Malaria remains a significant global health issue, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Although Egypt attained malaria-free status in 2024, countries like Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Yemen are still considered "High Burden High Impact" zones. Malaria causes over 435,000 fatalities annually and places billions more at risk. Unfortunately, treatment resistance, atypical symptomology, analytical sensitivity, and the specificity of conventional detection methods have made diagnosis challenging. To mitigate the large reservoir of malaria para

BACKGROUND: Neuroschistosomiasis is a severe complication of an infection with Schistosoma; this infection can lead to myelitis transversa. Acute myelitis transversa is a rare disorder of the spinal cord, which can present with muscular weakness, sensory disturbance and intestinal or bladder dysfunction.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 17-year-old refugee from Eritrea, who had been in the Netherlands for 3 weeks, suffered from back pain and progressive weakness of both legs for one week. Both the clinical presentation and the MRI images were consistent with myelitis transversa. Schistosomamansoni eggs we

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis is a zoonotic infection caused by tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus. Geographic provenance is often used to guide species attribution, but may be misleading in patients who have migrated into endemic areas.
CASE PRESENTATION: A cystic hepatic lesion was discovered in a migrant from Eritrea, residing in Germany for 8 years. Imaging studies (Ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET-CT) demonstrated a polycystic structure in the right lobe. Serology was positive for Echinococcus (without species differentiation). Based on the patient's origin and imaging morphology, cystic echinococ

BACKGROUND: Louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) is a neglected disease that has been restricted to East Africa for many decades. Several cases in refugees from the Horn of Africa have been recently diagnosed in four European countries.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report four additional cases of LBRF in asylum seekers from Somalia and Eritrea who presented with fever shortly after arriving in Switzerland during a seven-month period. Multiple spirochetes were visualized on stained blood films which were identified as Borrelia recurrentis by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. All patients recovered after antibi

Although Malta is historically linked with the zoonosis brucellosis, there had not been a case of the disease in either the human or livestock population for several years. However, in July 2013 a case of human brucellosis was identified on the island. To determine whether this recent case originated in Malta, four isolates from this case were subjected to molecular analysis. Molecular profiles generated using multilocus sequence analysis and multilocus variable number tandem repeat for the recent human case isolates and 11 Brucella melitensis strains of known Maltese origin were compared with

The increasing migration of people from their homeland in far distant regions to Europe in the last few years has strongly influenced the rise of previously rarely seen diseases. They not only originate from the respective homeland but also from the transit countries during the migration process. We report the case of a 27-year-old male migrant from Eritrea, who after months of flight as a refugee travelling through various African countries, presented at our hospital with a progressive, painful radiculopathy. Whole spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a focus located in the myelon, e

BACKGROUND: 2-methylbutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency or short/branched chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (SBCADD) is caused by a defect in the degradation pathway of the amino acid L-isoleucine.
METHODS: We report a four-year-old mentally retarded Somali boy with autism and a history of seizures, who was found to excrete increased amounts of 2-methylbutyryl glycine in the urine. The SBCAD gene was examined with sequence analysis. His development was assessed with psychometric testing before and after a trial with low protein diet.
RESULTS: We found homozygosity for A > G changing t

A 25-year-old patient, born in Eritrea who had lived for 7 years in Nigeria before he arrived in France 1 year ago, was referred for subacute and progressive tetraparesis evolving over 2 months. Examination revealed tetraparesis, impairment of sensory function below the C6 level and tetrapyramidal syndrome. Spine MRI showed increased T2 intensity at the C6 to T11 spinal cord levels consistent with a longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis. After gadolinium administration, a diffuse, nodular, and heterogeneous pattern of contrast enhancement was seen. Cerebrospinal fluid disclosed pleocyto

Migrants with refugee backgrounds in the Netherlands face significant reproductive health challenges, including higher rates of unintended pregnancies and limited access to contraception. This study explores how post-migration realities affect the reproductive agency of refugees from Afghanistan, Somalia, Eritrea and Syria. Utilising a participatory approach, eight peer researchers from these communities conducted eight focus-group discussions and 118 in-depth interviews, involving four migrant grassroots organisations and two Dutch non-governmental organisations. The findings reveal that refu

Malaria remains a significant public health concern in Africa, with the efficacy of artemisinin-based combination therapies being threatened by the emergence of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) kelch13 mutations. The current genetic diversity of Pf and associated contributing factors reported in Africa between 2019 and 2024 were reviewed. It was shown that validated kelch13 mutations are mainly distributed in east African regions, particularly, in Eritrea (R622I, 68%) and Uganda (R561H, 52%). Emerging Pf mutations have been documented in Rwanda (C469F, 36%), Uganda (C469F, 59% and P441L, 69%), and T

Misoprostol, a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog, is currently used for medical termination of pregnancy. In the summary of the product characteristics of different market authorization holders of misoprostol tablets, approved by major regulators, serious mucocutaneous reactions, including toxic epidermal necrolysis are not documented as adverse effects. We are now reporting an unusual case of toxic epidermal necrolysis following the use of misoprostol 200 mcg tablets prescribed for termination of a pregnancy. In 1988, the World Health Assembly established the goal of eradicating poliomyelitis by the year 2000. Commitment to this goal and to the strategies that have proven effective in other regions was reaffirmed in 1995 by the African Regional Health Committee and in 1996 by heads of state attending the Organization of African Unity Summit. These strategies include 1) achieving and maintaining high vaccination coverage among children aged < 1 year with at least three doses of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) through routine vaccination services; 2) establishing effective epidemiologic and laboratory

A 70-year-old female Eritrean immigrant living in the USA presented with classic findings of genitourinary (GU) tuberculosis (TB), including risk of tuberculosis exposure based on country of origin, chronic urinary tract symptoms and persistent sterile pyuria despite antibacterial therapy. Furthermore, this patient had the hallmark radiographical findings of ureteral stricture, a dilated pelvic calyceal system, hydroureteronephrosis and bladder wall thickening, as well as a bladder wall biopsy that revealed granulomatous disease. The patient was evaluated multiple times over the course of 3 ye

There are many ethical issues involved in medical missions to developing countries. The Current Opinion/Update "Humanitarian ventures or 'fistula tourism?': the ethical perils of pelvic surgery in the developing world" raised many concerns about surgical trips to treat obstetric fistula. Despite a lack of experience with obstetric fistula, western surgeons may still bring surgical and public health techniques that may be of value to health systems in developing countries. Emphasis should be placed on program development and assessment first. This should include not only surgical training but a

Mapping an area at risk of epidemics of meningococcal meningitis in Africa has significant implications for their prevention and case treatment, through the targeted development of improved surveillance systems and control policies. Such an area was described using information obtained from published and unpublished reports of meningitis epidemics between 1980 and 1999 and cases of meningococcal disease reported by surveillance systems to WHO. The Sahel bore the greatest epidemic burden, with over two-thirds of documented outbreaks and high attack rates. In addition to those already in the Men

The desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) undergoes crowding-induced phase transformation from solitary form to gregarious form. The transformations involves changes in behaviour, colour, development, morphometry, fecundity and endocrine physiology. Recession populations of the desert locust exist primarily in the solitary phase as small populations in patchy environments and are prone to extinction because of climatic events. Significant genetic differentiation among recession populations along the Red Sea coast of Eritrea was previously reported. It was hypothesized that despite the mixing e

Anopheles stephensi is an invasive malaria vector that has been rapidly spreading within Africa since it was first identified in Djibouti in 2012. As of 2025, it has been identified in eight other countries: Ethiopia, Sudan, Somaliland, Eritrea, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Niger. We collected mosquitoes from an urban slaughterhouse in Kisumu City in western Kenya in mid-2022 for bloodmeal analyses. 19.6% (11/56) of the amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) assigned using the basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) returned matches for mosquito species, one of which was An. stephensi, from one pool

Objectives: Wild poliovirus (WPV) infection has been eliminated in Europe through mass immunization. Resettling refugees may lack immunity and importing WPV through refugees continues to cause concerns.Method: We performed a cross-sectional study to establish the prevalence of poliovirus immunity in children and adult refugees resettling in Aarhus, Denmark. Immunity was evaluated by antibody response for serotypes 1, 2, and 3.Results: The participants in this study counted a total of 475 children and adult refugees aged between 6 months and 76 years and 59% were males. The survey was conducted
