A healthy 5-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with an acute genital swelling. He had no relevant family history. His presentation and blood investigations were consistent with C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency, mostly likely arising de novo. A rare cause of acute genital swelling and its management are discussed.

A series of carbamate derivatives were synthesized and their carbonic anhydrase I and II isoenzymes and acetylcholinesterase enzyme (AChE) inhibitory effects were investigated. All carbamates were synthesized from the corresponding carboxylic acids via the Curtius reactions of the acids with diphenyl phosphoryl azide followed by addition of benzyl alcohol. The influence of ampicillin and chloramphenicol administered intraperitoneally singly or in combination on the protein content and the activities of hepatic esterase and amidase have been investigated in rats. The aim of the study was to evaluate concentration and activity of C1 esterase inhibitor (C1 INH) in patients with aspirin-sensitive urticaria. Deficiency of C1 INH is the basis for hereditary angioneurotic oedema. The study was performed in 32 subjects with aspirin-sensitive urticaria. The value of C1 INH in examined patients was the same as in control group. It seems there is no coexistence of aspirin-sensitive urticaria and C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency.

Esterase D phenotypes have been determined in 162 patients with psoriasis vulgaris, 181 patients with atopic diseases and 110 healthy controls. All these samples are from the area of Rheinland-Pfalz (West Germany). The two patient samples show somewhat higher frequencies of Es D 1 and lower of Es D 2-1 phenotypes as compared to controls. These differences are, however, statistically not significant. The Es D1 frequency in controls (0.9045) is in accordance with those reported from other European populations.

The presence of cholinergic nerve fibers is studied in 30 suction rectal biopsy specimens from 5 days to 7 years old children. An increase in numbers and size of cholinergic fibers in the lamina propria and muscularis mucosae and absence of submucosa ganglion cells are related to 7 Hirschsprung's diseases. In the neonates acetylcholinesterase activity may not be strong enough to stain cholinergic fibers and makes the diagnosis more difficult.
