A wasp manipulates neuronal activity in the sub-esophageal ganglion to decrease the drive for walking in its cockroach prey.

BACKGROUND: The parasitoid Jewel Wasp hunts cockroaches to serve as a live food supply for its offspring. The wasp stings the cockroach in the head and delivers a cocktail of neurotoxins directly inside the prey's cerebral ganglia. Although not paralyzed, the stung cockroach becomes a living yet docile 'zombie', incapable of self-initiating spontaneous or evoked walking. We show here that such neuro-chemical manipulation can be attributed to decreased neuronal activity in a small region of the cockroach cerebral nervous system, the sub-esophageal ganglion (SEG). A decrease in descending permis

Effects of acute and chronic fluoxetine and diazepam on freezing behavior induced by electrical stimulation of dorsolateral and lateral columns of the periaqueductal gray matter.

The defensive responses induced by electrical stimulation of the dorsal periaqueductal gray matter (dPAG) of the rat have been proposed as a model of panic attacks in humans. In the present study we investigated the acute and chronic effects of fluoxetine and diazepam on freezing and escape reactions elicited by electrical stimulation of the dorsolateral (dlPAG) and lateral (lPAG) columns of the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG). The frequencies of crossing, rearing, bouts of micturition and fecal boli were also recorded. Electrodes were unilaterally implanted in the brainstem aimed at the PAG.

Effects of Hypericum perforatum and paroxetine in the mouse defense test battery.

Since (a) Hypericum perforatum shows anxiolytic-like effect in some animal models, (b) antidepressant drugs (AD) have been used as the main drug treatment for panic disorder (PD), (c) AD are also effective in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and (d) H. perforatum exhibits antidepressant activity, it was hypothesized that H. perforatum might possess an antipanic-like and/or anxiolytic-like effect. Previous studies with the mouse defense test battery (MDTB) have suggested that this model may be useful for the investigation of anxiolytic-like and antipanic-like compounds. Thus, the aim of the

The chemical defense ecology of marine unicellular plankton: constraints, mechanisms, and impacts.

The activities of unicellular microbes dominate the ecology of the marine environment, but the chemical signals that determine behavioral interactions are poorly known. In particular, chemical signals between microbial predators and prey contribute to food selection or avoidance and to defense, factors that probably affect trophic structure and such large-scale features as algal blooms. Using defense as an example, I consider physical constraints on the transmission of chemical information, and strategies and mechanisms that microbes might use to send chemical signals. Chemical signals in a lo

Further analysis of the relationship between self-injury and self-restraint.

It has been suggested that self-restraint, a phenomenon often correlated with self-injurious behavior (SIB), may be maintained by negative reinforcement in the form of escape from the aversive properties of SIB (e.g., pain). We examined the effects of blocking SIB (and presumably removing any aversive effects) on the self-restraint of a 19-year-old male with severe mental retardation. Consistent with the negative reinforcement hypothesis, blocking SIB resulted in near-zero levels of SIB and moderate reductions in self-restraint.

Behavioural effects produced in mice infected with venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus.

Pixuna, a strain of intermediate virulence of venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus, was inoculated intracranially to 24-day-old mice. Signs of encephalitis were present in 60% of the animals between 6 and 9 days with a maximum at 7 days postinoculation. The rest of the infected mice did not show clinical signs of encephalitis. In order to study the functional state of serotonergic systems a series of tests susceptible to modifications by serotonin activity were carried out. Locomotor activity was measured in an open field test. Virus-inoculated animals presented a variety of changes in th

Local responses in primary and secondary human lung cancers. II. Clinical correlations.

Local infiltrates of eosinophilic leucocytes and macrophages and the deposition of acid mucopolysaccharides (AMPS) in 72 operable primary lung cancers and 17 isolated pulmonary metastases of known origin were correlated to tumour stage (radically or non-radically operable) and clinical course, by following the patients for 2-3 1/2 years. Half of the primary lung cancers showed strong local eosinophilia which, in combination with either strong macrophage infiltration or absence of AMPS reaction, characterized a very good prognosis in radically operable patients. No eosinophils, together with a

Acute effects of lorazepam on laboratory measures of aggressive and escape responses of adult male parolees.

Acute benzodiazepine administrations typically decrease aggressive responding, but increases in aggression have been reported in some studies. The benzodiazepine lorazepam has been studied less frequently than other benzodiazepines in aggression research, although it is often used to suppress violent aggression in patients. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of acute administrations of lorazepam on aggressive responding in adult humans on a laboratory aggression task. Eight adult males participated in experimental sessions on the Point Subtraction Aggression Paradigm (PS

Attenuation of fear-like response by escitalopram treatment after electrical stimulation of the midbrain dorsolateral periaqueductal gray.

Electrical stimulation of the dorsolateral periaqueductal gray (dlPAG) has frequently been shown to induce escape and freezing/decreased locomotion responses which mimic panic- and fear-like behaviour. In the present study we tested whether such spontaneous fear-like behaviour could be observed in an open-field test 12 h after dlPAG stimulation. Further, we tested whether this fear-like behaviour could be attenuated by acute or chronic administration of buspirone and escitalopram. Our data demonstrate for the first time that animals showed fear-like behaviour 12 h after dlPAG stimulation, whic

A missing link between depression models: Forced swimming test, helplessness and passive coping in genetically heterogeneous NIH-HS rats.

