Congenital tracheo-esophageal fistula without esophageal atresia was diagnosed on barium swallow radiography and esophagoscopy findings in an adult patient presenting with difficult in swallowing. The fistulous opening seen on the anterior wall of the esophagus led to the trachea. On bronchoscopy, the tracheal opening was located posteriorly 5 cm below the vocal cords. Successful repair was undertaken via a left cervical approach. The anatomical and developmental basis for the preferred approach is discussed with a brief literature review on the subject.

CT scanning was performed on 36 patients with carcinoma of the esophagus or cardia. In a retrospective study, staging of esophageal malignancy, obtained by CT, was correlated with clinical data as well as endoscopic, bronchoscopic, operative, and/or autopsy findings. The results indicated that CT is a useful method for pretherapeutic staging in carcinoma of the esophagus and cardia and should be routinely performed in conjunction with conventional x-ray examination and esophagoscopy. The use of mediastinoscopy and diagnostic surgical procedures such as exploratory thoracotomy and laparotomy ca

The aim of the paper is to present own experience in diagnosis and endoscopic removal of foreign bodies from the oesophagus in dogs. The study was performed on 22 dogs of different breed and sex, aged 7 months to 17 years, with suspicion of a foreign body in the oesophagus. All the dogs were subjected to a radiography of the oesophagus and oesophagoscopy. The most commonly observed clinical signs were regurgitation and swallowing disorders. The best diagnostic method allowing detection of foreign bodies in the oesophagus was esophagoscopy.

A 39-year-old woman, who was addicted to drugs, was admitted because of referred chest pain and dysphagia after deliberate ingestion of a thermometer in a suicide attempt 6 hours earlier. Rigid esophagoscopy was unrevealing. On awakening, the patient confessed that the thermometer had been swallowed more than a month be operated on and get narcotic pain medications. Her history disclosed multiple admissions and laparotomies after suicide attempts with swallowed thermometers in the last 3 years.

On the basis of examination of 117 children with chemical burns of the oral cavity and esophagus the authors came to a conclusion that it was urgent esophagoscopy only that could most exactly diagnoze the availability and size of the esophagus burn. The complex of diagnostic and curative measures is thought by the authors to consist in abundant washing of the esophagus and stomach, struggle against shock, desintoxication by the method of forced diuresis, correction of the water-electrolyte and acid-alkaline balance, general and antibiotics therapy, early beginning of normal diet.

Missed proximal tracheoesophageal fistulas (TEF) after repair of an esophageal atresia (EA) with distal TEF are rare. The diagnosis usually is made on the basis of bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy, which can be inaccurate. Recent advances in computerized tomography (CT) have allowed saggital, coronal, and 3-dimensional reconstruction of any structure or organ. The authors report a case in which 3-dimensional CT was used to assist in the diagnosis of a missed proximal TEF in a 16-year-old girl.

Two cases of pediatric isolated cervical emphysema caused by foreign bodies are presented. This report emphasizes the need for roentgenograms, flexible nasolaryngoscopy, and situational barium swallows to identify the exact location of a tear and to determine whether the situation requires direct laryngoscopy and esophagoscopy to remove a foreign body, or an open surgical repair of a mucosal disruption. The treatment of this self-limited condition usually requires only antibiotics, fasting, intravenous fluid, and most importantly, close observation for signs of perforation.

In this report we describe a newborn with a rare case of Type II tracheal agenesis and bronchoesophageal fistula. Polyhydramnios and suspected esophageal atresia were identified during routine pre-natal ultrasound screening. Upon delivery, rigid bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, and intraoperative fluoroscopy were performed, where both bronchi and the carina showed unusual horizontal orientation making it difficult to identify the fistula. However, a post mortem CT confirmed the diagnosis of an isolated Type II tracheal agenesis with bronchoesophageal fistula.

We report a case of an extremely low birth weight premature infant born at 27 weeks of gestation, transferred to our tertiary pediatric referral center for surgical repair of an esophageal atresia. Endoscopic evaluation before the start of surgery revealed a hypopharyngeal perforation, resulting in the false impression of esophageal atresia. If no tracheoesophageal fistula is found during tracheoscopy, esophagoscopy should be done before surgical intervention as the inability to pass a nasogastric tube into the stomach is not sufficiently reliable for a correct diagnosis of esophageal atresia.

