent and often fatal disease caused by the Marburg virus, a member of the Filoviridae family, closely related to the Ebola virus. Historically, outbreaks have been sporadic but lethal across various African countries, with high case fatality rates (CFRs). In 2023, significant outbreaks occurred in Tanzania and Equatorial Guinea, with CFRs of 62.5% and 75%, respectively. In 2024, Rwanda faced its first outbreak, starting on September 27, 2024. By November 8, 2024, Rwanda had conducted 7,408 tests, confirming 66 cases, 15 of which were fatal, and 51 re

An outbreak of Plasmodium vivax malaria among heroin users in Spain.

We report the first outbreak of induced malaria among heroin users in Spain, and the first one caused by Plasmodium vivax in Europe. Five drug addicts from Madrid, who had never travelled to endemic areas, were admitted to hospital with fever and splenomegaly. Four had P. vivax malaria with low parasitaemia, ranging from 1 to 3% red blood cells. The fifth case was considered a "seropositive contact" because he had fever and positive malaria indirect fluorescent antibody test but negative blood smear. The source of infection was a young drug addict, who had often travelled to Equatorial Guinea.

Primary Dwarfism, Microcephaly, and Chorioretinopathy due to a PLK4 Mutation in Two Siblings.

INTRODUCTION: Primary autosomal recessive microcephalies (MCPHs) are characterized by primary dwarfism with MCPH and may present delayed psychomotor development and visual impairment. Biallelic loss of function variants in the PLK4 gene, which encodes the polo-like kinase 4 protein involved in centriole biogenesis, has been recently identified in several patients with MCPH and various ethnic backgrounds. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we describe 2 siblings of different sex from Equatorial Guinea harboring a homozygous frameshift mutation in PLK4 (c.1299_1303del, p.Phe433Leufs*6). A Seckel syndrome

Prevalences of Loa loa microfilaraemia throughout the area endemic for the infection.

Several cases of encephalopathy recorded in Cameroon since 1991 were in patients with very high, coincident, Loa loa microfilaraemias who had been treated with ivermectin for onchocerciasis. There was thus an urgent need to identify those areas where loiasis is hyperendemic, and where specific monitoring procedures should be developed if large-scale ivermectin treatment of onchocerciasis is to be implemented. In the present review, the available data on Loa endemicity are detailed and maps showing the prevalence of Loa microfilaraemia throughout the area endemic for the infection are presented

[Detection of Genetic Mutations Associated with Drug Resistance in Imported Plasmodium falciparum].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mutation of genes associated with drug resistance (Pfcrt, Pfmdr1, Pfdhfr and K13) in imported Plasmodium falciparum in Shandong Province. METHODS: Blood was collected from 94 falciparum malaria cases who returned from Africa in 2014. Genomic DNA for P. falciparum was extracted from the blood samples and nested PCR was performed using primers specifically designed for Pfcrt, Pfmdr1, Pfdhfr and K13. The PCR products were sequenced. Gene mutations were analyzed by sequence alignment. RESULTS: The 94 imported cases were from 18 African countries. Nested PCR was succ

Protective correlates against HIVs may have evolved in human populations in the areas of historic occurrence of primate-to-man transmissions of SIVs ancestral to HIVs: studies in these populations may provide crucial insights for treatment and prevention of HIV infection.

Recent findings suggest that Human Immunodeficiency Viruses, HIV-1 and 2, might have been transmitted to humans from particular primate species. It is thought that some Simian Immunodeficiency Viruses (SIVs), from which HIVs presumably originated, existed in their primate hosts for ages. Behavioral characteristics increasing the probability of contact between these primates and humans (such as keeping monkeys for pets, hunting monkeys for food, improper handling of the monkey meat, etc.) documented in some African countries could have facilitated cross-species transmissions (CSTs) of HIVs. Reemergence of Marburgvirus disease: Update on current control and prevention measures and review of the literature.

In 1967, the very first case of the Marburgvirus disease (MVD) was detected in Germany and Serbia sequentially. Since then, MVD has been considered one of the most serious and deadly infectious diseases in the world with a case-fatality rate between 23% and 90% and a substantial number of recorded deaths. Marburgvirus belongs to the family of Filoviridae (filoviruses), which causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF). Some major risk factors for human infections are close contact with African fruit bats, MVD-infected non-human primates, and MVD-infected individuals. Currently, there is no vac

[The change in immunohistochemical localization of basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) around the lens capsule after extracapsular extraction].

It has been reported that basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) accelerates proliferation of mesenchymal cells and epithelial cells of cornea and crystalline lens in vitro. The immunohistochemical localization of b-FGF on guinea pig lens capsule after extracapsular extraction (ECE) of the lens was studied in order to investigate the role of b-FGF on posterior capsular opacification after ECE and neovascularization. On the 12th postoperative day, immunohistochemical staining of b-FGF was recognized along the posterior capsule on the cortical side, but not along the anterior capsule. On non-ope

Fake anti-malarials: start with the facts.

This meeting report presents the key findings and discussion points of a 1-day meeting entitled 'Fake anti-malarials: start with the facts' held on 28th May 2015, in Geneva, Switzerland, to disseminate the findings of the artemisinin combination therapy consortium's drug quality programme. The teams purchased over 10,000 samples, using representative sampling approaches, from six malaria endemic countries: Equatorial Guinea (Bioko Island), Cambodia, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tanzania. Laboratory analyses of these samples showed that falsified anti-malarials (<8 %) were found in just two of th

[Hemoglobinopathies and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in the sub-Saharan immigrant population of the Center and South Maresme region, Catalonia, Spain].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Prevalence of hemoglobinophaty S and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency are very increased in certain zones of Western Africa due to the positive pressure exerted by malaria on these congenital defects. In Maresme, a region of East Catalonia, there is a numerous community of African people, coming from areas of Western Africa where sickle cell trait and G6PD deficiency are frequent. The aim of our study was to know the prevalence of both disturbances in this population. POPULATION AND METHOD: We studied 204 individuals of black ethnical background wh