The forced swimming test (FST) and helplessness reactions at two-way active escape/avoidance task are used in the study of depressive-like symptoms and antidepressant treatments in rodents. In both tests/tasks the animals are submitted to stressful situations, known to induce several responses that have been considered as parallels of some symptoms of the human depressive disorder. However, there is a lack of experimental evidence supporting associations between the behavioral responses displayed in both behavioral procedures by outbred rats. The objective of the present study was to evaluate

5-HT1A receptors of the rat dorsal raphe lateral wings and dorsomedial subnuclei differentially control anxiety- and panic-related defensive responses.

The dorsal raphe nucleus (DR), the main source of 5-HT projections to brain areas involved in anxiety regulation, is composed by 5 subnuclei that differ morphologically, functionally and neurochemically. Based on immunohistochemical evidence, it has been proposed that whereas 5-HT cells of the dorsomedial (dmDR) and caudal subnuclei are implicated in the pathophysiology of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), neurons of the lateral wings (lwDR) are associated with panic disorder (PD). We here tested this hypothesis from a behavioral perspective by investigating the consequences of the non-selec

[The behavioral characteristics of rats induced by partial degeneration of the hippocampal cholinergic neurons].

The effects of intraventricular administration of ethylcholine aziridinium ion (AF64A) were studied in male Wistar rats. Bilateral injections of AF64A (3 nm/3 mcl) reduced the reactions to biological alarm signal and produced a decrease in the open-field activity 3 weeks after this lesion. The lesioned rats also displayed deficit in retention of a passive avoidance task.

[Effect of constant darkness on relearning in a Y maze and on the temporal dynamics of forced swimming in rats of different ages].

Prolonged keeping of rats in darkness significantly activated them. This effect manifested itself in shortening of conditioned avoidance latency in the Y-maze against the background of relearning improvement in young (8-9 weeks) animals and its deterioration in mature (18-20 weeks) ones. In animals of various age groups the share of active swimming and the number of active attempts to leave the vessel increased with a decrease of the duration of immobilization in the structure of forced swimming. A significant increase of the number of immobilization short cycles (up to 6 s) on the actogram an

Fast and facile synthesis of amidine-incorporated degradable lipids for versatile mRNA delivery in vivo.

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) are widely used for mRNA delivery, with cationic lipids greatly affecting biodistribution, cellular uptake, endosomal escape and transfection efficiency. However, the laborious synthesis of cationic lipids limits the discovery of efficacious candidates and slows down scale-up manufacturing. Here we develop a one-pot, tandem multi-component reaction based on the rationally designed amine-thiol-acrylate conjugation, which enables fast (1 h) and facile room-temperature synthesis of amidine-incorporated degradable (AID) lipids. Structure-activity relationship analysis of

Typology of reactions to intimate partner violence among men and women arrested for partner violence.

This study examined behavioral and emotional responses to partner-initiated violence reported by men and women court-ordered to domestic violence counseling. Respondents provided Likert-type ratings of behavioral and emotional responses to their partners' initiated violence. Cluster analysis to determine heterogeneity of emotional and behavioral responses resulted in a three-cluster solution. The profile for Cluster 1, predominantly male, showed no specific behavioral or emotional reaction pattern. Cluster 2 respondents, evenly split between males and females, but comprising a high proportion

Viscosity dependence of the kinetic parameters of the radical ion pair in homogeneous solution determined by optically detected X- and ku-band electron spin resonance.

We investigated the dynamics of the radical ion pairs formed by photoinduced electron-transfer reaction from zinc tetraphenyl porphyrin to 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone in mixtures of 2-propanol and cyclohexanol. By the irradiation of a resonant X- (9.16 GHz) or Ku-band (17.41 GHz) microwave pulse, the time profiles of the transient absorptions was modified and the yields of escaping radical ions decreased. From these experiments, we determined the kinetic parameters of the radical ion pairs at various solvent viscosities. The recombination rates of the singlet pairs were (4 +/- 4), (8 +/- 3), a

Surface Potential Well-Gated Piezocarrier Escape for Reversible Oxygen Redox in Lithium-Oxygen Chemistry.

Piezocatalysis offers a promising way to harness intrinsic mechanical energy for accelerating sluggish oxygen redox reactions in lithium-oxygen batteries. However, its efficiency depends not just on piezoelectric polarization strength, but critically on whether stress-induced charge carriers can escape surface potential traps at terminations and reach interfacial reactive states. Here, we introduce a surface-trap-gated carrier escape mechanism via a chemically bridged Co3O4@Ti3C2Tx MXene (Co3O4@TMX) interface. Co─O─Ti coupling induces local secondary symmetry breaking in Ti3C2Tx-MXene and resh

Endocannabinoid signaling mechanisms in the substantia nigra pars reticulata modulate GABAergic nigrotectal pathways in mice threatened by urutu-cruzeiro venomous pit viper.

The substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNpr) is rich in γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic neurons and connected to the mesencephalic tectum (MT) structures, such as the superior colliculus and dorsal periaqueductal gray matter. The SNpr presents a high density of cannabinoid receptors (CBRs), suggesting a possible regulatory role that is played by endocannabinoids (eCBs) in the ventral mesencephalon. The present study investigated the involvement of SNpr eCB mechanisms in nigrotectal pathways in the expression of defensive behavior associated with instinctive fear and panic reactions in mice tha