The internal organs and the bone and joint system of 970 patients with hyperparathyrosis and the bone and joint system of 146 persons with hypoparathyrosis, as well as of patients with other nosology, in whom these diabetes are suspected, underwent roentgenoscopy. It is suggested that indirect thyroid lymphography, combined with esophagoscopy, is an effective method for revealing changes in the parathyroid glands. The characteristic signs of hyperparathyrosis are subperiosteal resorption of the hand bones and specific osteoporosis of the cranial bones, particularly in their combination with sy

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric foreign body (FB) ingestion remains to be a common encounter in otorhinolaryngology and may manifest with pulmonary manifestations. Pulmonary manifestations masquerading chronic esophageal FBs in children is rare in clinical practice. This is perhaps the first documented case in Tanzania.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 6-year old boy with a 6-month history of ingesting a metallic object. The child was reported to have presented with sudden onset of drooling of saliva and difficulty in swallowing that lasted for several hours. While preparing to visit a hospital,

OBJECTIVE: To study the characteristics of diagnosis and surgical treatment of esophageal leiomyoma.
METHODS: Preoperative radiology, esophagoscopy and results of surgical treatment were retrospectively analyzed in 141 patients with esophageal leiomyoma.
RESULTS: Dysphagia (64.5%) and chest or epigastric pain (20.6%) were the most common presenting symptoms with a mean duration of 15.7 months. Eleven patients had been misdiagnosed as malignant esophageal disease, mediastinal or retroperitoneal tumor before operation. Thirteen patents received partial esophageal resection, including 2 patient

Alkaline ingestion is a potentially life-threatening problem that may confront the emergency physician. It is similar to many other toxins in that children and those who attempt suicide are its most common victims; however, implications in terms of initial stabilization and definitive care are quite distinct. Mucosal exposure to lye results in a quick, deep liquefactive necrosis. Consequently, blind nasotracheal intubation may result in the perforation of damaged tissues in the pharynx and trachea. For similar reasons, the blind passage of a nasogastric tube is contraindicated. The use of dilu

We present a case of pharyngeal perforation from a nasogastric tube mistakenly diagnosed as esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula in a full term infant female. The correct diagnosis was identified with rigid bronchoscopy and esophagoscopy immediately prior to the planned thoracotomy which was aborted. After one week of oral restriction and antibiotics, the healed perforation did not demonstrate leakage on a contrasted pharyngoesophagogram and bottle feeds were initiated. The infant was discharged to home on day of life 13 without any further complications.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is characterized by granulomatous vasculitis, renal disease, and upper and lower respiratory tract disease. Although most organ systems can be involved, gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations are notably uncommon. We describe a patient with WG whose presentation was unique for the prominence of odynophagia. Esophagoscopy revealed erosive esophagitis, which on biopsy was shown to be due to direct involvement by the underlying vasculitis. This is first antermortem documentation of esophageal disease secondary to WG. The GI manifestations of WG are reviewed.

The simultaneous admission of nine youths to our institution following their ingestion of concentrated sodium hydroxide (which had been mistaken for wine) provided us with a unique opportunity to manage corrosive esophageal injuries ranging in severity from second-degree oral mucosal injury alone to full-thickness hypopharyngeal, esophageal, and gastric injury. The severity of injury was graded first on the basis of symptoms and physical examination of the mouth, and then in the operating room by rigid esophagoscopy. This procedure provided a logical approach to management. Three patients with

Dysphagia is a common complaint encountered by otolaryngologists in the United States. Usually, patients are referred to an otolaryngologist or other physician specializing in dysphagia (deglutologist) once empiric therapies have been tried and failed. Further investigation often required the utilization of office esophagoscopy, swallowing fluoroscopy, and now high-resolution pharyngoesophageal manometry with impedance. Over the past decades, significant advances have been made in improving care of patients with dysphagia in the clinic. In this article, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions
